Tissue thickness estimation for high precision head-tracking using a galvanometric laser scanner - a case study.

Marker-less optical head-tracking constitutes a comfortable alternative with no exposure to radiation for realtime monitoring in radiation therapy. Supporting information such as tissue thickness has the potential to improve spatial tracking accuracy. Here we study how accurate tissue thickness can be estimated from the near-infrared (NIR) backscatter obtained from laser scans. In a case study, optical data was recorded with a galvanometric laser scanner from three subjects. A tissue ground truth from MRI was robustly matched via customized bite blocks. We show that Gaussian Processes accurate

Profilin1 sensitizes pancreatic cancer cells to irradiation by inducing apoptosis and reducing autophagy.

Pancreatic cancer has an extremely poor prognosis mainly due to lack of effective treatment options. Radiotherapy is mostly applied to locally advanced cases, although tumor radioresistance limits the effectiveness. Profilin1, a novel tumor suppressor gene, was reported to be down-regulated in various cancers and associated with tumor progression. The objective of this study was to demonstrate how profilin1 affected pancreatic cancer radiosensitivity. We showed profilin1 was down-regulated in pancreatic cancer cells after exposure to radiation, and re-expression of profilin1 suppressed tumor c

Safety in pediatric imaging: an update.

Many assumptions are made when imaging children. In particular a judgement is made regarding how safe or unsafe each imaging modality is, using relatively arbitrary definitions and distinctions, due to the lack of robust scientific data. Here, the latest evidence is reviewed, particularly regarding the medical exposure to ionizing radiation (X-rays and CT) and MRI in childhood. The best evidence currently available suggests a small but convincing risk of cumulative low-dose ionizing radiation in children. Given our predictions for the children imaged today, it seems reasonable to pursue non-io

The interaction of UVA and UVB wavebands with particular emphasis on signalling.

The molecular response mechanisms and signalling pathways activated upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation have been extensively studied within the last two decades. Although many signalling pathways can be activated by both UVA as well as UVB, there are several distinctions indicating wavelength-specific response patterns accommodated by the terms UVA response and UVB response. Given that human skin is primarily exposed to UV light from solar radiation consisting of both UVA and UVB, we sought to explore a potential interaction between the distinct UVA and UVB responses at the level of M

Nuclear abnormalities in aspirated thyroid cells and chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes of residents near the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site.

Chromosomal studies in peripheral lymphocytes from 63 residents near the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, at ages of 52-63 years old, were performed in 2001-2002. A higher rate of chromosome aberrations was observed in the two contaminated villages, Dolon and Sarjal, compared with the control village, Kokpekti. Moreover, a relationship of frequency of cells with radiation induced chromosome aberrations and the previously estimated exposure dose was observed. Furthermore, apparent nuclear abnormalities (ANA) of thyroid follicular cells were studied in 30 out of 63 residents, who were examined f

Potential genotoxic risk related to simultaneous exposure to radionuclides and cytostatics.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the genotoxic risk to medical personnel concurrently exposed to ionizing radiation and antineoplastics, using changes in their lymphocyte cell genome as a bioindicator. The study comprised 12 female nurses employed in the nuclear medicine hospital department and an equal number of matched controls. For each examinee, both conventional structural chromosomal aberration analysis and sister chromatid exchange test (SCE) were carried out. According to Student's t-test, neither the incidence of structural chromosomal aberrations (p > 0.6) nor the mean SCE-freque

Death of a classified worker probably caused by overexposure to gamma radiation.

This paper describes the case of an industrial radiographer who was seriously overexposed to gamma radiation. The exact circumstances of this exposure were not established but it was concluded that he was repeatedly irradiated probably to a total average whole body dose of at least 10 Gy over several years. Also, a much larger dose to a hand required its partial amputation. He developed myelodysplasia, which progressed to acute myeloid leukaemia from which he died. Karyotypic examination of the leukaemic blasts showed changes very similar to those associated with secondary leukaemia that may d

Magnetic healing, quackery, and the debate about the health effects of electromagnetic fields.

Although the biological effects of low-frequency electromagnetic radiation have been studied since the time of Paracelsus, there is still no consensus on whether these effects are physiologically significant. The recent discovery of deposits of magnetite within the human brain as well as recent, highly publicized tort litigation charging adverse effects after exposure to magnetic fields has rekindled the debate. New data suggest that electromagnetic radiation generated from power lines may lead to physiologic effects with potentially dangerous results. Whether these effects are important enoug

Survival of human normal thyroid cells after X-ray irradiation.

Normal thyroid cells from 25 individuals treated surgically for malignant or benign thyroid tumour were cultured in vitro and radiation induced cytotoxicity was studied. The mean lethal dose (Do), quasi-threshold (Dq), and extrapolation number (n) of survival curves of actively dividing thyroid cells assayed by colony formation were estimated to be 92.9 +/- 2.8 cGy (rad), 58.1 +/- 6.9 cGy and 2.0 +/- 0.1, respectively (average for 25 individuals +/- standard error). These results suggest that proliferating human thyroid cells are more sensitive to X-rays than most other nonhaematologic mammali

Thyroid carcinoma.

Differentiated thyroid carcinoma was studied with regard to mode of presentation, initial findings, treatment and survival. The classic signs, symptoms, physical and scan findings were found to be present in approximately 70% of the patients. Thirty percent of the patients had either unusual presentations or findings. Prognosis was found to be dependent on age of presentation more than any other factor. The effects of neck metastasis, extracapsular invasion and recurrent laryngeal nerve involvement on long-term survival are studied in detail. patients with prior exposure to radiation were foun

Multiple Myeloma and Occupational Risk Factors: A Narrative Review.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a neoplastic hematologic disorder caused by the excessive proliferation of plasma cells and leads to bone lesions, anemia, and kidney failure. No definite etiology has been proposed for MM, but several environmental and genetic risk factors have been implicated so far. Exposure to pesticides, benzene, and organic solvents like methyl chloride have been considered a potential risk factor. Asbestos, ionizing radiation, and wood dust exposure have also been associated with MM. As MM is a relatively rare condition, the number of studies is insufficient, and in many studies

Histological characterization and quantification of late damage in mice after proton and photon irradiation.

Purpose: Radiotherapy is a widely used cancer treatment, and radiation-induced fibrosis is a frequent late effect that can significantly reduce patients' quality of life. Many approaches for evaluating and grading radiation late damage, such as fibrosis, are based on semi-quantitative methods. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological changes associated with late radiation damage in mice after exposure to proton and photon irradiation, and to evaluate the applicability of stereological methods for quantitative assessment of these changes. Emblica officinalis Gaertn. Fruits, their Phytochemicals, and Composite Herbal Products as Adjuncts in Preventing Ionizing Radiation Effects: Possible Use in Clinics.

In the management of solid tumors, ionizing radiation is a critical therapeutic modality, particularly when surgical intervention is impractical due to patient-related factors, such as compromised health or elevated mortality risk. However, its non-selective action can cause serious side effects that negate the therapeutic benefits. Efforts have thus been made to identify pharmacological agents that can selectively protect normal tissues from exposure to ionizing radiation. Seven decades of study, however, have shown that the desired success has not been achieved in obtaining an ideal radiopro

Carotid endarterectomy for postradiation carotid stenosis in patient with hypopharyngeal cancer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Radiation therapy for head and neck tumors is associated with radiation-induced carotid injury, which increases the risk of carotid artery stenosis and cerebrovascular events. Despite the well-established risks, routine screening for these complications has not been incorporated into clinical practice. This case emphasizes that, despite severe fibrosis and adhesion in the neck tissues resulting from radiation therapy, a well-structured surgical evaluation can still lead to favorable outcomes. It highlights the importance of timely surgical intervention in such cases. CASE PRESENTA

Evaluation of paediatric head CT radiation dose in Jordan: A new national diagnostic reference level survey.

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric head CT scans are essential for diagnosing various neurological conditions. However, they pose radiation risks due to children's heightened sensitivity to ionizing radiation. The absence of standardized national dose-response lines (DRLs) in Jordan contributes to considerable dose variability across hospitals. METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study evaluated 1550 pediatric head CT examinations performed between February and November 2024 in eight Jordanian hospitals. Patients were grouped into four age categories: <1, 1-5, 5-10, and 10-15 years. Radiation dose

Ionizing radiation-mediated dendritic cell maturation exacerbates inflammatory response of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and impairs osteogenesis in radiation-induced jaw injury.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced jaw injury is one of the most severe complications after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, which can disrupt patients' health and quality of life. Although the direct target of inflammation and suppressed bone regeneration activity by ionizing radiation (IR) has been phenomenally observed, the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets remain blurred. Osteoimmunology emphasizes that dendritic cells (DCs) may contribute to bone diseases. METHODS: In this study, we assessed phenotypic and functional alterations of DCs in a radiation-induced jaw in
