Insights into the epigenetics of chronic rhinosinusitis with and without nasal polyps: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Epigenetics facilitates insights on the impact of host environment on the genesis of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) through modulations of host gene expression and activity. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation cause reversible but heritable changes in gene expression over generations of progeny, without altering the DNA base-pair sequences. These studies offer a critical understanding of the environment-induced changes that result in host predisposition to disease and may help in developing novel biomarkers and therapeutics. The goal of this systematic review is to summariz

Decreasing neutralization antibody levels following vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 in the elderly: an observational study in Southern Moravia, Czech Republic.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the immune response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is essential to control the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent studies indicate that vaccine-induced humoral immunity may not be long-lasting and is weaker in the elderly. METHODOLOGY AND SAMPLE: At the turn of June and July 2021, 653 seniors (426 women and 197 men with a mean age of 74 years) were tested once for antibodies against SARS-Cov-2 in the South Moravian Region between 9 and 161 days after the second dose of vaccine (558 Pfizer -BioNTech, 28 Moderna, 36 AstraZeneca, 1 Johnson & Johnson). Samples of the whole capill

Psychedelic Communitas: Intersubjective Experience During Psychedelic Group Sessions Predicts Enduring Changes in Psychological Wellbeing and Social Connectedness.

Background: Recent years have seen a resurgence of research on the potential of psychedelic substances to treat addictive and mood disorders. Historically and contemporarily, psychedelic studies have emphasized the importance of contextual elements ('set and setting') in modulating acute drug effects, and ultimately, influencing long-term outcomes. Nevertheless, current small-scale clinical and laboratory studies have tended to bypass a ubiquitous contextual feature of naturalistic psychedelic use: its social dimension. This study introduces and psychometrically validates an adapted Communitas

Adverse effects of obesity on cognitive functions in individuals at ultra high risk for bipolar disorder: Results from the global mood and brain science initiative.

BACKGROUND: The burden of illness associated with bipolar disorder (BD) warrants early pre-emption/prevention. Prediction models limited to psychiatric phenomenology have insufficient predictive power. Herein, we aimed to evaluate whether the presence of overweight/obesity is associated with greater cognitive decline in individuals at high risk (HR) or ultra high risk (UHR) for BD. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis to investigate the moderational role of body mass index (BMI) on measures of cognitive function. Subjects between the ages of 8 and 28 years with a positive family his

Constraint and loneliness in agoraphobia: an empirical investigation.

While progress in the aetiopathology and treatment of panic disorder is indisputable, research regarding agoraphobia lacks behind. One significant-yet untested- theory by Guidano and Liotti, suggests the existence of inner representations of fear of "constraint" and fear of "loneliness" as two major schemata, important in the pathogenesis and manifestation of agoraphobia. Activation of these schemata may occur in situations in which the patient: (a) feels as in an inescapable trap (constraint) or (b) alone, unprotected and helpless (loneliness). Upon activation, the "constraint" schema elicits

Citric acid reduces the decline in P300 amplitude induced by acute alcohol consumption in healthy adults.

Event-related potential (ERP) is a reliable neuroelectric measure of brain activity that helps to confirm the assessment of mental status and cognitive impairment. Many studies have reported that alcoholics show a significantly lower ERP P300 amplitude than the norm. In the present study, ERP P300 waves were measured to evaluate the effect of citric acid on cognitive function during excessive alcohol consumption in healthy adults. Five volunteers were selected through clinical interview, physical examination, and psychiatric assessment for participation in this study. In a double-blind placebo

A neuropsychological assessment of frontal cognitive functions in Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is associated with a characteristic behavioural phenotype whose main features are, alongside compulsive hyperphagia, deficits in social behaviour: social withdrawal, temper tantrums, perseverative speech and behaviour, mental rigidity, stereotyped behaviour, impulsiveness, etc. Similar symptoms may also be found in autistic spectrum disorders and lesional pathologies of the frontal lobe. In both cases, such symptoms have been related to dysfunctions in frontal cognitive processes such as attention, working memory and executive functions. This study uses

Prevalence of asthma symptoms among adults aged 20-44 years in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Reported prevalence rates of asthma vary within and between countries around the world. These differences suggest environmental factors in addition to genetic factors in the cause of the disease and may provide clues for preventive strategies. We examined the variability of asthma-related symptoms and medication use among adults in 6 sites across Canada (Vancouver, Winnipeg, Hamilton, Montreal, Halifax and Prince Edward Island) and compared our findings with those from sites that had participated in a recent European survey. METHODS: We used the same sampling strategy and standard

Studying the heterogeneity of gestational diabetes mellitus: cardio-metabolic alteration and treatment response in a multi-ethnic population in Singapore (GDM-CARE): a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a transient hyperglycemic condition identified during pregnancy in women without a history of chronic diabetes. GDM prevalence varies in different populations and is high among pregnant women of Asia-Pacific islanders compared with others like Europeans. GDM mothers could be categorized into different glycemic intolerance phenotypes involving various combinations of insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance, that could lead to different short-term and long-term maternal and offspring outcomes, independent of known risk factors of GDM. We hy

Co-segregation of the c.489+3A>G variant with p.Cys1400Ter pathogenic CFTR mutation in Cyprus: prevalence and clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: The high variety of mutations found in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Regulator (CFTR) gene is responsible for the clinical heterogeneity observed in people with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and the atypical manifestations in CFTR-related disorders (CFTR-RD). The intronic c.489+3A>G (c.621+3A>G) variant has been reported to have questionable pathogenicity, although its alleged severity was probably due to its co-segregation in cis with another undetected mutation, as previously reported from countries in the Mediterranean region. In the island of Cyprus, several rare CFTR variants have

miRNA Expression: I/R Cardiomyocyte and Sevoflurane.

BACKGROUND: The effects of anesthetic drugs on myocardial cells have been a subject of research for the last 50 years. The clinical benefits of halogenated agents, particularly sevoflurane, have been demonstrated in cardiac surgery patients. These benefits are due to the action of different enzymes and a variety of molecular pathways mediated by the action of small noncoding RNAs (sRNA) such as microRNAs (miRNAs). However, the modulation potential induced by anesthetic drugs on the miRNA expression and their cardioprotective effects is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the variation in the expre

Feature attention graph neural network for estimating brain age and identifying important neural connections in mouse models of genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains one of the most extensively researched neurodegenerative disorders due to its widespread prevalence and complex risk factors. Age is a crucial risk factor for AD, which can be estimated by the disparity between physiological age and estimated brain age. To model AD risk more effectively, integrating biological, genetic, and cognitive markers is essential. Here, we utilized mouse models expressing the major APOE human alleles and human nitric oxide synthase 2 to replicate genetic risk for AD and a humanized innate immune response. We estimated brain age employin

Does Nordic Walking technique influence the ground reaction forces?

BACKGROUND: Nordic Walking (NW) practice has increased during the last decade, generating great benefits related to the reduction of ground reaction forces (GRF). However, there is still limited evidence regarding how the NW technique could affect GRF. RESEARCH QUESTION: To analyze the effect of the speed and the differences in ground reaction forces (GRF) between NW with Diagonal technique (DT) versus Alpha technique (AT) and compare them with normal walking (W) METHODS: 29 male physically active sport science students were randomly assigned to one of the training groups: AT (n = 15) or DT (

The fecal carriage rate of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing or carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales among Japanese infants in the community at the 4-month health examination in a rural city.

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E) is a great public health concern globally not only in hospitals but also in the community. To our knowledge, there have been few studies on the prevalence of ESBL-E and much less about carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) among children in the community, and there is no such study in Japan despite such situations. This study aimed to clarify their carriage status among Japanese infants in the community by taking the opportunity of the 4-month health checkup. METHODS: This prospective analysis was conducted fr

A Retrospective Pilot Study of Imagery Rehearsal Therapy Enhanced with Narrative Therapy Principles for the Treatment of Nightmares in US Military Veterans.

Introduction  Chronic nightmares are a common and disabling feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for which broadly effective treatments are still lacking. While imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) demonstrates benefits for patients with idiopathic nightmares and some patients with PTSD-related nightmares, research indicates it may be less beneficial for veterans. Narrative therapy (NT) is a form of psychotherapy which is client-centered and value-focused and has demonstrated benefits for PTSD patients. The application of NT principles to IRT may provide a valuable therapeutic approach f
