We present a case of congenital complete atrioventricular block in a preterm microcephalic male with multiple additional congenital anomalies, including spinal and rib abnormalities. The heart was structurally normal, and maternal tests for autoimmune disorders were negative. The brain had an immature lissencephalic appearance, suggestive of an insult early in gestation. Genetic testing was normal, virtually excluding chromosomal disorders that are known to cause lissencephaly. Viral studies were suggestive of cytomegalovirus infection during early gestation, and we believe that the patient's

Blunt chest traumas are common nowadays due to development of motor transport. They are associated with high mortality rates because of serious injuries of internal organs. The mechanisms of injuries are complex and may cause damages ranging from small ones, such as bruises or abrasions, to life-threatening trauma. Among typical injuries there are rib fractures, sternal fractures, pneumothorax, hemothorax, diaphragm lacerations, pulmonary contusions, cardiac tamponade, cardiac rupture and many others. The authors of the article would like to emphasize the pathophysiology and diagnostic difficu

Jejunal perforation is extremely rare in trauma especially without initial involvement of the abdomen. We present the case of a delayed jejunal perforation after thoracic trauma with no initial indication of abdominal trauma in a 55-year-old man who was admitted to our department after a road traffic accident. The patient sustained thoracic trauma with rib fractures of the left hemithorax and hemopneumothorax and a mild head injury. On the fourth day of his in-hospital stay, he complained of severe abdominal pain and signs of acute abdomen were observed. He underwent emergency laparotomy where

Segmentation of the primary tumor mass in neuroblastoma could aid radiologists by facilitating reproducible and objective quantification of the tumor's tissue composition and size. However, due to the heterogeneous nature of the tissue components of the neuroblastic tumor, ranging from low-attenuation necrosis to high-attenuation calcification, some of which possess strong similarities with adjacent nontumoral tissues in computed tomographic (CT) images, segmentation of the tumor is a difficult problem. In this context, landmarking methods are proposed to assist in the segmentation of neurobla

We present a case of bronchial disruption after blunt chest trauma, which is unusual because the pneumomediastinum on the chest radiograph was detected 7 days after the injury. The first day imaging methods of the thorax showed only the fractures of the first and third left rib without any complications. A computed tomography (CT) scan was done following control chest radiograph and it revealed a rupture of the left main bronchus with pleural effusion, subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum. This case shows that a finding of pneumomediastinum after blunt chest trauma should always merit

Thoracic trauma is relatively frequent in children and causes considerable mortality. This is mainly due to the multiorganic nature of the trauma. The lung is more often affected even in the absence of rib fractures because of the considerable pliability of the chest wall that allows direct transfer of energy to this organ. Injuries to the heart, the aorta, the esophagus, and the diaphragm are rare. Lung contusion and laceration cause parenchymal hemorrhage and consolidation sometimes accompanied by pneumothorax and/or hemothorax. Tracheobronchial disruption is rare but life-threatening. Most

During the dissection of an 80-year-old, white, male cadaver, a large scalenus minimus muscle was detected on the right side. Scalenus minimus muscle, a fiber bundle which strengthens the suprapleural membrane, arises from the anterior tubercle of the transverse process of the 7th cervical vertebra, and inserts to the inner border of the first rib and cupula pleura. In the present case, the scalenus minimus muscle on the suprapleural membrane was large on the right side. Its origin was on the anterior tubercle of the transverse process of the 7th cervical vertebra, and the muscle was located b

We report a case of thoracic disc herniation in a 53-year-old woman who presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with a 2-week history of acute lower back numbness and intermittent fecal incontinence. On examination, she had lower extremity hyperreflexia, an abnormal gait, and lower lumbar pain but lacked any radicular findings. A magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed a large focal paracentral herniated disc at the T2-3 level. The patient underwent successful T2-3 anterior discectomy with T2-3 rib autograft fusion. Nine months after surgery her weakness and gait had improved, but she cont

MicroRNAs (miRNA) are short RNA molecules regulating the expression of specific mRNAs. We investigated the expression pattern and potential targets of mouse miR-140 and found that miR-140 is specifically expressed in cartilage tissues of mouse embryos during both long and flat bone development. MiR-140 expression was detected in the limbs of E11.5 embryos in the primorida of future bones both in the fore and hindlimb and across autopod, zeugopod and stylopod. All digits of E14.5 fore- and hindlimbs showed accumulation of miR-140, except the first digit of the hindlimb. MiR-140 expression was a

Cancer pain most commonly occurs in patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease. Certain characteristics of cancer-related pain, including its multifocal nature, severity, heterogeneity, progressive nature, and other special challenges, distinguish it from most other types of chronic pain. Bone metastases are the most common cause of pain in patients with malignant disease, in part due to the high frequency of axial (vertebrae, rib, and pelvis) and appendicular (femoral and humeral) fractures. Relief begins with a thorough understanding of the extent of the disease and the risks of as

The objective of this study was to estimate the unit costs of non-vertebral osteoporotic fractures in five European countries based on the results of the SOTI and TROPOS clinical trials in postmenopausal osteoporotic women. The information recorded in the Case Report Forms was used. The perspective of third party payers was adopted. Hip fracture unit cost was the highest. The ranges of costs among countries was narrow for hip from 8,346 euros (Italy) to 9,907euros (France), but wider for other fractures: 890 euros (Spain) to 2,022 euros (Italy) for wrist, 1,167euros (Spain) to 3,268 euros (Ita

We report a case of delayed bronchial stenosis after blunt chest trauma with right aortic arch. A 21-year-old male passenger was involved in a traffic accident. He was brought to an emergency hospital with severe chest pain and dyspnea, and diagnosed with multiple rib fractures, right hemopneumothorax and chylothorax. He was treated with chest tube drainage and the symptoms subsided. About 9 weeks later, he complained of exertional dyspnea and was referred to our hospital. Bronchoscopy demonstrated circumferential stenosis of the right main bronchus approximately 1 cm distal to the carina. Tho

A six-year-old, female Tibetan terrier was referred for investigation of a non-healing wound on the left caudal thorax. A subcutaneous swelling had initially developed on the chest wall, followed by a draining tract from which seropurulent fluid drained for two months. There had been no response to antibiotic treatment. Following radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations, a bone sequestrum from a fractured rib or a foreign body was suspected. Surgical exploration of the wound identified a sinus tract and a wooden foreign body (an ice-lolly stick) was located in subcutaneous tissues. Parti

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a congenital nongenetic anomaly characterized by unilateral chest wall hypoplasia, ipsilateral hand abnormalities, and hemivertebrae. It has not ben described so far in the fetus.
CASE: The patient was referred for suspected left-arm hypomelia at 22 weeks of gestation. On ultrasonography, we confirmed the presence of severe left-sided hypomelia and detected an asymmetry of the rib cage and 3 thoracic hemivertebrae. The absence of heart defects led us to make the putative diagnosis of Poland syndrome. After termination of pregnancy, the diagnosis was confirmed by

Subclavian vein catheterization is associated with failure and complications because of injury to the nearby lung and subclavian artery. Its position, sandwiched between the clavicle and the first rib, makes sonographic imaging difficult. The medially pointed sonography probe makes it difficult to align the needle as well as image the entire needle. The axillary vein lies outside of the thoracic cage and can be easily imaged in its longitudinal view along with the entire needle, guidewire, dilator, and catheter in real-time. All described techniques of venous access using sonography have used

Short trunk dwarfism with multiple vertebral segmentation defects (MVSD) represents a heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by the presence of multiple vertebral and rib abnormalities. A two and one-half year-old female with the spondylothoracic dysostosisform of MVSD is presented. In addition to skeletal anomalies, a lumbar hemangioma, bilateral foot deformities, distal leg atrophy and weakness, and areflexia at the ankles were present. An underlying neuropathic process was suspected. Results of urodynamic studies were suggestive of a neurogenic bladder. Magnetic resonance imaging of

Distraction osteogenesis has recently become a mainstay for treatment of craniofacial syndromes with mandibular hypoplasia. This article presents the difficult case of a patient with a previous costochondral rib graft who underwent mandibular distraction and developed a fibrous pseudoarthrosis at the distraction site. This was attributed in part to an associated temporomandibular joint ankylosis. Resorption of the pseudoarthrosis occurred once the distractor was removed. It appears that distraction osteogenesis of a mandible with an ankylosed temporomandibular joint can result in healing with

Osteomalacia (OM) is a condition that usually is overlooked and neglected when compared with other metabolic bone disease such as osteoporosis. Presenting with a wide spectrum of nonspecific clinical, radiographic, and biochemical manifestations, OM is a treatable metabolic disease that is precisely diagnosed by anterior iliac crest bone biopsy. Clinical clues to lead one to suspect OM in the context of a diffuse bone disease include the presence of generalized bone pain affecting mainly shoulders, hips and rib cage, proximal muscle weakness, low serum calcium x phosphorus product, increased s

A 49-year-old patient presented with cranioencephalic injuries including subdural hematoma and severe mass effect, facial and thoracic injuries with bilateral rib fractures but no parenchymatous lesions or extrapulmonary air. After surgical evacuation of the subdural hematoma, the patient entered the intensive care unit. Twenty-four hours later the patient pulled out the tubes, which were reinserted after signs of respiratory failure appeared. A series of clinical and radiological signs then followed, namely subcutaneous cervicothoracic emphysema, mediastinitis accompanied by hyperinsufflated
