Primary cardiac liposarcoma is exceedingly rare and its metastatic potential varies based on the actual tumor subclass. Intestinal intussusception is also an uncommon cause of abdominal pain and bowel obstruction in adults and it usually generates at a malignant lead point in this age group. We report a case of a primary cardiac dedifferentiated liposarcoma in a pregnant woman causing small bowel seeding leading to bowel intussusception.

The isolation of Cryptococcosis agents from environmental samples may be difficult due to the presence of groups of fast-growing fungi. We propose a new culture medium based on a modification of Dichloran Rose-Bengal Chloramphenicol Medium (DRBCm) to detect colonies of Cryptococcus neoformans. Our results indicate that DRBCm is superior to the classical Bird Seed Agar in its ability to detect colonies of C. neoformans.

We present a case of an incisional thymoma biopsy causing dissemination of thymocytes to a regional lymph node. Lymphatic seeding from circulating tumor cells is a distinct mechanism of tumor spread. We review the literature relevant to operative trauma as a cause of tumor cell migration to nearby lymph nodes. Summarized are case reports wherein metastasis of benign tumors has been related to operative trauma.

Corpus cavernosum abscesses are uncommon with only 23 prior reports in the literature. Several precipitating factors for cavernosal infections have been described including injection therapy for erectile dysfunction, trauma, and priapism. Common causal organisms include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococci, and Bacteroides. We report a unique case of a corpus cavernosum abscess due to proctitis with hematological seeding and review the literature on cavernosal abscesses.

Leptomeningeal dissemination of primary CNS tumors varies widely by histologic subtype. In certain tumors including medulloblastoma, ependymoma, germ cell tumors, and primary CNS lymphoma, seeding of the cerebrospinal fluid space is a critical factor in determining stage, prognosis and appropriate therapy. Other tumor types, such as glioma, may have radiographic evidence of leptomeningeal metastases without clear impact on prognosis or therapy.

We prospectively evaluated 53 patients with prosthetic joints and 27 patients with other orthopedic prosthetic devices who developed Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB). After exclusion of patients with primary postoperative infections, the risk of a prosthesis becoming infected by means of hematogenous seeding after SAB was 34% (15 of 44 patients) for prosthetic joints and 7% (1 of 15 patients) for other orthopedic prostheses.

Psyllium is a hydrophilic agent found in many bulk laxative preparations. We report the occurrence of an anaphylactic reaction in a patient after ingestion of a psyllium-containing laxative. IgE mediation of the reaction was suggested by a positive immediate skin test to psyllium, positive passive transfer skin test, lack of skin response during passive transfer with heat treated serum, and an elevated IgE (RAST) to psyllium seed.

The authors present a case of primary carcinoma of the choroid plexus in a 26-years-old female, localized in the left lateral ventricle. Four years after total removal plus local radiotherapy, the patient presented with an intraparenchymatous metastasis in the right cerebellar hemisphere and intraspinal metastatic seeding. With this kind of malignant growth, a therapeutic approach consisting of radical removal of the tumour plus radiotherapy to the whole neuraxis is proposed.

This study identified itaconic acid (IA), through comparative metabolomic analysis (the study of small molecules in biological systems), as a key virulence-related metabolite produced by the fungus Trichoderma citrinoviride Snef1910. Phenolic acids are important secondary metabolites in wheat, existing in free, conjugated, and bound forms. Traditional extraction methods use organic solvents like ethanol and acetone and are labor-intensive procedures. This study examined the extraction of phenolic acids from wheat using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) with water as the green extractant. The extraction of phenolic acids was performed on whole grain flour and on wheat kernels. MAE conditions were solvent type (water vs. 80% (v/v) ethanol), temperature (140, 160, 170, and 180°C), and extraction time (2, 5, 10, and 15 min).
