"All of Me Is Completely Different": Experiences and Consequences Among Victims of Technology-Assisted Child Sexual Abuse.

The aim of the present study was to gain a first-person perspective on the experiences of technology-assisted child sexual abuse (TA-CSA), and a deeper understanding of the way it may affect its victims. Seven young women (aged 17-24) with experience of TA-CSA before the age of 18 participated in individual in-depth interviews. The interviews were teller-focused with the aim of capturing the interviewee's own story about how they made sense of their experiences over time, and what impact the victimization had on them in the short and long terms. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed a b

(Un)doing gender in a rehabilitation context: a narrative analysis of gender and self in stories of chronic muscle pain.

PURPOSE: To explore how gender appears in the stories of self-told by men and women undergoing rehabilitation for chronic muscle pain. METHOD: The material, which consists of qualitative interviews with 10 men and 6 women with chronic neck pain, was analyzed from a gender sensitive perspective using narrative method. The analysis was inspired by Arthur Frank's typologies of illness narratives (restitution, chaos and quest). FINDINGS: The women's stories displayed selves that were actively trying to transcend their former identity and life conditions, in which their pain was embedded. Their s

[Experience of pregnancy and delivery after ART].

Differences in the experience of pregnancy and birth after ART compared to spontaneous conception are of interest for the developmental pyschologist. Studies performed to date have compared mainly the psychological aspects of experiencing the singleton pregnancy and the single birth. Couples after ART are at higher anxiety levels compared to those who have conceived naturally in the early stages of pregnancy. Individual experiences with infertility in those affected have often led to states of anxiety, low self-esteem and low confidence, but this does not seem to persist in pregnancy. Higher a

'Culture' in culture-bound syndromes: the case of anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa is presently considered a Western culture-bound syndrome. A cultural focus on dieting and ideals of thinness for women are assumed to be implicated in the disorder. While research indicates that the majority of non-anorectic women in the United States are preoccupied with body weight and dieting, it is not clear what 'thinness' means to anorectics themselves or that norms about dieting are always involved in subjective experiences of anorexia. Meaning-centered studies of anorectics--especially those in non-clinical settings--are needed to clarify the cultural contexts of the d

A psychometric study of the Flourishing Scale for people living with dementia.

INTRODUCTION: There are few validated strengths-based outcome measures for evaluations of psychosocial interventions in dementia and measurement of the concept of flourishing has not been directly explored. This study therefore examined the psychometric properties of the Flourishing Scale (FS)-an eight-item generic self-report measure of social-psychological well-being-and how it might be adapted for people with dementia. METHOD: A secondary data analysis of baseline data from the Journeying Through Dementia study, a randomized controlled trial of a self-management intervention for older adul

The Age of Questions: Truth Regimes and Subjectivity in the Era of Large Language Models.

This essay explores how digital technologies shape subjectivity's infra-political constitution, focusing on large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT or Gemini within what philosophers, inspired by Michel Foucault, term the "digital truth regime." After defining this regime, the essay identifies five key traits of LLMs: presentism in truth experience, the distancing of social mediation, a probabilistic approach to truth, a redefinition of self-expression, and a new conception of truth-production. While the first three extend the digital truth regime of the 2000s, the last two mark a shift in n

Stolen Femininity of Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: A Review.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a common endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age worldwide and is increasingly recognized in Oman. Hormonal imbalances, particularly elevated androgen levels, underline many of its manifestations, leading to excessive male-pattern hair growth, acne, and oily skin. These visible manifestations can significantly affect self-esteem and body image. Furthermore, these hormonal imbalances disrupt the menstrual cycle, causing irregular or absent periods, and making natural conception difficult. As such, polycystic ovary syndrome deeply influences a woman's perc

The trade-offs of co-ruminating with friends: A profile analysis.

Adolescents' co-ruminating with friends has been tied to trade-offs: having higher quality friendships but experiencing more depressive symptoms. To determine if individual youth experience these trade-offs, we applied a person-centered approach to Swedish adolescents' self-reports of co-rumination with friends, depressive symptoms, and friend support (n = 2767, aged 12-16, 52% girls; 88% Swedish). We found four latent profiles: Two high in co-rumination and two low. One high co-rumination profile exhibited the proposed trade-offs; the other reported high friendship support and fewer depressiv

'I don't live in my body somehow': metaphorical talk in women's accounts of vaginismus and dyspareunia.

Vaginismus and dyspareunia are common sexual difficulties; they often take a long time to be appropriately diagnosed, and their origins remain unclear. This paper examines the metaphors used by women to describe bodily experiences associated with vaginismus and dyspareunia, and highlights the contribution this form of analysis can make to the study of sexuality and sexual difficulties. A secondary analysis was conducted on primary data from biographic interviews exploring women's experiences of sexual pain and difficulties with sexual intercourse. Metaphor analysis was used to analyse a data s

Development and Evaluation of the Lifestyle History Questionnaire (LHQ) for People Entering Treatment for Substance Addictions.

OBJECTIVE: We developed and investigated the psychometric properties of the Lifestyle History Questionnaire (LHQ), a self-report instrument designed to measure the extent of occupational dysfunction attributable to substance abuse. METHOD: The instrument was developed using concepts in the ecological models of occupational therapy and in the work of William L. White, who defined addiction culture in terms of the patterns of life in context. We analyzed data from two field tests using both classical test theory and item response theory. RESULTS: The final version of the instrument has 70 item

New aspects in photodynamic therapy of actinic keratoses.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) or its methyl ester (MAL) is a very effective method to treat actinic keratosis (AK). New developments will contribute to optimization of this treatment modality. This will partly be based on a better understanding of the nature of AKs. Since pain during treatment is a frequent side effect of PDT, new methods of alleviating pain are of high interest, especially when large areas are treated. A better understanding of the underlying mechanism of specific protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) accumulation can lead to further increase the response

On phenomenology and classification of hoarding: a review.

OBJECTIVE: Hoarding is a behavioural abnormity characterized by the excessive collection of poorly usable objects. It is described mainly in association with obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCDs) and in geriatric populations. Yet the literature on the phenomenon is heterogeneous and the notion obviously lacks a consistent definition. This review attempts to describe the psychopathological and clinical spectrum of hoarding and may contribute to clarify its classification. METHOD: Systematic review and discussion of the literature on hoarding. RESULTS: Hoarding is a complex behavioural phenome

[Regulatory T cells - a possible promising target in the treatment of autoimmune diseases].

Regulatory T-cells play a key-role in maintaining immunological tolerance to self and may have a key role in the development of new therapeutic principles. We present an overview of the current concepts of regulatory T-cells. A proportion of these cells develops during normal T-cell maturation in the thymus, while other subtypes are induced in the periphery. They have similar functional properties: they proliferate poorly, inhibit the activation of other T-cells and are protective in models of autoimmunity. The underlying mechanisms are not completely understood, probably cell-cell-contact dep

Relationship between subjective cognitive symptoms and frontal executive abilities in chronic schizophrenic outpatients.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between executive abilities and subjective basic symptoms in a group of outpatients with schizophrenia. Fifty patients underwent a neuropsychological testing battery. Basic symptoms were assessed using the Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire. Using Pearson's product-moment correlations or partial correlations calculated by regression procedure, cognitive performance was not related to subjective experience. When patients were divided into two groups, with and without 'hypofrontality', as assessed by the neuropsychological testing, we did

Virtual environments special needs and evaluative methods.

This paper presents an overview of the development of the Learning in Virtual Environments programme (LIVE), carried out in special education over the last four years. It is more precisely a project chronology, so that the reader can sense the historical development of the programme rather than giving emphasis to any one particular feature or breakthrough, which are covered in other papers and available through the authors. The project conception in a special school in Nottingham is followed by a description of the development of experiential and communicational virtual learning environments.

Impact of a Residency-Run Emergency Medicine Podcast Summary on Learning Retention and Engagement.

INTRODUCTION: Podcasts have become a widely used educational tool in emergency medicine. In this study, a podcast was used as the intervention. This podcast consisted of a brief audio summary of weekly in-person conference content produced by residents and faculty. We assessed whether a resident-led, curriculum-based podcast summary improved knowledge retention and learner engagement compared to a standard written summary format. METHODS: This mixed-methods prospective cohort study conducted at a single urban academic hospital included 54 emergency medicine residents and approximately 66 atte

Student Perceptions of a Virtual Reality Animation for Teaching Absorption and Bioavailability in Pharmacology: A Mixed Methods Evaluation.

Medication errors, often arising from insufficient pharmacology knowledge, can have serious consequences, highlighting the importance of effective pharmacology education for health care students. This study hypothesized that virtual reality (VR) could improve student engagement, motivation and perceived learning of core concepts in pharmacology. A mixed-method approach was employed. Students who had completed a course in basic pharmacology were recruited from five international study sites to view a VR animation, explaining drug absorption and bioavailability. The students responded to an onli

IDEA-FAST clinical study protocol: Identifying digital end-points of fatigue, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in N = 2000.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue, impaired sleep quality and daytime sleepiness, common in neurodegenerative and immune-mediated diseases, are debilitating and have serious societal and economic implications. Currently, measurement of these symptoms largely relies on self-reported questionnaires, which are burdensome for patients and lack sensitivity, granularity and reliability. METHODS: Building on a preceding feasibility study and qualification advice of the European Medicines Agency, the Clinical Observational Study of the European project Identifying Digital Endpoints to Assess FAtigue, Sleep and acT
