Hallucinations in the months after a trauma: An investigation of the role of cognitive processing of a physical assault in the occurrence of hallucinatory experiences.

The role that cognitive processing of a recent trauma has in the occurrence of hallucinations has not been examined longitudinally. This study investigated trauma-related cognitive predictors of hallucinations in the months following an interpersonal assault. Four weeks after treatment at an emergency department for interpersonal assault injuries, 106 participants were assessed for peri-traumatic cognitive processing, cognitive responses to trauma memories, negative beliefs about the self, Posttraumatic-stress disorder (PTSD), and hallucinatory experiences. Hallucinatory experiences were reass

Process and outcome in psychodynamic hospitalization-based treatment for patients with a personality disorder.

This study examined the relationship between the psychotherapeutic process and outcome in 44 patients who completed hospitalization-based psychodynamic treatment for personality disorders. Using self-report and interview ratings, outcome was assessed in terms of symptoms and personality functioning, and the psychotherapeutic process in terms of self and object relations, felt safety, and reflective functioning. Symptom and process measures were administered at intake, every 3 months during treatment, and at 3 and 12 months follow-up. Personality measures were collected at intake, the end of tr

Attrition and outcome in self-help treatment for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder: a constructive replication.

The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of a 12-week CBT-based pure and guided self-help among 29 patients with full and subthreshold bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. In the intention-to-treat analyses, self-help had a moderately positive and sustained effect on the patients' eating problems. The patients reduced their mean number of objective bulimic episodes and purging behavior by 26% and 22% over the course of treatment. The corresponding reduction levels for the treatment completers (n=21) were 41% and 34%, respectively. As in the previous study, there were no significa

Disturbances in identity and self-regulation in bulimia nervosa: implications for a metaphorical perspective of "body as self".

This study investigates a metaphorical account of bulimia that proposes that bulimics lack a clearly defined sense of self, and subsequently utilize their physical bodies as a means of self-definition and regulation. Three major aspects of this perspective were assessed: identity disturbance; use of the binge and purge as means of emotional regulation; and sensitivity to interpersonal contact. Differences among bulimics, binge eaters, and normal controls were explored. Bulimics reported greater amounts of identity confusion, enmeshment, and overall instability in self-concept than normal contr

Self-monitoring of blood glucose levels in diabetes. Principles and practice.

Self-monitoring of blood glucose levels has become popular due to the limitations in the use of urine testing for assessing the status of diabetes control. Furthermore, the recent emphasis on the importance of diabetes regulation entails that patients tailor the insulin doses based on blood glucose levels. This review discusses the methodology of capillary blood glucose monitoring and its application to insulin adjustments. When performed properly, self-monitoring is accurate, reliable, and effective. It can also be beneficial in detecting hypoglycemia and may have a positive psychological imp

Relationship between falls, knee osteoarthritis, and health-related quality of life: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-reported falls, doctor-diagnosed knee osteoarthritis (OA), and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We hypothesized that falls and knee OA would be associated with poor HRQoL on both disease-specific and generic measures. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the publicly available Osteoarthritis Initiative data sets. A total of 4,484 subjects aged 45-79 years at baseline were divided into three subpopulations: those who had neither a history of falling nor doctor-diagnosed knee OA; those who ha

Impact of health beliefs and risk perception on willingness to undergo osteoporosis assessment among perimenopausal and menopausal women in primary care: a descriptive cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis holds significant clinical importance as a major risk factor for fractures and the associated consequences of chronic pain, disability, loss of independence, decreased quality of life, and increased mortality. Studies have found varied levels of knowledge, risk perception and health beliefs about osteoporosis. The impact of health beliefs and risk perception on willingness to undergo osteoporosis assessment was not known. This study thus aimed to determine the factors that impact the willingness of peri-menopausal and menopausal women to undergo Bone Mineral Densitomet

Feasibility and acceptability of offering breast cancer risk assessment to general population women aged 30-39 years: a mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer incidence starts to increase exponentially when women reach 30-39 years, hence before they are eligible for breast cancer screening. The introduction of breast cancer risk assessment for this age group could lead to those at higher risk receiving benefits of earlier screening and preventive strategies. Currently, risk assessment is limited to women with a family history of breast cancer only. The Breast CANcer Risk Assessment in Younger women (BCAN-RAY) study is evaluating a comprehensive breast cancer risk assessment strategy for women aged 30-39 years incorporatin

Incidental Muscle Uptake of 177Lu-DOTATATE in Peripheral Vascular Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Even in remission, cognitive deficits are frequently observed in bipolar disorder. Because these deficits are assessed with complex and comprehensive tests, they seem to be neglected in routine daily practice; however, assessing them with short self-rated questionnaires could be beneficial. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between objective and subjective cognitive assessment in bipolar disorder. METHOD: The study included 38 patients with bipolar disorder that were in remission for at least 6 months and 19 healthy controls. The Stroop Test and Auditory Verbal Learni

Change in self-esteem after weight-loss treatment. Alexithymia as a psychological mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Self-esteem often changes during weight-loss treatment, and these fluctuations play a crucial role in shaping patients' adherence and clinical outcomes. Understanding the psychological factors that predict self-esteem trajectories during treatment-as-usual programs is therefore essential. AIM: This longitudinal study investigated whether weight change, alexithymia and its facets, psychological distress, and binge-eating disorder predicted self-esteem after a 9-month clinical weight-loss program. METHODS: A consecutive sample of 155 adults with overweight or obesity completed asse

Self-efficacy and autonomous motivation are associated with lower sugar-sweetened beverage consumption in low-income overweight and obese mothers of young children.

Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption is strongly associated with obesity. Autonomous motivation and self-efficacy, key concepts of self-determination theory, may influence SSB consumption. Low-income mothers of young children experience disproportionate rates of obesity. Whether autonomous motivation and self-efficacy are associated with SSB consumption in low-income mothers of young children is unknown. This exploratory secondary data analysis explored whether autonomous motivation or self-efficacy were associated with SBB consumption using data from a lifestyle intervention for low-inc

Implicit cognitions on self-injurious and suicidal behavior in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Performance on implicit measures of suicidality has been associated with suicidal and nonsuicidal self-injury. Despite the high prevalence of self-harm in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), no previous study has assessed implicit measures in this patient group. METHODS: Forty patients with BPD and 25 healthy controls completed three implicit association tests (IATs) (Death words - Me/Others words, Self-Harm pictures - Me/Others, and Self-Harm pictures - Good/Bad words) and a subliminal priming task (effect of the primes "dying"/"growing" on the cat

A systematic review of self-determination interventions for children and youth with disabilities.

PURPOSE: Developing self-determination skills is an important component of youth's maturation. However, many youths with disabilities lack opportunities to engage in activities that can promote these skills. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of self-determination interventions for children and youth with disabilities. METHODS: A systematic review was performed on seven international databases that identified 28 studies meeting our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Among the 28 studies, 5184 youth with disabilities (aged 9-29, mean age 16.8 years) were represented across

A key role for autoreactive B cells in the breakdown of T-cell tolerance to pyruvate dehydrogenase complex in the mouse.

The key immunological event in the pathogenesis of the autoimmune liver disease primary biliary cirrhosis is breakdown of T-cell self-tolerance to pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC). The mechanism resulting in this breakdown of tolerance remains unclear. Mice exposed to self-PDC mount no immune response; however, animals coexposed to self-PDC and PDC of foreign origin (which in isolation induces a cross-reactive antibody but not an autoreactive T-cell response) show breakdown of T-cell as well as B-cell tolerance. This observation raises the possibility that a cross-reactive antibody respons

Father involvement and self-concept among adolescents in Indonesia: the moderating role of sex.

OBJECTIVES: Father involvement consistently predicts positive developmental outcomes, yet few studies have examined its relationship with self-concept among adolescents from collectivist cultural backgrounds, and fewer still have used culturally grounded measures. This study examined the relationship between father involvement and self-concept among adolescents and investigated whether sex and age moderated this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 302 adolescents (62.9 % female; 63.6 % middle adolescents) at a state Islamic senior high school in Pekanbaru, Riau P

Self-Efficacy Measured Through the Italian Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (IT-DMSES) in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes.

Background: Obesity and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) are common comorbidities in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), often complicating disease management. Self-efficacy-the belief in one's ability to manage diabetes-has been shown to influence self-care behaviours and outcomes. This study aimed to assess diabetes management self-efficacy among adults with obesity and T2DM undergoing multidisciplinary rehabilitation, focusing on the impact of BMI, BED, and gender. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 137 adults (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) with T2DM admitted to a residential rehabilitation cent
