[Cognitive impairment after accidental high-dose corticosteroid therapy].

Synthetic glucocorticosteroids can induce various severe mental disorders. Persisting cognitive disorder represents a rare complication of corticoid therapy involving memory, concentration, attention, or occupational performance. We observed the effects of a 20-day self-induced high-dose corticosteroid treatment on the cognitive functions in a 54-year-old patient. Having excluded dementia due to other organic causes, we examined the patient neuropsychologically immediately at the end of the steroid therapy and at follow-up (1, 2, 4, and 6 months). The initial tests showed seriously impaired fu

Impact of symptom burden clusters on self-efficacy and quality of life in hemodialysis patients: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

Hemodialysis is a therapeutic procedure used to manage and treat acute and chronic kidney failure, which cannot respond to traditional medical therapy. Patients undergoing hemodialysis frequently experience multiple burdensome symptoms that impact their psychological and physical well-being. Understanding how symptom burden influences self-efficacy and quality of life is essential to improve care for this population. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of physical and mental health symptoms on self-efficacy in managing the chronic disease and quality of life among patients undergoing haemo

Self-Efficacy Mediates the Attachment-Pain Association in Couples with Provoked Vestibulodynia: A Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Attachment influences the way individuals anticipate, react, and seek support when faced with chronic pain. Although cross-sectional research indicates that attachment insecurity and pain self-efficacy are associated with pain intensity in chronic pain populations, little is known about their long-term effects on pain, and about the directionality of associations between these constructs. Furthermore, whereas attachment is a relational concept, few studies on genito-pelvic pain have espoused a couples' perspective. AIM: Using a prospective dyadic design, the present study aimed

Chronic neck pain patients with traumatic or non-traumatic onset: Differences in characteristics. A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with chronic neck pain can present with disability, low quality of life, psychological factors and clinical symptoms. It is unclear whether patients with a traumatic onset differ from those with a non-traumatic onset, by having more complex and severe symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical presentation of chronic neck pain patients with and without traumatic onset by examining cervical mobility, sensorimotor function, cervical muscle performance and pressure pain threshold in addition to the following self-reported characteristics: qua

Effects of a mouthwash containing potassium nitrate, sodium fluoride, and cetylpyridinium chloride on dentin hypersensitivity: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the efficacy of a mouthwash containing potassium nitrate (KNO3) as its main component, along with sodium fluoride (NaF) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). The primary endpoint was the relief of dentin hypersensitivity (DH) against the cold stimuli. The effects on other DH tests and periodontal inflammation were also evaluated. METHODS: We used a single-center, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized design. A total of 82 patients with DH (40 in the test group, 42 placebo controls) were analyzed using visual analog scales (VASs) for a cold test, a tactile test, a co

Responsiveness to change over time and test-retest reliability of the PROMIS and Neuro-QoL mental health measures in persons with Huntington disease (HD).

BACKGROUND: The majority of persons with Huntington disease (HD) experience mental health symptoms. Patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures are capable of capturing unobservable behaviors and feelings relating to mental health. The current study aimed to test the reliability and responsiveness to self-reported and clinician-rated change over time of Neuro-QoL and PROMIS mental health PROs over the course of a 24-month period. METHODS: At baseline, 12-months, and 24-months, 362 participants with premanifest or manifest HD completed the Neuro-QoL Depression computer adaptive test (CAT), PROMIS

Maternal screening for early postnatal vulnerability.

Research has highlighted the wide impact of maternal mental health problems during and beyond the postpartum period and the public health role of community health professionals in early detection of women who may be at risk. This paper aims to describe, explore and test an a priori hypothesised conceptual model of postnatal experience, identifying the relationships between postnatal mental vulnerability and postnatal adjustment to maternal roles and attitudes, marital/partner-relationship and sense of coherence. Three validated self-report questionnaires (WAST, MAMA, SOC) measuring the variabl

The relationship between dysphagia and frailty among Chinese hospitalized older patients: a serial mediation model through self-perceived oral health and self-reported nutritional status.

BACKGROUND: Frailty contributes to adverse outcomes in older adults and places a heavy burden on healthcare resources. Dysphagia is associated with frailty, but the mechanisms by which dysphagia affects frailty in older adults are unclear. This study aimed to investigate a serial mediating effect of self-perceived oral health and self-reported nutritional status in the relationship between dysphagia and frailty among hospitalized older patients in China. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1200 patients aged ≥ 65 years in the Department of Geriatrics, Shaanxi Provincial People's Hosp

Effectiveness of Digital Health Interventions for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), marked by dyspnea, cough, and sputum production, significantly impairs patients' quality of life and functionality. Effective management strategies, particularly those empowering patients to manage their condition, are essential to reduce this burden and health care use. Digital health interventions-such as mobile apps for symptom tracking, wearable sensors for vital sign monitoring, and web-based pulmonary rehabilitation programs-can enhance self-efficacy and promote greater patient engagement. By improving self-management skills, thes

Biochemical marker of use is a better predictor of outcomes than self-report metrics in a contingency management smoking cessation analog study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This investigation compared cotinine (primary metabolite of nicotine) at study intake to self-report metrics (e.g., Fagerstrom Test of Nicotine Dependence [FTND]) and assessed their relative ability to predict smoking outcomes. METHODS: We used data from an analog model of contingency management for cigarette smoking. Non-treatment seeking participants (N = 103) could earn money in exchange for provision of a negative carbon monoxide (CO) sample indicating smoking abstinence, but were otherwise not motivated to quit. We used intake cotinine, FTND, percent of friends

Automatic metaphor processing in adults with Asperger syndrome: a metaphor interference effect task.

This paper investigates automatic processing of novel metaphors in adults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and typically developing controls. We present an experiment combining a semantic judgment task and a recognition task. Four types of sentences were compared: Literally true high-typical sentences, literally true low-typical sentences, apt metaphors, and scrambled metaphors (literally false sentences which are not readily interpretable as metaphors). Participants were asked to make rapid decisions about the literal truth of such sentences. The results revealed that AS and control participants s

Self-esteem in carers of frail older people: resentment predicts anxiety and depression.

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety and depression are major health problems for carers of frail older people. Positive reactions to caregiving have been shown to protect people against anxiety and depression. The aims of this study are to explore specific aspects of self-esteem, termed positive caregiving reactions, and examine its relationship with caregiving anxiety and depressive symptoms. METHOD: A cross-sectional study of a cohort of carers (n = 119) of community-living people (70 years) identified empirically as frail completed postal questionnaires. Positive caregiver reactions were evaluated using t

Haemophilia home infusions with dried fresh plasma.

A group of 26 haemophilic patients was successfully managed on a home infusion programme over a one-year period. Single donor units of dried fresh plasma, the coagulant activity of which was adequate to ensure haemostasis of most of the haemorrhagic episodes treated, were used. The transmission of hepatitis was kept to a minimum by careful selection of regular, known donors and by the utilisation of single donor units of plasma in preference to plasma pools. Although the programme was costly, it was less expensive than it would have been had alternate antihaemophilic products been used. The ad

Measuring mindfulness: A systematic review and evaluation of self-report mindfulness scales.

The growing body of research on mindfulness has led to the development of a wide range of self-report instruments designed to assess the construct. However, conceptual and psychometric issues have arisen, partly as a result of inconsistent definitions and operationalizations, but also from challenges in scale development and validation. This systematic review synthesizes and evaluates the psychometric qualities of 21 self-report mindfulness scales intended for adult populations and tested in their English versions. The scales were evaluated in reference to nine psychometric quality domains, ea

An open label investigation of the feasibility and effectiveness of Memory Boost: A novel brief group cognitive remediation intervention for adults with mixed mood and anxiety disorders.

To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a novel group cognitive remediation (Memory Boost) designed to improve memory in an adult mixed mood and anxiety disorder population. A secondary aim was to explore the relationship between mood symptoms and performance on subjective and objective memory measures. Participants were adults (n = 99) being treated for a primary diagnosis of a mood disorder in an ambulatory mental health and addictions program who completed Memory Boost between 2014 and 2020. Assessments were completed pre- and post-intervention using self-report measures of mood, a
