BACKGROUND: Albinism can be a diagnostic challenge to the optometrist, with ocular albinism the entity most likely to be overlooked or misdiagnosed. Albinism should be suspect in a child with nystagmus.
METHODS: Albinism is best diagnosed by electron microscopy of skin or hair bulbs. Measuring the flash visually evoked response (VER) is the best way to confirm the abnormal decussation of the optic nerve fibers. Transillumination of the iris can be performed to see if it lacks pigment on its posterior surface. Optometrists should also be alert for nystagmus, strabismus, lack of stereopsis, and

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome associated with a paracentric inversion of chromosome 7 in a 2-year-old Japanese girl is reported. She had sparse and light-brown hair, bilateral cleft lip and palate, fused lower incisors, a pigmented skin lesion at the neck, accessory nipples, limited extension of elbow joints and bilateral ectrodactyly of hands and feet. Cytogenetic studies demonstrated a balanced inv(7)(q22.1;q36.3) in the patient and her father. The association of EEC syndrome and inv(7) in the patient suggested a putative locus of the EEC syndrome gene either at 7

Both basal cell carcinoma (bcc) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are very common in Japan, followed by Bowen's disease, actinic keratosis and Paget's disease. Bcc has a strong tendency to invade deeply, although distant metastasis is extremely rare. Differentiation from malignant melanoma is sometimes necessary in the case of pigmented bcc. As for scc, the most common predisposing factors in Japan are various kinds of scars. Recently, however, incidence of actinic keratosis-scc is has been increasing. Verrucous carcinoma is a variant with low-grade malignancy, and is considered to be induced

Administration of hematoporphyrin derivative i.v. followed by local exposure to red light has resulted in complete or partial response in 111 of 113 cutaneous or s.c. malignant lesions. Tumors treated have included carcinomas of the breast, colon, prostate, squamous cell, basal cell, and endometrium; malignant melanoma; mycosis fungoides; chondrosarcoma; and angiosarcoma. No type has been found to be unresponsive. In several cases complete clearing of chest wall metastatis has been achieved in treated areas. Deep-seated and pigmented tumors required a higher dose of drug for effective treatmen

BACKGROUND: Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is one of the most effective procedures for patients with non-aesthetic vascular lesions in addition to signs of skin photoageing, and it has been reported as very successful in the treatment of telangiectasias, spider nevi, erythrosis, and above all, rosacea and poikiloderma. Its use is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, which exploits the haemoglobin absorption peak among its range of wavelengths.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of intense pulsed light in treating non-aesthetic vascular

A 49-year-old man was first seen in our department for the evaluation of scleroderma-like skin changes and a nonhealing ulcer on his leg from years before referral. His medical history was of long duration. His growth was stunted at the age of 12. At 21 years of age, the patient noted graying of the scalp hair, most prominent on his temples, and the process was progressively completed by the age of 23. At the same age, atrophy and thinning of the skin and loss of subcutaneous fat resulted in a tense, shining, and adherent appearance of his skin, most obvious on his face and extremities. Soon a

Dermatomycosis are mycotic diseases of skin caused by a few mycetes: dermatophytes, and some opportunistic fungi as Malassezia, Candida (not C. albicans), Trichosporon, Rhodutorula, Cryptococcus or Aspergillus, Geotrichum, Alternaria, etc. Dermatophytes are a group of closely related filamentous fungi that invade keratinized tissue (skin, hair, nails) of humans and other animals and produce infection called dermatophytosis or ringworm or "tinea". The etiological agents of dermatophytosis are classified in three genera: Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton (Deuteromycetes). On the basis

Background: Skin photoaging, primarily induced by chronic ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, is characterized by dryness, wrinkle formation, pigmentation abnormalities, and reduced skin elasticity, resulting from oxidative stress, inflammation, and degradation of the extracellular matrix. Codonopsis pilosula, a traditional food-medicine homologous plant, is recognized for its anti-aging properties. However, its lipophilic components (designated as CP-L) remain insufficiently explored. Methods: Herein, we developed a thermosensitive nanogel encapsulating CP-L-loaded transferosomes (CP-L nanog

Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin disease that can be influenced by stress, including that resulting from sleep deprivation and sleep disturbances. Sleep is essential in the regulation of several hormonal, metabolic and autoimmune pathways that may have important roles in vitiligo. This study aimed to investigate the potential interplay between hormonal, metabolic, and autoimmune markers in vitiligo patients, and the possible influence of sleep quality in these vitiligo pathways. A cohort of 30 vitiligo patients and 26 healthy controls were assessed for various laboratory markers, including thyro

INTRODUCTION: Autologous skin grafting is the mainstay of treatment in burn patients. Extensive full thickness burns remains a challenge to the burns surgeon due to the lack of autologous skin donor sites. The conventional split thickness skin grafting (SSG) and the Meek micrografting (Meek) technique are part of the armamentarium of the burns surgeon to curtail the challenge of paucity of donor sites. With advances in burn care, mortality rates of burn patients have reduced. As a result, with more patients surviving acute burn, there is a paradigm shift of research towards assessment of funct

Skin cancers are among the most common cancers worldwide and are increasingly prevalent. Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is characterized by the malignant transformation of melanocytes in the epidermis. Although CM shows lower incidence than other skin cancers, it is the most aggressive and responsible for the vast majority of skin cancer-related deaths. Indeed, 75% of patients present with invasive or metastatic tumors, even after surgical excision. In CM, the photoprotective pigment melanin, which is produced by melanocytes, plays a central role in the pathology of the disease. Melanin absorbs ultra

Targeted therapies and immunotherapies are associated with a wide range of dermatologic adverse events (dAEs) resulting from common signaling pathways involved in malignant behavior and normal homeostatic functions of the epidermis and dermis. Dermatologic toxicities include damage to the skin, oral mucosa, hair, and nails. Acneiform rash is the most common dAE, observed in 25-85% of patients treated by epidermal growth factor receptor and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase inhibitors. BRAF inhibitors mostly induce secondary skin tumors, squamous cell carcinoma and keratoacanthomas, chang

OBJECTIVES: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterised by tissue fibrosis and vasculopathy with defective angiogenesis. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) plays a major role in tissue fibrosis, including downregulation of caveolin-1 (Cav-1); however, its role in defective angiogenesis is less clear. Pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF), a major antiangiogenic factor, is abundantly secreted by SSc fibroblasts. Here, we investigated the effect of TGF-β and Cav-1 on PEDF expression and the role of PEDF in the ability of SSc fibroblasts to modulate angiogenesis.
METHODS: PEDF and Cav-1 ex
