A Thirteen-Year Analysis of Facial Fractures among Professional Soccer Players.

This study aims to identify the epidemiology and effects of facial fractures on return to play (RTP) in Major League Soccer (MLS) and the English Premier League (EPL). A total of 39 MLS players and 40 EPL players who sustained facial fractures from 2007 to 2019 were identified. Data on player demographics, the injury, and the impact of their injury on RTP were collected. Elbow-to-head was the most common mechanism of injury (20.3%). The most common fracture involved the nasal bone (48.3%). Most players (90%) RTP the same season. Players who sustained nasal fractures missed significantly fewer

Craniofacial Asymmetry: A Literature Review.

Craniofacial asymmetry is a very common finding. Possible etiologies include genetic and environmental factors or a combination of both. There is no age or gender preference for the development ofcraniofacial asymmetries in general, except for the postural plagiocephaly, which has been more frequently found in male babies. Craniofacial asymmetries have been identified before birth in presumably normalfetuses. Congenital and non-congenital craniofacial asymmetries have been related to certain types ofpathology. One or more of the different structures of the cranial, dentoalveolar, and/or mandib

Craniofacial biostereometrics.

We believe that biostereometrics can be useful to the craniofacial surgeon in providing a highly accurate, reproducible diagnostic and presurgical tool that is inexpensive and noninvasive. It can help visualize complex pathologic bony abnormalities, resolve ambiguous CT scans, and predict soft-tissue changes secondary to alterations in bony contours when used in conjunction with CT scans and cephalograms.

Functional anatomy of cranial synostosis.

An understanding of how sutural growth processes relate to the totality of cranial growth is necessary to cure the cause and not just the sy … e synostosis of the human metopic suture was noted as a frequent characteristic of the cleft-palate skull. Primary morphological event associated with premature synostosis was a cranial base malformation. Cranial sutures permit passage of the neonatal head through the birth canal, permit slight relative variations between adjacent bones while keeping th …

An arachnoid cyst involving only the hypoglossal nerve: case report and review of the literature.

We describe a patient with an arachnoid cyst, possibly of traumatic origin, at the hypoglossal canal producing atrophy of the tongue. An arachnoid cyst should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any patient with a localized cystic mass around the cranial nerves at the base of the skull.

Access to anteriorly placed tumours in the posterior fossa by medullotomy.

Access to tumours lying in front of the brain stem may be restricted by the neuraxis and cranial nerves, the tentorium, and the bony configuration of the skull base. When there is distortion and attenuation of the brain stem, direct access through the medulla should be considered. A case is described.

Traumatic exophthalmos due to an uncommon arteriovenous fistula without involvement of the cavernous sinus. Case report.

A case of traumatic exophthalmos due to an arteriovenous fistula between the middle meningeal artery and the veins at the base of the skull is reported. There was no involvement of the cavernous sinus. Embolization following selective transfemoral catheterization of the external carotid artery resulted in complete relief of the symptoms.

A 2-Year Experience of Robot-Assisted Epilepsy Surgery Using a New Cranial Robotic System With Optical Tracking: Variables Influencing Accuracy and Complications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Our institution began using the Globus ExcelsiusGPS cranial robot in 2023 for placement guidance in epilepsy surg … our first 2 years of experience. Potential influencing factors analyzed included trajectory length, skull thickness, angle of trajectory with the skull, imaging used for registration, head holder, stabilization of the head, drill used, brain location, type of surgery, the number of each case performed, and the number of trajectories placed. We also anal …

Multiscale photoacoustic imaging of stroke in preclinical models and future directions toward clinical translation [Invited].

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) combines optical absorption contrast with acoustic detection, enabling noninvasive, high-resolution spatiotempor … ations for full clinical translation due to anatomical and metabolic differences from humans, while skull-induced optical scattering and acoustic aberration further degrade image quality and penetration depth, limiting the clinical applicability of PAI for stroke studies. In this review, we highlight future directions in three aspects: (1) technological …

A deep-learning model for one-shot transcranial ultrasound simulation and phase aberration correction.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial ultrasound is a promising non-invasive neuromodulation technique with applications, including neuronal activity modulation, blood-brain barrier opening, targeted drug delivery, and thermal ablation. Its ability to deliver focused ultrasound waves to precise brain regions has led to over 50 clinical trials targeting conditions such as opioid addiction, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, epilepsy, and glioblastoma. However, skull heterogeneity complicates accurate focal spot prediction and energy delivery, requiring rapid yet precise phase aberration correction in clinical w…

Injuries from falling out of bed in infants under 1 year of age: a systematic review.

CONTEXT: Falls from beds are a leading cause of unintentional injuries in infants under 1 year of age. While most cases result in mild outcomes, the potential for severe injuries, such as skull fractures or intracranial haemorrhages, exists. Despite the prevalence of these incidents, no systematic review has focused specifically on injuries from bed falls in this specific age. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk and severity of injuries caused by falls from beds in infants under 1 year of age through a systematic review. DATA SOURCES: We searched in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Lilacs Sc…
