The psychophysiological impact of childhood autism spectrum disorder on siblings.

OBJECTIVE: The negative impact of caring for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on parents' psychophysiological functioning has been widely evidenced. However, siblings, who also face emotional, social and physical challenges associated with having a brother/sister with ASD, have been less widely studied. This study examined the psychophysiological impact of childhood ASD on siblings. METHODS: A sample of 25 siblings of children with ASD (and their mothers) and a control group of 20 siblings of neuro-typical children (and their mothers) completed questionnaires assessing: (a) demogra

[Medico-social management of severe respiratory insufficiency. Role of Associations].

Roughly 50,000 patients in France with severe chronic respiratory failure are under treatment with respiratory domiciliary support. Over 28,000 of these are managed by a non-profit associative network. These patients are of varied age with 7% under the age of 30 and 45.8% over 70 years. Likewise the causes and the treatment modalities are varied. Because of the technical constraints of respiratory support these patients have difficulties of a psychological and social nature which can lead to a substantial reduction in their quality of life. The medico-social management of the patient with resp

Rib fractures in chronic alcoholic men: Relationship with feeding habits, social problems, malnutrition, bone alterations, and liver dysfunction.

Rib fractures are common in alcoholics. This high prevalence might be due to ethanol-associated malnutrition, bone disease, liver dysfunction, or the peculiar lifestyle of the alcoholic with frequent trauma and altercations. In this study we try to discern the role of these factors on rib fracture (assessed on a plain thoracic X-ray film) in 81 consecutive alcoholic patients, 25 of them cirrhotics. Serum albumin, prothrombin aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type 1 collagen, osteocalcin, in

Risk and protective factors for alcohol use among pregnant African-American, Hispanic, and white adolescents: the influence of peers, sexual partners, family members, and mentors.

Factors affecting the drinking patterns of 183 pregnant, African-American, Hispanic, and White adolescents were investigated, including the influence of peers, sexual partners, family members, and mentors. Among participants who drank alcohol prior to their pregnancies, 87% quit or cut back on their drinking behaviors. Those adolescents who lived in environments where their partners, peers, and relatives were drinking and using drugs were more likely to have consumed alcohol in the previous month, while adolescents who identified mentors and/or parents who provided high levels of support were

The perspective of homeless space in the railway stations of India: A critical understanding through inter-personal network analysis.

There is a global recognition that the homeless in different clusters are isolated social groups. They are highly susceptible to loneliness and related psycho-physical health outcomes owing to their less supportive and fragmented social networks. The conditions are worse in the case of chronic or lifetime homelessness. Beyond this popular notion, other critical perspectives are also there. This paper attempts to analyse the differences in inter-personal social networks between the chronic and the non-chronic homeless groups at a railway junction in India. The data have been collected through s

Identifying parent-sibling socialization profiles and their prospective associations with adolescents' interpersonal competence.

Family socialization plays a key role in adolescents' social development, yet little is known about how adolescents are socialized across different family subsystems beyond parental socialization. By using latent profile analysis to capture a holistic view of co-occurring family dynamics, this study aimed to identify different emotion socialization patterns in parent-adolescent and sibling subsystems and their longitudinal associations with adolescent interpersonal competence. Participants were 175 families with at least two children (target adolescent Mage = 14.09, 47.4% female). At baseline

Exploring the role of orexins in the modulation of social reward.

RATIONALE: positive social interactions are essential for mental health, by offering emotional support, reducing stress levels, and promoting resilience against drugs of abuse effects. However, not all individuals perceive social interaction as rewarding. OBJECTIVES: the goal of this study was to investigate whether the modulation of the orexin system can shift passive coping and non-social behavior (vulnerable) to active coping and social behavior (resilient). This knowledge is primordial for stress- and addiction-related disorders, and for other psychiatric disorders involving impairment in

Social oppression, psychological vulnerability, and unprotected intercourse among young Black men who have sex with men.

OBJECTIVE: Young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) are at extraordinarily high risk for HIV infection. Given their dual minority identity, they experience multiple forms of social oppression-racism, homophobia, and poverty. This study tested a model for how these forces contribute to their sexual risk behavior. METHOD: YBMSM (n = 1,289) from 2 Texas cities completed a 1-time assessment of sexual behaviors and psychosocial variables. Structural equation modeling was used to characterize relationships among variables. RESULTS: Experiences of racism, homophobia, and socioeconomic distress
