BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) comprise 1%-2% of all bone tumors. ABCs involving the upper cervical spine in pediatric patients complicate intervention because of an immature skeleton and nearby neurovascular elements. Treatment often consists of surgical intervention with preoperative embolization to mitigate blood loss. During selective arterial embolization, it is important to be aware of extracranial-intracranial anastomoses from tumor feeding vessels. We describe a C2 vertebrae ABC that had multiple tumor arteries anastomosing with bilateral vertebral arteries.

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis of cervical spine can lead to dysphagia.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 73-year-old male weighing 110 kg and diagnosed with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis in cervical spine with dysphagia. Patient manifested local pain of neck, a gradual limitation of spinal mobility. The surgery decision was based on swallowing problems, not pain in the spine. Before surgery radiographs, magnetic resonance images, computed tomography of the cervical spine and gastroscopy were obtained. Osteophytes were removed from the anterior approach with present o…

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a common cause of adult spinal cord dysfunction. Although the therapeutic options for moderate to severe CSM patients have been established well, the existing guidelines for therapeutic decisions in mild cases of CSM are unclear. We present a review of literature on conservative treatment and surgery for CSM and suggest general recommendations applicable in various clinical presentations and in different geographic locations across the globe, with due considerations to available resources and locally prevalent practices.

Fibrosing mediastinitis is an uncommon benign disorder in which a chronic inflammatory reaction results in diffuse fibrosis of the mediastinum, potentially compromising the airways, great vessels and other mediastinal structures. Herein we describe a progressive course of fibrosing mediastinitis in a 72-year-old man. Computed tomography images depicted a diffuse, infiltrative, soft tissue mass involving the esophagus and superior vena cava in the mediastinum. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed destruction of the adjacent thoracic spine. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography also re…

OBJECTIVE: Surgical site infections (SSIs) complicate 1% to 9% of elective spine surgeries. Previously identified risk factors include diabetes mellitus type 2, obesity, and chronic kidney disease. We sought to determine whether the use of postoperative surgical site drains is associated with deep SSIs.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients operated for deep SSIs after surgery for degenerative spine pathologies between July 2016 and December 2018. Patients were excluded if the reason for operation was other than deep SSI or if their primary operation was for infection or tumor. Usin…

Motion preserving surgery within the cervical spine may be performed by special implants, for example, c spine disc prosthesis or total disc replacement (cTDR), or by simple decompression of the cervical nerve roots. However, also fusion surgery may be performed with good results. Here, we summarize indications as well as contraindications for motion preserving techniques and indications for fusion surgery. cTDR is indicated in special cases of soft disc herniation, especially in younger individuals without signs of myelopathy. Posterior decompression may be used as an alternative, especially …

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how each type of sagittal cervical alignment affects the motion of the upper and subaxial cervical spine using kinematic magnetic resonance imaging.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The sagittal malalignment of the cervical spine from degeneration in the subaxial cervical spine reflects a disruption in the kinematic properties of the cervical spine and affects the motion of adjacent segments. Changes in the sagittal parameters and kinematics of the upper cervical spine and upper thoracic spine due to the kyphosis are unknown.
METHODS: Kin…
