Combined effect of cortical superficial siderosis and cerebral microbleed on short-term and long-term outcomes after intracerebral haemorrhage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cortical superficial siderosis (cSS) and cerebral microbleed (CMB) have distinct effects on intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH). We aim to investigate the combined effect of cSS and CMB on outcomes after ICH. METHODS: Based on a single-centre stroke registry database, patients with spontaneous ICH who had CT scan within 48 hours after ictus and MRI subsequently were identified. Eligible patients were divided into four groups (cSS-CMB-, cSS-CMB+, cSS+CMB-, cSS+CMB+) according to cSS and CMB on susceptibility-weighted image of MRI. Primary outcomes were haematoma volume on a

Reduced Left Atrial Rotational Flow Is Independently Associated With Embolic Brain Infarcts.

BACKGROUND: Up to 25% of embolic strokes occur in individuals without atrial fibrillation (AF) or other identifiable mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess whether left atrial (LA) blood flow characteristics are associated with embolic brain infarcts, independently of AF. METHODS: The authors recruited 134 patients: 44 with a history of ischemic stroke and 90 with no history of stroke but CHA2DS2VASc score ≥1. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) evaluated cardiac function and LA 4-dimensional flow parameters, including velocity and vorticity (a measure of rotational flow), and brain

(-)-Phenserine inhibits neuronal apoptosis following ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Stroke commonly leads to adult disability and death worldwide. Its major symptoms are spastic hemiplegia and discordant motion, consequent to neuronal cell death induced by brain vessel occlusion. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is upregulated and allied with inflammation and apoptosis after stroke. Recent studies suggest that AChE inhibition ameliorates ischemia-reperfusion injury and has neuroprotective properties. (-)-Phenserine, a reversible AChE inhibitor, has a broad range of actions independent of its AChE properties, including neuroprotective ones. However, its protective effects and detai

Neurorestorative Responses to Delayed Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Treatment of Stroke in Type 2 Diabetic Rats.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Comorbidity of diabetes mellitus and stroke results in worse functional outcome, poor long-term recovery, and extensive vascular damage. We investigated the neurorestorative effects and mechanisms of stroke treatment with human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats. METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats were induced with T2DM, subjected to 2 hours of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) and treated via tail-vein injection with (1) PBS (n=8) and (2) hMSCs (n=10; 5×106) at 3 days after MCAo. RESULTS: In T2DM rats, hMS

Echoing Plaque Activity of the Coronary and Intracranial Arteries in Patients With Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease, and both coronary and intracranial atherosclerosis are common in the elderly. Unlike coronary artery disease (CAD), intracranial atherosclerotic disease can cause intracranial atherosclerotic stroke by branch occlusive disease (B-type) and coronary-type rupture of plaque (C-type). We hypothesized that plaque characteristics of intracranial arteries are associated with those of coronary arteries. METHODS: Eighty-one patients with acute cerebral infarcts caused by intracranial atherosclerotic disease without history of CAD were anal

A Novel Cell Therapy Method for Recovering after Brain Stroke in Rats.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, stroke leads to a significant part of the adult mortality and morbidity and also it could result in some neurological deficits in the patients' lives. Cell therapy has opened a new approach to treat the brain ischemia and reduce its terrible effects on the patients' lives. There are several articles which show that the cell therapy could be beneficial for treating brain stroke. In this study, we have planned to present a new cell therapy method for stroke by administration of Mesenchymal stem cells and differentiated neural stem cells without astrocytes. METHOD AND MATER

Effects of intravenous administration of umbilical cord blood CD34(+) cells in a mouse model of neonatal stroke.

Neonatal stroke occurs in approximately 1/4000 live births and results in life-long neurological impairments: e.g., cerebral palsy. Currently, there is no evidence-based specific treatment for neonates with stroke. Several studies have reported the benefits of umbilical cord blood (UCB) cell treatment in rodent models of neonatal brain injury. However, all of the studies examined the effects of administering either the UCB mononuclear cell fraction or UCB-derived mesenchymal stem cells in neonatal rat models. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of human UCB CD34(+) cells (he

Staged carotid artery stenting and coronary artery bypass surgery versus isolated coronary artery bypass surgery in concomitant coronary and carotid disease.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to compare the outcomes of patients who underwent carotid artery stenting (CAS) followed by coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with the outcomes of those who underwent isolated CABG without carotid intervention. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, conducted between March 2007 and February 2010, all patients who had significant carotid artery stenosis (>70%) and were candidates for CABG were included. The outcome measures, including 30-day post-stenting complications, cardiac surgery neurological complications, myocardial infarction (MI), and mortality rates, we

Posterior cerebral artery laterality on magnetic resonance angiography predicts long-term functional outcome in middle cerebral artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Prominent posterior cerebral artery (PCA) laterality upon 3-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography is often encountered in patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion. We hypothesized that this sign is correlated with improved functional outcome in patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion treated with intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator. METHODS: Fifty acute ischemic stroke patients with middle cerebral artery occlusion were treated with intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator from April 2007 to October 2009. Al

Sleep deprivation attenuates acute ischemic stroke-induced hippocampal neuronal injury via the IL-38/NF-κB axis.

BACKGROUND: Although epidemiological studies have identified sleep disorders as a risk factor for stroke, animal studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the impact of sleep deprivation (SD). This study aimed to investigate whether SD preconditioning can alleviate early neurological impairment following acute ischemic stroke and to explore the potential role of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-38 (IL-38) in this process. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent 10-day SD preconditioning using a modified multi-platform method before being subjected to transient middle ce

Electroacupuncture attenuates ferroptosis by promoting Nrf2 nuclear translocation and activating Nrf2/SLC7A11/GPX4 pathway in ischemic stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Electroacupuncture has been shown to play a neuroprotective role following ischemic stroke, but the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Ferroptosis has been shown to play a key role in the injury process. In the present study, we wanted to explore whether electroacupuncture could inhibit ferroptosis by promoting nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) nuclear translocation. METHODS: The ischemic stroke model was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) in adult rats. These rats have been randomly divided into the EA + MCAO/R group,

Estimation of Acute Infarct Core and Hypoperfused Region from Baseline Noncontrast Computed Tomography and Computed Tomography Angiography Scans of Patients with Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND: In acute ischemic stroke, the infarct core and hypoperfused regions are key indicators for assessing and prognosticating patients. They are typically estimated with computed tomography perfusion (CTP). However, because noncontrast CT and CT angiography are more widely available, we trained a neural network to estimate the ischemic lesion from noncontrast CT and CT angiography scans. METHODS: In this retrospective study, an nnU-Net model was trained to estimate infarcted and hypoperfused regions from noncontrast CT and CT angiography using reference standards from a commercial CTP

Effect of Postoperative Prolonged sedation with Dexmedetomidine after successful reperfusion with Endovascular Thrombectomy on long-term prognosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke (PPDET): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is a standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) with large vessel occlusion. Hypertension and increased blood pressure variability within the first 24 h after successful reperfusion are related to a higher risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage and higher mortality. AIS patients might suffer from ischemia-reperfusion injury following reperfusion, especially within 24 h. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), a sedative commonly used in EVT, can stabilize hemodynamics by inhibiting the sympathetic nervous system and alleviate ischemia-reperfusion injury

Pure dysarthria and dysarthria-facial paresis syndrome due to internal capsule and/or corona radiata infarction.

BACKGROUND: Pure dysarthria (PD) and dysarthria-facial paresis syndrome (DFP) mainly result from lenticulostriate artery territory infarction. PD and DFP are rare clinical entities, often grouped without distinction. The purpose of this study was to examine clinical and radiographic differences between PD and DFP due to unilateral internal capsule and/or corona radiata infarction. METHODS: Using a database that included consecutive patients with ischemic stroke admitted to the neurological stroke units of three hospitals within 7 days from onset between September 2011 and April 2014, we retro

PCSK9 inhibition attenuates alcohol-induced cardiovascular dysfunction and links hepatic lipid accumulation to impaired myocardial contractile reserve.

Excessive alcohol consumption accelerates cardiovascular aging by promoting oxidative stress, inflammation, lipid dysregulation, fibrotic remodeling, and loss of ventricular-vascular reserve. PCSK9, a key regulator of cholesterol metabolism, has emerged as a mediator of age-related cardiovascular dysfunction and alcohol-associated liver and neurovascular injury. We investigated whether PCSK9 inhibition protects against alcohol-induced cardiovascular dysfunction and associated cardiac-hepatic injury in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to pair-fed control or 35% ethanol liquid diet g
