OBJECTIVES: To investigate age related and site specific variations in turnover and chemistry of the collagen network in healthy tendons as well as the role of collagen remodelling in the degeneration of the supraspinatus tendon (ST-D) in rotator cuff tendinitis.
METHODS: Collagen content and the amount of hydroxylysine (Hyl), hydroxy-lysylpyridinoline (HP), lysylpyridinoline (LP), and the degree of non-enzymatic glycation (pentosidine) were investigated in ST-D and in normal human supraspinatus (ST-N) and biceps brachii tendons (BT-N) by high-performance liquid chromatography.

A large soft tissue mass of the left ankle was documented by ultrasonography in a 24-year-old man. Histologic examination of biopsy samples was consistent with pigmented villonodular synovitis. Operations were conducted on 22 patients with defects in soft tissues and trophic ulcers of cicatrix in the region of the calcaneal tendon. In 16 patients with extensive cicatricial lesions occupying two distal thirds or the whole region, an L-shaped flap of skin and fat was used, it was formed on the postero-lateral distal third of the leg, in the zone of the lateral malleolus and the lateral surface of the foot. Eighty-three patients with ACL reconstructions using the quadriceps patellar tendon graft were evaluated in a 10 year (mean, 5.5 years) follow-up study. It is well known that tendon or muscle interposition can cause fractures to be irreducible by closed means. A rare tendon interposition of extensor carpi ulnaris occurred in an 11-year-old boy. Two cases of distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) disruption and diastasis secondary to distal radial fractures were associated with displacement of the ulnar styloid and extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) into the DRUJ. Both cases had a palpable empty ECU tendon sulcus. In one case surgical exploration revealed that the ulnar styloid, triangular fibrocartilage, and extensor carpi ulnaris tendon had dislocated into the DRUJ as a unit. The end result was good. Forty-four post traumatic paralyses of the brachial plexus were operated on to restore elbow flexion using tendon transfers. We reviewed the cases of eighty-one patients with pigmented villonodular synovitis and giant-cell tumor of the tendon sheath. The average duration of symptoms prior to consulting a physician was twenty-seven months. In a 48-year old man, ossification was seen in the right achilles tendon which was to be interpreted as due to surgical extension of tendon in childhood following operation of talipes equinus. Only few reports have been published in literature, but in these, the x-ray findings were largely identical, and in all cases except one, injuries of the tendon or operations had preceded the condition. Ossification is associated with mild complaints only. It presents a typical pattern of x-ray findings distinguishing it from tendon ossifications or calcifications of other origin.
