BACKGROUND: Congenital lung malformations exist along a spectrum of pathogenesis and disease severity. Extrapulmonary sequestration (EPS), in which nonfunctional lung tissue develops without connection to the tracheobronchial tree, is one rare manifestation of this disease. Atypical vascular anatomy with a systemic feeding vessel characterizes these lesions.

The periareolar access has been the preferred technique used at our institution for minimally invasive cardiac surgery since 2006. The surgical approach consists of video-assisted minithoracotomy in the 4th right intercostal space, through a periareolar incision. BACKGROUND: The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) surveyed cardiothoracic surgeon participants in its Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (ACSD) to learn the extent of surgeon involvement in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures.
METHODS: An electronic survey was delivered to 2,594 surgeons in June 2016. When the survey closed 2 weeks later, 487 completed surveys had been submitted for a response rate of 18.8%.

Intrapulmonary aberrant needles are rarely encountered in clinical practice. A 82-year-old woman, though she was asymptomatic, was referred to our department due to an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray. Chest X-ray and chest computed tomography showed a foreign body suspected to be a sewing needle in the left upper lobe. The needle was successfully removed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.

With a wide excision of skin melanoma localized in areas of the sternum, the sacrum or on the back near body's midline there is often occurred a problem of closing appeared defect. Local tissues are insufficient and performing of free plastic is undesirable because of the unfavorable conditions of the free flap engraftment due to the peculiarities of transplant bed and difficulties of immobilization and fixation of the flap. For exactly such surgical situations we have developed a method of reliable replacement of appeared defects by two adjacent symmetrical rotary flaps.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the use of a novel, double-lumen electrocautery tube (DLET) device for ablating the sympathetic nerve chain in patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis (PPH).
METHODS: Forty-six patients with severe PPH were recruited into the study between November 2010 and February 2012. All patients underwent single port, bilateral video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathicotomy. Twenty-four patients were randomized to receive sympathicotomy using a conventional 5-mm electrocautery hook (hook group) and 22 patients were randomized to the DLET group.

BACKGROUND: Computerized navigation improves the accuracy of minimally invasive pedicle screw placement during spine surgery. Such navigation, however, exposes both the patient and the staff to radiation during surgery. To avoid intraoperative exposure to radiation, tracked ultrasound snapshots-ultrasound image frames coupled with corresponding spatial positions-could be used to map preoperatively defined screw plans into the intraoperative coordinate frame. Seventy-five years ago, a 7-year-old girl underwent the first successful ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus. This procedure transformed her health and was a milestone in the development of cardiac surgery. The operation was performed by Dr. Robert E. Gross, then the surgical chief resident at Boston Children's Hospital, who went on to have a distinguished career in pediatric surgery. The patient is now a great-grandmother and the oldest known survivor of cardiac surgery.
