OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic accuracy of two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound and three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) for the diagnosis of fetal skeletal anomalies.
METHODS: Eleven pregnant women underwent 2D ultrasound and 3D-CT. Ten fetuses presented skeletal anomalies on 2D ultrasound and one fetus had a normal ultrasound exam but a familial history of osteopetrosis. We compared retrospectively the diagnoses established on 2D ultrasound and 3D-CT with the neonatal and/or postmortem work-up, which were used as the gold standard.
RESULTS: 2D ultrasound provided the correct di

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare multisystemic disease that is characterized by recurrent inflammation of the cartilaginous structures of the external ear, nose, joint, larynx, and tracheobronchial tree. Airway involvement is present in up to 50% of patients with the disease and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. We describe a patient with relapsing polychondritis presenting with tracheal and bronchial abnormalities that were identified by an increased uptake on [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

BACKGROUND: Due to the low sensitivity of plain radiography, the diagnosis of early stage ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is often difficult since many patients do not meet the radiographic criteria. The objective of our study was to investigate the diagnostic value of performing multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) of the sacroiliac (SI) joint in the evaluation of AS patients.
METHODS: Thirty seven patients with definite or probable AS were evaluated. Plain radiography and MDCT imaging of the pelvis were performed for evaluating the SI joints. Two radiologists analyzed the images, and they g

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic nasal endoscopy enables clear visualization of all structures of the middle nasal meatus and of the ostiomeatal complex. It is a primary means for diagnosis of all anatomic variations and other pathogenic factors of the lateral nasal wall, which cannot be diagnosed by using anterior/posterior rhinoscopy. Furthermore, the effects of therapy can be endoscopically controlled and, if necessary, a surgical procedure may be performed. Computed tomography has become the imaging study of choice in the diagnosis and management of sinonasal diseases. It provides detailed informa

The differential diagnostic signs of disseminated pulmonary processes were defined by computed tomography. A hundred and sixty-seven patients, including 117 (70%) with disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis (DPT) and 50 (30%) with alveolitis, were examined. Their mean age was 32.3 +/- 5.1 years; the history of disease averaged 4.6 +/- 1.2 years. Acute, subacute, and chronic DPT was observed in 17 (14.5%), 32 (27.3%), and 68 (58.1%) patients, respectively. Idiopathic fibrosing alveolitis (IFA) was seen in 38 patients; 12 patients had exogenous allergic alveolitis (EAA). IFA and EAA were chronic. P

Deep brain simulation (DBS) is effective for the treatment of various diseases including Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. However, anatomical targeting combined with microelectrode mapping of the region requires significant surgical time. Also, the fine-tipped microelectrode imposes a risk of hemorrhage in the event that the trajectory intersects subcortical vessels. To reduce the operation time and the risk of hemorrhage, we propose to use optical coherence tomography (OCT) to guide the insertion of the DBS probe. We conducted in vitro experiments in the rat brain to study the feasib

INTRODUCTION: Three-dimensional (3D) analysis is essential for making a precise diagnosis of craniofacial morphology. Two-dimensional (2D) x-ray films are used to understand 3D structures. However, 2D images have several limitations. This article proposes a new type of cephalometric analysis by using 3D computed tomography.
METHODS: Axial images of 30 subjects (16 men; mean age, 19.2 years; 14 women, mean age, 20.5 years) were reconstructed into 3D models by using Vworks 4.0 (Cybermed, Seoul, Korea). The 3D models were measured with Vsurgery (Cybermed). The zygoma, maxilla, mandible, and faci

OBJECT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of progression of traumatic intracranial lesions in children by comparing initial and subsequent computed tomography (CT) scans. Reserving repeated CT imaging for patients who harbor higher-risk lesions may reduce overall radiation exposure, the need for sedative agents, and cost.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective cohort study in 268 patients younger than 18 years of age who underwent repeated CT scanning within 24 hours of their initial CT scanning procedure. The risk of progression between the initial and repeated CT sc
