Helicobacter pylori causes specific ultrastructural changes to the gastric mucosa. To date, there have been few studies on pepsinogen polymorphism. The present study examines the polymorphism of pepsinogen by PAGE in 155 duodenal ulcer cases and 92 control subjects. The Indian population presents a higher frequency of the B phenotype (associated with absence of the pg 5 fraction) and the C haplotype compared to other populations. Results of the studies made showed that among the examined patients who took part in the elimination of the aftermath of the Chernobyl accident, a positive atropin test was recordable in 38 (63%), a negative one in 16 (27%), weakly positive in 6(10%). In the control group of patients with duodenal ulcer a positive atropin test was in 73%, a negative one in 9%, and weakly positive in 18%. We report the case of a 72-year-old woman hospitalized for dysphagia and odynophagia due to an ulcer of the esophagus. Thoracic CT-scan and esophageal endosonography revealed a tumour of the mediastinum which invaded the esophagus. Per-operative biopsies concluded to a probable malignant fibrous histiocytoma.

BACKGROUND: Mooren's ulcer is a rare autoimmunologic disease of the cornea. Many forms of medical and surgical treatments have been proposed in the past, but none of them was regularly successful. Severe progressive cases of Mooren's ulcer are therefore still a blinding disease. Only the use of systemic cyclosporin A (CSA) treatment appears for the first time to have a significant positive effect on the outcome.

Two hundreds patients of peptic ulcer diagnosed by fiber-gastroscope treated with Yuyang powder (YYP) was observed and compared with patient treated with cimetidine for control. Results showed that the curative rate of YYP on peptic ulcer was 88.1%, the total effective rate was 96%, similar to that of cimetidine. Clinicopsychologic and psychophysiologic evaluation was done in 290 patients with duodenal ulcer during the stage of exacerbation. The researchers of the Department of Medical and Biological Cybernetics and Hospital Surgery Department No. 2 of the Russian State Medical University have developed the first stage of an automatic diagnostic system to evaluate gastroduodenal motor function by intracavitary multichannel manometry. The system makes diagnostic syndromal conclusions by using an expert approach and statistic data analysis. The percentage of correct diagnoses was 92 and 80%, respectively. The system may be useful at multidisciplinary hospitals, diagnostic centers, and specialized gastroenterological care facilities.

Prophylactic (early elective) surgery of bleeding gastroduodenal ulcers is performed to avoid rebleeding with a supposed high risk. Because early elective surgery was burdened with high risk for complications and because surgery for rebleeding ulcers had no higher risk, we left these procedures and performed repeated endoscopic treatment of these patients instead.
