Insight on Diagnosis and Treatment From Over a Decade of Research Through the University of Chicago Monogenic Diabetes Registry.

Monogenic diabetes is a category of diabetes mellitus caused by a single gene mutation or chromosomal abnormality, usually sub-classified as either neonatal diabetes or maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY). Although monogenic diabetes affects up to 3.5% of all patients with diabetes diagnosed before age 30, misdiagnosis and/or improper treatment occurs frequently. The University of Chicago Monogenic Diabetes Registry, established in 2008, offers insight into the diagnosis, treatment, and natural history of individuals known or suspected to have monogenic diabetes. Those interested in pa

A randomised controlled trial evaluating two universal prevention programs for children: Building resilience to manage worry.

BACKGROUND: Childhood anxiety and depression lead to great distress and impairment. Preventing them simultaneously in early life is critically important. We evaluated the long-term efficacy of an emotion regulation-based (ER) and a behavioural activation-based (BA) program. Both aimed to build resilience to prevent worry, a transdiagnostic feature across anxiety and depression. METHODS: Participants were 316 students (52.2% female; 8-13 years) from six South Australian primary schools. Schools were randomised to the ER, BA or a control condition. Measures of resilience, worry, anxiety, and de

Motives for gambling, cognitive distortions, and irresponsible gambling: Proposal for an explanatory model of gambling addiction in university students.

There are many factors that appear to be directly related to the development of gambling addiction problems, and it is important to understand these relationships from a clinical perspective in order to develop prevention and intervention programs. This research seeks to analyze the relationships these problems have with gambling motives, cognitive distortions and irresponsible gambling behavior, and proposes an explanatory model of gambling addiction. The sample was made up of 258 adults residing in the province of Valencia (59.5% women), with a mean age of 20.95 years (SD = 2.19). A series o

Longitudinal analysis of client appointment adherence under Universal Test and Treat strategy: A stepped-wedge trial.

OBJECTIVES: Universal Test and Treat (UTT) strategies are being adopted across sub-Saharan Africa based on clinical benefits to morbidity and mortality and to attain targets of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Universal Test and Treat is expected to change the client population at clinics, due to more asymptomatic HIV clients initiating antiretroviral therapy (ART). We assessed the impact of UTT on client appointment adherence at 14 government-managed health facilities in Eswatini's public sector health system. METHODS: We assessed the impact of UTT on client adherence

Implementation of near-universal hydroxyurea uptake among children with sickle cell anemia: A single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Without early initiation of disease-modifying therapy, the acute and chronic complications of sickle cell anemia (SCA) begin early in childhood and progress throughout life. Hydroxyurea is a safe and effective medication that reduces or prevents most SCA-related complications. Despite recommendations to prescribe hydroxyurea for all children with SCA as young as 9 months, utilization remains low. PROCEDURE: We completed a retrospective review of hydroxyurea-prescribing practices and associated clinical outcomes at our institution over a 10-year period before and after the 2014 Nat

Prevalence and predicting factors of perceived stress among Bangladeshi university students using machine learning algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Stress-related mental health problems are one of the most common causes of the burden in university students worldwide. Many studies have been conducted to predict the prevalence of stress among university students, however most of these analyses were predominantly performed using the basic logistic regression (LR) model. As an alternative, we used the advanced machine learning (ML) approaches for detecting significant risk factors and to predict the prevalence of stress among Bangladeshi university students. METHODS: This prevalence study surveyed 355 students from twenty-eight d
