Here we report on the antimicrobial resistance amongst Gram-negative isolates (excluding Acinetobacter spp.) collected from blood culture sources at European study sites as part of the global Tigecycline Evaluation and Surveillance Trial (T.E.S.T.) from the study start in 2004 until August 2009. All isolates were collected and tested for minimum inhibitory concentrations using Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute methodology. Over the collection period, extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production was recorded in 21.1% of Klebsiella pneumoniae, 2.6% of Klebsiella oxytoca and 11.3% of

There is a high incidence of infections caused by betalactamase-producing Gram-negative microorganisms in Brazil. These organisms are of clinical and epidemiological importance, since their mobile genetic elements facilitate cross-infection. The present study was conducted in sentinel rectal swabs from patients admitted to a cardiac surgery hospital in Rio de Janeiro, from January through December 2007, in a consecutive manner. The aim of the study was to characterize the genotype and phenotype of these isolates from colonized patients. Biochemical tests, antimicrobial susceptibility tests, a

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and antibiotic resistance rates of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Proteus mirabilis strains isolated from inpatients at the Split University Hospital (southern Croatia) during a survey performed between 2005 and 2008. A total of 2152 consecutive isolates of P. mirabilis were isolated. The prevalence was 0.5 % in 2005 and increased significantly to 20.9 % by 2008. Strains were most frequently isolated from urine (36.5 %) and bronchial aspirates and wound swabs (11.3 %). ESBL-producing P. mirabilis isolates showed very high re

Clinically-significant Gram-negative species remain mostly Enterobacteriaceae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii. Carbapenem molecules are often the last resort for treating infections due to multidrug resistant isolates. In Enterobacteriaceae, resistance to carbapenems may result from combined mechanisms of resistance associating b-lactamases with weak (if any) intrinsic carbapenemase activity and decreased outer membrane permeability, or from true carbapenemases. KPC-type enzymes (partially inhibited by clavulanic acid) have been identified mostly in Klebsiella pneumoniae, f

Many studies have explored the association between antibiotic use and antibiotic resistance. However, methods employed in these studies to categorise prior antibiotic use (e.g. by class, by spectrum) have not been well described. The impact of using different categorisation methods on identifying risk factors for resistance is unknown. To explore these issues, we focused on extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. (ESBL-EK) as a model. First, we conducted a systematic review of studies of risk factors for ESBL-EK to characterise past approaches to categor

The effect of S-1108, a new oral cephem antibiotic, on intestinal bacterial flora was studied in tetra-contaminated mice and pediatric patients. S-1108 in a fine granular form was administered at a dose of 15 mg/kg once a day for 5 consecutive days to mice infected with Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacteroides fragilis and Bifidobacterium breve. The viable fecal bacterial cell count of each of these 4 species of bacteria was slightly reduced in 5 days after the start of the drug administration. Five boys (weighing 12.0 to 42.0 kg) with bacterial infections were entered into this pe

BACKGROUND: Urban wastewater systems (UWSs) act as reservoirs and conduits for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), with plasmids playing a central role in their spread. Despite their significance, the diversity and persistence of plasmids in UWSs remain underexplored.
RESULTS: This study applies a multi-omics approach, including metagenomic and direct plasmidome sequencing, high-throughput qPCR array, and whole genome sequencing of plasmid isolates, to comprehensively profile the microbial plasmidome and resistome on 78 samples across UWSs in Denmark, Spain, and the UK. Canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) is a common infection that is seen in veterinary practice. The condition is generally mild, self-limiting and does not usually require the use of antibiotics in the treatment of the infection. The aims of this study were to analyse risk factors for CIRD in a large sentinel UK pet population and secondly, identify risk factors for antibiotics being prescribed to cases of CIRD. Dogs were included in the study based on a regular expression applied to the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) database at the University of Liverpool. A g

Robot-assisted transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) is a safe and effective platform for the local excision of early rectal lesions. While postoperative complications such as bleeding or contained perforation are recognized, rapidly progressive retroperitoneal sepsis remains an exceedingly rare occurrence. A 56-year-old male underwent robot-assisted TAMIS for a pT1 grade 1 rectal neuroendocrine tumor (NET). Despite successful circumferential excision and defect closure with sutures, the patient developed fever, hypotension, and rising lactaemia within 24 hours. Computed tomography demo

BACKGROUND: Chlorhexidine, a well-established antiseptic in systemic medicine and dentistry, has long been overlooked in ophthalmology outside its role in Acanthamoeba keratitis. However, recent evidence supports its potential as an effective adjunct or alternative agent in multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial keratitis, where treatment options remain limited and therapeutic challenges are escalating. This review aims to revisit ocular use of chlorhexidine.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed in the PubMed database using combinations of the following keywords: "chlorhexidine", "kerat

Escherichia coli is a major inhabitant of the intestinal tract of most mammalian species, including humans and animals. This bacterium is classified into four main phylogenetic groups (A, B1, B2, D), with pathogenic strains primarily belonging to group B2 and, to a lesser extent, group D. This study investigated the correlation between E. coli phylogenetic groups and antibiotic resistance by analyzing 144 strains (95 clinical, 49 food-derived). Species identification was confirmed via uidA gene PCR, and antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Exte

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative clinical pathogen, particularly affecting immunocompromised patients, those with cystic fibrosis, and burn victims. It causes chronic infections, especially in hospital settings, and is a significant contributor to nosocomial infections. Its capacity to create biofilms resistant to antibiotics is the reason for its infamous persistence in clinical settings. P. aeruginosa infections can affect any area of the body because the bacteria's biofilm enables it to stick to any surface, living or non-living. One of the primary clinical challenges in treating P

Escherichia coli can contaminate the marine environment through sewage and accumulate in bivalve molluscs. We assessed antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mechanisms and genetic diversity of 69 E. coli isolates recovered from in natura, boiled, and purchased Perna perna mussels in Niterói city, Brazil. All isolates were sensitive to cefoxitin, imipenem, meropenem, and fosfomycin. In contrast, 61 (88.4%) isolates were not susceptible to streptomycin. We found ten (14.5%) multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production was detected in 30 (43.5%) isolates, with 1

Escherichia coli is a significant pathogen associated with foodborne outbreaks. This study investigated the presence of diarrheagenic, antimicrobial-resistant, and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli in free-range poultry products in a tropical region. MALDI-TOF/VITEK® 2 system and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) assays were used to detect E. coli, phenotypical antimicrobial resistance profile, virulence, and β-lactam genes. Escherichia coli was identified in 92.3% of poultry meat samples (24/26) and 15.8% of egg samples (6/38 pools). Of these isolates, 60% (18/30) were c
