Having numerous melanocytic nevi increases melanoma risk. Few studies have enumerated nevi in children and re-examined them as adults. We aimed to determine if childhood nevus-counts predict nevus-prone adults, and further explore the relevance of host-factors and sun-exposure. Fifty-one Caucasian residents of Townsville (19.16° S, Queensland, Australia) had full-body nevus-counts aged 1-6 and 21-31 years-old. Sun-exposure was determined from questionnaires. Children in the upper-quartile of nevus-counts acquired nevi more rapidly than those in the bottom-quartile (13.3 versus 4.7 nevi/year; p

In this investigation, gene-environment-gender interaction effects in predicting child borderline personality disorder symptomatology among maltreated and nonmaltreated low-income children (N = 1,051) were examined. In the context of a summer research camp, adult-, peer-, and self-report assessments of borderline precursor indicators were obtained, as well as child self-report on the Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children. Genetic variants of the oxytocin receptor genotype and the FK506 binding protein 5 gene CATT haplotype were investigated. Children who self-reported high levels

BACKGROUND: Penicillin skin testing has been validated in the evaluation of adult patients with penicillin allergy. However, the commercially available benzylpenicilloyl polylysine (Pre-Pen) is not indicated in the pediatric population. Moreover, the safety and validity of penicillin skin testing in the pediatric population has not been well studied.
OBJECTIVE: We describe the safety and validity of penicillin skin testing in the evaluation of children with a history of penicillin allergy.
METHODS: Children (<18 years) with a history of penicillin allergy were evaluated with penicillin skin

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In adults with narcolepsy, periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS) occur more frequently than in control population, and presence of increased PLMS is associated with greater sleep disruption and shorter mean sleep latency. This study was performed to determine whether PLMS are common in children with narcolepsy, and whether the presence of PLMS is associated with greater sleep disruption.
DESIGN: Demographic and polysomnographic information were collected from consecutive patients diagnosed with narcolepsy identified retrospectively by diagnosis-based search. Descriptive da

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether brain volume, as assessed on MRI scans, differs between individuals with autism and control subjects, and whether such differences are affected by age.
BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found increased brain weight, head circumference, and MRI brain volume in children with autism. However, studies of brain size in adults with autism have yielded conflicting results. The authors hypothesize that enlargement of the brain may be a feature of brain development during early childhood in autism that normalizes with maturational processes.
METHODS: The authors measur

Dissociation reflects disruptions in the integration of memories, perception, and identity into a coherent sense of self, and may develop following childhood maltreatment. The preschool years were identified as an important period for the development of dissociation. However, prior research has not examined the development of dissociation during this time. In order to address this gap, evidence of dissociation in 45 maltreated children, assessed for sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect, was compared with dissociation in 33 nonmaltreated children. Rather than depend on adult observer repor

BACKGROUND: Because tuberculosis (TB) in children implies recent infection, children serve as sentinels for disease transmission within a community. Despite the significance of diagnosing tuberculosis in children, most cases are diagnosed on clinical evidence rather than laboratory findings.
METHODS: We analyzed the demographic and clinical presentation of 156 children with culture proven tuberculosis using Epi-Info Version 6.
RESULTS: Although the clinical characteristics of this population were generally consistent with those seen in previous studies, several unexpected results were observ

BACKGROUND: Introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) of limited valency is justified in Africa by the high burden of pneumococcal disease. Long-term beneficial effects of PCVs may be countered by serotype replacement. We aimed to determine the impact of PCV-7 vaccination on pneumococcal carriage in rural Gambia.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: A cluster-randomized (by village) trial of the impact of PCV-7 on pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage was conducted in 21 Gambian villages between December 2003 to June 2008 (5,441 inhabitants in 2006). Analysis was complemented with data obtained

The rate of diagnosis of autism in adults has increased over recent years; however, the profile of behaviours in these individuals is less understood than the profile seen in those diagnosed in childhood. Better understanding of this profile will be essential to identify and remove potential barriers to diagnosis. Using an abbreviated form of the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders, comparisons were drawn between the profile of a sample of able adults diagnosed in adulthood and the profile of a sample of able children. Results revealed both similarities and differences.

Follicular lymphoma, although common in adults, is rare in children. Pediatric follicular lymphoma has a more favorable prognosis than adult follicular lymphoma, even though it is often of higher grade. Children with follicular lymphomas are generally at a lower clinical stage, respond well to less aggressive therapy, and have a better survival than adults. Follicular lymphoma must be distinguished from reactive follicular hyperplasia, which it may mimic. Immunohistochemical and molecular markers serve to facilitate this distinction, as well as careful attention to clinical and morphologic det

Transient synovitis of the hip is an acute and self-limited disease commonly seen in children. It is the most common cause of acute hip pain in children ages 3 to 10. It is not considered a disease of adults. It usually only affects one hip. The child may complain of pain that is much worse with walking and may actually walk with a limp. The symptoms usually improve in 4 to 5 days. Over-the-counter pain medicines (acetaminophen, ibuprofen) may help. There is usually no associated residual deficit. Currently, three cases in the literature report the same presentation and symptomatology in adult

An epidemiological study of fascioliasis and/or schistosomiasis was conducted in Abis 1 village. Stool specimens were collected from 2492 individuals and examined. Fascioliasis, alone or combined with schistosomiasis, was more prevalent among children aged between 5 years and 15 years than in adults. Serum procollagen III peptide (PIIIP) levels were determined as an indicator of active fibrosis, and liver histopathology and ultrasonography used as indicators of established fibrosis. PIIIP levels were significantly higher in children than in adults, and in mixed infections than in fascioliasis

Nineteen patients aged 8 months to 62 years suffering from tuberculous meningoencephalomyelitis were followed up from 1968 to 1987. The given pattern of tuberculous meningitis was established to occur mostly in adults. In children and adolescents the disease onset was mostly acute or subacute, whereas in adults, it was progressive. It was also established that as a rule children and adolescents manifested a descending pattern of meningoencephalomyelitis whereas adults an ascending one. The disease was marked by clinical polymorphism, creating certain difficulties for early diagnosis. Tuberculo

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Overweight and obesity are modifiable risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in the general population, but their prevalence in individuals with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) and whether they confer additional risk of ASCVD independent of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) remains unclear.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis was conducted in 35 540 patients with HeFH across 50 countries, in the EAS FH Studies Collaboration registry. Prevalence of World Health Organization-defined body mass index categories was investigated in adults (n = 2

PURPOSE: Given the potential role of light and its wavelength on ocular growth, this study investigated the effect of short-term exposure to red, cyan and blue light on ocular biometry in humans.
METHODS: Forty-four young adults and 20 children, comprising emmetropes and myopes, underwent 2-h sessions of cyan (507 nm), red (638 nm) and broadband white light on three separate days via light-emitting glasses. Additionally, young adults were exposed to blue light (454 nm) on an additional day. Axial length (AL) and choroidal thickness (CT) were measured in the right eye before the light exposure

OBJECTIVES: Mediastinal neurogenic tumours are uncommon and often benign neoplasms mostly located in the posterior mediastinum and usually diagnosed incidentally. We reviewed our results after surgical resection. We compared patient characteristics and tumour nature between children and adults. Differences between thoracoscopic and open approach were analysed.
METHODS: Departmental thoracic surgical database was queried for primary mediastinal neurogenic tumours resected between 1992 and 2017. Data included demographics, pathology, tumour nature, symptoms, surgical approach and postoperative

BACKGROUND: In adults, acquired pressure-overload left ventricular hypertrophy can result in myocardial ischemia, which may be due in part to insufficient capillary growth during development of hypertrophy. The coronary microvascular response to congenital pressure-overload hypertrophy in children has not been previously characterized.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Average capillary density and heterogeneity of capillary spacing were measured in 63 postmortem human hearts with left ventricular hypertrophy and control hearts without heart disease. Pathology specimens were chosen that had left ventricul

Intussusception is an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction in adults. Unlike children, the diagnosis of intussusception in adults is often difficult due to its usually chronic history. A case of adult ileocolic intussusception secondary to metastatic melanoma is presented to discuss the efficiency of ultrasonography, characteristic CT features and the etiology of this disease.

Children around ages 5-6 begin valuing social mindfulness, where one leaves a diverse choice for others when selecting an item for themselves. This study investigated how Han Chinese 4- to 9-year-olds and adults may consider protagonists' preference (unknown, preferring the unique, or identical items) in their evaluations of socially mindful actions. Results show that, with age, children increasingly rate leaving a choice as nicer, both when the protagonist's preference is unknown and for the unique item. However, when the protagonist prefers identical items, neither children nor adults differ
