Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are central nervous system (CNS) neurons that transmit visual information from the retina to the brain. Apoptotic RGC degeneration causes visual impairment that can be modeled by optic nerve crush. BACKGROUND: Donation after circulatory death (DCD) expands the heart donor pool, but outcomes after adult heart retransplantation (re-TX) are not well defined.
METHODS: Using UNOS STAR data (January 1, 2019 to October 1, 2025), we studied adults undergoing orthotopic re-TX. Exposure was donor mechanism (DCD vs donation after brain death [DBD]). OBJECTIVES: Optimal care of potential donors can lead to successful transplantation. Hemodynamic instability is a common complication in deceased potential donors. The most common underlying causes are hormonal and electrolyte disturbances as well as a hyperinflammatory state, which is rooted in activation of the cytokine cascade.
