Effects of biomass burning on CO, HCN, C2H6, C2H2 and H2CO during long-term FTIR measurements in Hefei, China.

High-resolution solar absorption spectra were continuously collected by a ground-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer to retrieve the total column of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), ethane (C2H6), acetylene (C2H2), and formaldehyde (H2CO). The time series and variation characteristics of these gases were analyzed. The biomass combustion process is identified by using the correlations between the monthly mean deviations of HCN, C2H6, C2H2 and H2CO versus CO and satellite fire point data. The months with high correlation coefficients (R > 0.8) and peaks of fire poin

Utility of customized 3D compression mask with pressure sensors on facial burn scars: A single-blinded, randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: A pressure of approximately 15-25 mmHg is used for effective compression therapy to prevent and treat hypertrophic scar formation in patients with burns. However, conventional facial compression garments present challenges owing to inadequate pressure distribution in curved areas such as the cheeks, around the mouth, and the slope of the nose. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of a custom-made 3D compression mask equipped with pressure sensors to treat facial burn scars. METHODS: This single-blinded, prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted between May and October

LSD1 inhibition by tranylcypromine hydrochloride reduces alkali burn-induced corneal neovascularization and ferroptosis by suppressing HIF-1α pathway.

BACKGROUND: Corneal neovascularization (CNV) is a sight-threatening condition that necessitates epigenetic control. The role of lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1) in CNV remains unclear, despite its established significance in tumor angiogenesis regulation. METHODS: An alkali burn-induced CNV mouse model was used in vivo. The effects of LSD1 inhibitor tranylcypromine hydrochloride (TCP) were examined through slit lamp, histological staining, and immunofluorescence. The expression of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH) levels were assessed in corneal tiss

Evaluation of the Role of a Clinical Pharmacist on Medication Management in an Adult Burn Clinic via a Collaborative Drug Therapy Management Protocol.

Historically, pharmacists have not been formally involved in managing burn clinic patients. Collaborative Drug Therapy Management (CDTM) protocols allow pharmacists working within a defined context to independently assume responsibility for direct patient care activities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the number and type of medication-related interventions made by a clinical pharmacist, in an adult burn clinic, via a CDTM protocol. The protocol allows pharmacists to independently manage the following disease states: pain, agitation, delirium, insomnia, venous thromboembolism, ski

Prevalence and correlates of burn-out among Nigerian medical doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Physician burn-out was an issue before the pandemic. Medical personnel have faced several clinical and non-clinical challenges because of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, which predisposes them to burn-out. There is a paucity of studies that shed light on the level of burn-out and its association with work-related factors for Nigerian medical doctors. This study aims to examine the level of burn-out among Nigerian medical doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic and explore possible associations between burn-out and sociodemographic, work-related and COVID-19-related fact

Cohort analysis of 50% lethal area (LA50) and associating factors in burn patients based on quality improvements and health policies.

Burn injuries are among the common traumatic injuries, which can be accompanied with lifelong morbidity and mortality. The Lethal Area Fifty Percent (LA50) index is another reliable outcome measurement tool that assesses the standard of medical care at burn centers. It is widely used as a benchmark for assessing the quality of burn care and is considered the percentage at which 50% of burn patients are expected to die because of burn-related injuries. We aimed to determine and compare the LA50 in burn patients admitted to Shiraz Burn Referral Centers in 2018-2021 and 2011-2018 with regard to i

A prospective study for an alternative probe site for pulse oximetry measurement in male patients with severe burn trauma: penile shaf.

BACKGROUND: Authors widely use pulse oximetry in clinical monitoring of heart rate (HR) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) by attachment to the fingers; however, there can be a need for an alternative attachment site, especially for burned patients. We investigate the availability of a pulse oximeter probe attached to the penile shaft as an alternative site in pediatric male patients if all extremities became unavailable for pulse oximetry measurement due to severe burn and/or trauma. METHODS: We designed a prospective comparative study in a training and research hospital. After local et

Effects of self-perceived psychological stress on clinical symptoms, cortisol, and cortisol/ACTH ratio in patients with burning mouth syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress is a crucial parameter in defining the symptoms of burning mouth syndrome (BMS). We hypothesized that the level of psychological stress in patients with BMS would correlate with severity of clinical symptoms, cortisol levels, and cortisol/ adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) ratio. We aimed to comprehensively investigate the influence of clinical and hematologic parameters on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, particularly concerning the presence or absence of self-perceived psychological stress in patients with BMS. In addition, we aimed to identify param

Soil Organic Matter Molecular Composition Shifts Driven by Forest Regrowth or Pasture after Slash-and-Burn of Amazon Forest.

Slash-and-burn of Amazon Forest (AF) for pasture establishment has increased the occurrence of AF wildfires. Recent studies emphasize soil organic matter (SOM) molecular composition as a principal driver of post-fire forest regrowth and restoration of AF anti-wildfire ambience. Nevertheless, SOM chemical shifts caused by AF fires and post-fire vegetation are rarely investigated at a molecular level. We employed pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to reveal molecular changes in SOM (0-10, 40-50 cm depth) of a slash-burn-and-20-month-regrowth AF (BAF) and a 23-year Brachiaria pasture

Molecular characterizations of antibiotic resistance, biofilm formation, and virulence determinants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from burn wound infection.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries result in disruption of the skin barrier against opportunistic infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the main infectious agents colonizing burn wounds and making severe infections. Biofilm production and other virulence factors along with antibiotic resistance limit appropriate treatment options and time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wound samples were collected from hospitalized burn patients. P. aeruginosa isolates and related virulence factors identified by the standard biochemical and molecular methods. Antibiotic resistance patterns were determined by the disc

Disulfiram Ophthalmic Solution Inhibited Macrophage Infiltration by Suppressing Macrophage Pseudopodia Formation in a Rat Corneal Alkali Burn Model.

FROUNT is an intracellular protein that promotes pseudopodia formation by binding to the chemokine receptors CCR2 and CCR5 on macrophages. Recently, disulfiram (DSF), a drug treatment for alcoholism, was found to have FROUNT inhibitory activity. In this study, we investigated the effect of DSF eye drops in a rat corneal alkali burn model. After alkali burn, 0.5% DSF eye drops (DSF group) and vehicle eye drops (Vehicle group) were administered twice daily. Immunohistochemical observations and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analyses were performed at 6 h and 1

Nutritional Support with Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Burn Patients: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: In burn patients, the profound effect of nutritional support on improved wound healing and a reduced rate of hospitalization and mortality has been documented. Fish oil as a primary source of omega-3 fatty acids in nutritional support may attenuate the inflammatory response and enhance immune function; however, unclear effects on the improvement of clinical outcomes in burn patients remain. METHODS: The systematic literature review was conducted by searching the electronic databases: Cochrane Library, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus to assess the randomized controlled trials of
