The Absence of a Proper Hepatic Artery: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Pancreaticoduodenectomy, liver transplantation, cholecystectomy, and surgical management of traumatic injuries are all dependent on in-depth knowledge of the anatomy of the common hepatic artery and its subsequent divisions. The common hepatic artery arises from the celiac trunk, which is the first major branch of the abdominal aorta. The common hepatic artery bifurcates into the gastroduodenal artery traveling inferiorly behind the duodenal bulb and the proper hepatic artery continues laterally toward the liver within the hepatoduodenal ligament. The proper hepatic artery provides

Anterior Inferior Tibiofibular Ligament Suture Tape Augmentation for Isolated Syndesmotic Injuries.

BACKGROUND: The best operative construct and technique for treatment of isolated syndesmotic injuries is highly debated. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the addition of anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) suture repair or suture tape (ST) augmentation provides any biomechanical advantage to the operative repair of an isolated syndesmotic injury. METHODS: Twelve lower leg specimens underwent biomechanical testing in 6 states: (1) intact, (2) AITFL suture repair, (3) AITFL suture repair + transsyndesmotic suture button (SB), (4) AITFL suture repair + ST augmentati

Biomechanical Comparison of Cannulated Screw Osteosynthesis With Tension-Band Wiring for Proximal Fractures of the Fifth Metatarsal (Jones Fracture).

Jones fractures, which lie at the junction of the diaphysis to the metaphysis of the fifth metatarsal, are a well-described clinical issue. There are various surgical approaches, including the commonly performed cannulated screw osteosyntheses, and the less frequently used tension-band approach. The aim is to compare the biomechanical stability of these osteosyntheses. We performed an osteotomy on 16 fresh frozen fifth metatarsal bones from body donors representing a Jones fracture. The fractures were treated pairwise with screw osteosynthesis or tension-band wiring. This was followed by cycli

Surgical Anatomy of the Radial Nerve at the Dorsal Region of the Humerus: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Surgery for humeral shaft fractures is associated with a high risk of iatrogenic radial nerve palsy (RNP). Plausible causes are difficult anatomical conditions and variants. METHODS: We performed a cadaveric study with 23 specimens (13 female and 10 male Caucasian donors) to assess the course and anatomy of the radial nerve (RN) with its branches alongside the humeral shaft. The accuracy of identification of the RN in the surgical field was analyzed by measuring the location, course, diameter, and form of each nerve and vessel of interest. RESULTS: The RN is not a single structur…

Stress radiographic assessment of collateral ligament constraints on the feline tarsocrural joint.

INTRODUCTION: This cadaveric study describes the collateral ligament constraints on the feline tarsocrural joint using stress radiography. METHODS: Thirty-six feline cadaveric hindlimbs free of orthopaedic disease were placed in a custom-made jig and controlled stress radiography was performed before and after transection of one, or both collateral ligaments. Changes in varus and valgus deviation and pronation and supination were measured at three limb angles (extension, 120o flexion and 90o flexion). RESULTS: There was a significant positive percentage change in the mean angle of varus devi…

Editorial Commentary: Increased Graft Thickness With Superior Capsular Reconstruction Results in Improved Acromiohumeral Distance, but Increased Graft Tear Rate and Lateral Acromial Erosion.

For the treatment of irreparable posterosuperior rotator cuff tears of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus, superior capsular reconstruction (SCR) has continued to supplant other less successful and/or reproducible techniques, including partial rotator cuff repair and latissimus tendon transfer. After its initial description utilizing a folded fascia lata autograft with a thickness of up to 8 mm, many in North America adapted their surgical technique to use commercially available human dermal allograft to mitigate donor site morbidity. Early series have revealed the importance of graft thickne

The lateral collateral ligament complex of the elbow in a Thai population: an anatomical study of 56 cadaveric specimens.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the anatomical features of the lateral collateral complex (LCC) of the elbow in a Thai population. We dissected 56 cadaveric elbows and described the LCC three-dimensionally in sagittal and coronal planes. We found that the characteristics differed from previous reports in other ethnic populations. In the sagittal plane, the centre of the origin of the LCC was located 3 mm anteriorly and 4 mm inferiorly to the apex of the lateral humerus epicondyle, and in the coronal plane it was 4 mm deep. The vertical distance between the origin of the lateral ul…

A new knee arthrometer demonstrated to be reliable and accurate to assess anterior tibial translation in comparison with stress radiographs.

INTRODUCTION: For several years, many arthrometers have been developed to assess anterior knee laxity. The aim of our study was to evaluate the validity of a new practical and handy testing device with the hypothesis that the new arthrometer had good validity in terms of reliability and accuracy. METHODS: Lachman test was performed on five fresh frozen cadaveric knees by five examiners. Anterior tibial translation (ATT) was measured with a new arthrometer (BLU-DAT) and on lateral stress radiographs. Data on ATT were obtained under 7 kg (69 N), 9 kg (88 N), and maximum manual traction (MMT). T…

Intracranial Displacement Measurements Within Targeted Anatomical Regions of a Postmortem Human Surrogate Brain Subjected to Impact.

The dynamic response of the human brain subjected to impulsive loading conditions is of fundamental importance to the understanding of traumatic brain injuries. Due to the complexity of such measurements, the existing experimental datasets available to researchers are sparse. However, these measurements are used extensively in the validation of complex finite element models used in the design of protective equipment and the development of injury mitigation strategies. The primary objective of this study was to develop a comprehensive methodology to measure displacement in specific anatomical r

Topographic location and branching pattern of the superior mesenteric artery with its clinical relevance: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: The topographic location of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and its branching pattern are usually arbitrary in textbooks. This study, therefore, aims to provide topographic information of SMA with reference to the vertebral bodies, ventral branches of aorta and branching pattern of SMA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 35 embalmed adult human cadavers. We performed detailed dissection of the SMA to topographically locate its origin in respect to vertebral level and other ventral branches of the abdominal aorta. We have categorised the branching pattern of SMA…

Glenoid concavity has a higher impact on shoulder stability than the size of a bony defect.

PURPOSE: Surgical treatment of shoulder instability caused by anterior glenoid bone loss is based on a critical threshold of the defect size … the joint can resist related to a medial compression force. This ratio was determined for 17 human cadaveric glenoids in a robotic test setup depending on osteochondral concavity and anterior defect size. Bony defects were created gradually, and a 3D measuring arm was used for morphometric measurements. The influence of defect size and concavity on the S …
