The influence of temperature and applied magnetic fields on photoluminescence (PL) emission and electronic energy transfer (ET) of both isolated and aggregated CdSe nanocrystals was investigated. Following 400-nm excitation, temperature-dependent, intensity-integrated and energy-resolved PL measurements were used to quantify the emission wavelength and amplitude of isolated CdSe nanocrystals. The results indicated an approximately three-fold increase in PL intensity upon decreasing the temperature from 300 K to 6 K; this was attributed to a reduction of charge carrier access to nanocrystal sur

In this paper, methoxypoly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ε-caprolactone) (MPEG-PCL) micelle formulations as promising nano-carriers for poorly water soluble drugs were investigated for the delivery of diclofenac to the eye. Diclofenac loaded MPEG-PCL micelles were prepared by a simple solvent-diffusion method and characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetery (DSC), etc. With the analysis of XRD and DSC, the diclofenac was present as an amorphous state in the formulation. CONTEXT: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous disorder where insulin resistance might be involved in the development of endocrine and metabolic abnormalities. It has recently been shown that the FTO gene modifies weight, fat mass and insulin sensitivity in women with PCOS, where its role might be larger than in other phenotypes.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of a variation of the FTO gene on carbohydrate and lipid oxidation in PCOS women.
PATIENTS: The study group consisted of 65 women with PCOS and 28 healthy, normally menstruating women.

The current 'Darwinian' synthesis of the hygiene (or 'Old Friends') hypothesis suggests that the increase in chronic inflammatory disorders that started in Europe in the mid-19th century and progressed until the late 20th century is at least partly attributable to immunodysregulation resulting from lack of exposure to microorganisms that were tasked by co-evolutionary processes with establishing the 'normal' background levels of immunoregulation, a role that they perform in concert with the normal microbiota. This is an example of 'evolved dependence'. The relevant organisms co-evolved with ma

Most of the research on reproduction in those at risk for Huntington Disease (HD) has focused on the impact of genetic testing on reproductive decision-making. The main goal has been to determine whether discovering one is a carrier of the HD mutation changes an individual's or couple's decision to start a family or to have more children. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine reproductive decision-making in a sample of individuals at risk for HD who have chosen not to pursue genetic testing. PHAROS (Prospective Huntington At Risk Observational Study) is a multi-site study that a

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contains a dynamic and complex mixture of proteins, which can reflect a physiological and pathological state of the central nervous system. In our present study, we show CSF protein patterns from patients with the two most frequent subtypes of sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) defined by the codon 129 genotype (MM, MV, and VV) and the protease-resistant form of prion protein (type 1 and type 2). The densitometric analysis of 2D gels showed up-regulation of 27 and down-regulation of 3 proteins in the MM-sCJD as well as the up-regulation of 24 proteins in the VV

The cellular and molecular events of periodontal healing are coordinated and regulated by an elaborate system of signaling molecules, pointing to a primary strategy for functional periodontal compartment regeneration to replicate components of the natural cellular microenvironment by providing an artificial extracellular matrix (ECM) and by delivering growth factors. However, even with optimal carriers, the localized delivery of growth factors often requires a large amount of protein to stimulate significant effects in vivo, which increases the risk and unwanted side effects. A simple and rela

Bovine spinal dysmyelination (BSD) is a recessive congenital neurodegenerative disease in cattle (Bos taurus) characterized by pathological changes of the myelin sheaths in the spinal cord. The occurrence of BSD is a longstanding problem in the American Brown Swiss (ABS) breed and in several European cattle breeds upgraded with ABS. Here, we show that the disease locus on bovine chromosome 11 harbors the SPAST gene that, when mutated, is responsible for the human disorder hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). Initially, SPAST encoding Spastin was considered a less likely candidate gene for BSD

BACKGROUND: Due to the disproportionate numbers of African American women affected with early onset breast cancer, we sought to investigate mutation frequency of BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA1/2) in a sample of African American women, recruited through a variety of methods.
METHODS: We conducted a study investigating BRCA1/2 among 51 African American breast cancer patients with a personal or family history suggestive of hereditary predisposition to breast cancer. All individuals underwent genetic counseling and BRCA1/2 mutation analysis, through protein-truncation test on exon 11 of BRCA1 and exons 1

Vaccination is one of the most efficient ways to eradicate some infectious diseases in humans and animals. The material traditionally used as vaccines is attenuated or inactivated pathogens. This approach is sometimes limited by the fact that the material for vaccination is not efficient, not available, or generating deleterious side effects. A possible theoretical alternative is the use of recombinant proteins from the pathogens. This implies that the proteins having the capacity to vaccinate have been identified and that they can be produced in sufficient quantity at a low cost. Genetically

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Specific mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene can lead to an attenuated form of familial adenomatous polyposis (AFAP). Although AFAP mutation carriers have a 69% risk of colorectal cancer by age 80, clinical recognition remains a challenge in some cases because they present with few colonic adenomas and are difficult to distinguish clinically from patients with sporadic polyps.
METHODS: Family relationships were established using family history reports, the Utah Population Database, and the public records of the Mormon Church. Genetic analysis of represent

Ca2+ -dependent inactivation (CDI) has recently been shown in heterologously expressed N-type calcium channels (CaV2.2), but CDI has been inconsistently observed in native N-current. We examined the effect of Ca2+ on N-channel inactivation in rat sympathetic neurons to determine the role of CDI on mammalian N-channels. N-current inactivated with fast (tau approximately 150 ms) and slow (tau approximately 3 s) components in Ba2+. Ca2+ differentially affected these components by accelerating the slow component (slow inactivation) and enhancing the amplitude of the fast component (fast inactivati

BDNF is a functional candidate gene for AD, owing to its role in neuronal development and survival. The Val66Met (G196A), along with another C270T polymorphism has been associated with AD, however, the effects seem to be inconsistent across studies. We examined the association of the G196A and C270T polymorphisms with sporadic late-onset AD (LOAD) in a large American White cohort of 995 AD cases and 671 controls and an American Black cohort of 64 AD cases and 45 controls. We also examined the association of these polymorphisms with quantitative measures of AD progression, including age at onse

Menstrual toxic shock syndrome (mTSS) is thought to be associated with colonization with toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1)-producing Staphylococcus aureus in women with insufficient antibody titers. mTSS has been associated with menstruation and tampon use, and although it is rare, the effects can be life threatening. It remains of interest because of the widespread use of tampons, reported to be about 70% of women in the United States, Canada, and much of Western Europe. This comprehensive study was designed to determine S. aureus colonization and TSST-1 serum antibody titers in 3,012 men

Phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) deficiency is caused by mutations in the PAH gene (12q22-q24) resulting in a primary deficiency of the PAH enzyme activity, intolerance to the dietary intake of phenylalanine (Phe) and production of the phenylketonuria (PKU) disease. To date there have been no reports on the molecular analysis of PKU in Iranian population. In this study, the states of the PKU disease in terms of prevalence and mutation spectrum among patients reside in the institutions for mentally retarded in Isfahan was investigated. In the first step, 611 out of 1541 patients with PKU phenoty

During pregnancy there are hemostatic changes that result in a hypercoagulable state and can have thrombotic consequences. This condition can be aggravated in women who are carriers of congenital thrombophilic factors. This thrombotic tendency can manifest as thrombotic lesions in the placenta with compromise of utero-placental circulation, which are common characteristics present in obstetric complications, such as preeclampsia/eclampsia, miscarriage, fetal loss, intrauterine growth retardation, and abruptio placentae. In this paper we review data concerning about the association of congenita
