Cornu aspersum mucin attenuates indomethacins-induced gastric ulcers in mice via alleviating oxidative stress and inflammation.

In the past three decades, a significant progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers. The incidence of the dise … nducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) immunostaining. It also increased the gastric mucosal GSH and catalase contents as well as hemoxygenase-1 (HO-1) and nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) expressions with regressions in gastric mucosal lesions. In conclusion, C. aspersum mucin could be a potential therapeutic candidate to protect against …

Antioxidant and photoprotective role of latex C-serum from Hevea brasiliensis during 15-week UVB irradiation in male hairless SKH-1 mice.

It is known that UVB radiation induces several adverse skin alterations starting from simple photoaging to skin cancer. In addition, it was … proliferation. Latex C-serum protected the skin of mice against oxidative stress damage, increasing catalase (CAT) activity, regenerating glutathione (GSH) levels, lowering thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARS) production and regenerating the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the skin. Evidence that UV radiation in skin induced systemic alteration …

Protein vs. Energy Restriction Impact on Rat Testis' Function, Redox Status, and Histomorphometry.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of protein-restricted (PR) and energy restriction (ER) on male repro-ductive function. Eighteen wea … hione reductase activity reduced significantly in PR, and specifically in ER rat's testis, whereas, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities increased. Furthermore, the testis and epididymis examination revealed histological alterations in the PR and ER groups. In conclusion, ER and PR diets could reduce the oxidant markers, even though they may alter …

Description of Defluviimonas salinarum sp. nov. with the potential of benzene-degradation isolated from saltern in the Yellow Seacoast.

Strain CAU 1641T was isolated from saltern collected in Ganghwa Island, Republic of Korea. The bacterium was an aerobic, Gram-negative, catalase-positive, oxidase-positive, motile, and rod-shaped bacterium. Cell of strain CAU 1641T could grow at 20-40°C and pH 6.0-9.0 with 1.0-3.0% (w/v) NaCl. Stain CAU 1641T shared high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Defluviimonas aquaemixtae KCTC 42108T (98.0%), Defluviimonas denitrificans DSM 18921T (97.6%), and Defluviimonas aestuarii KACC 16442T (97.5%). Phylogenetic trees based on the 16S rRNA gene and the core-genome sequences indicated that s…

How a natural antibiotic uses oxidative stress to kill oxidant-resistant bacteria.

Natural products that possess antibiotic and antitumor qualities are often suspected of working through oxidative mechanisms. In this study, … ally, in vitro experiments revealed that streptonigrin was able to damage DNA without inhibition by catalase, indicating that hydrogen peroxide was not involved. We infer that streptonigrin can reduce bound oxygen directly to a ferryl species, which then oxidizes the adjacent DNA, without release of superoxide or hydrogen peroxide intermediates. This schem …

Further, higher enzymatic activity (superoxide dismutase and catalase) was observed in O. sancta. The antimicrobial potential against bacterial and fungal pathogens demonstrated better activity in O. sancta. In GC-MS analysis seven major chemical classes have been detected. Differential results was found in the two sp …
