Enhancing cognitive functions in aged dogs and cats: a systematic review of enriched diets and nutraceuticals.

With advancements in veterinary care and the growing recognition of pets as integral member of the family, the lifespans of dogs and cats have significantly increased, leading to a higher prevalence of age-related conditions, including cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS). CDS adversely impacts pets' quality of life and presents emotional and practical challenges for owners. Given its similarities to Alzheimer's disease in humans, CDS has gained attention as a target for nutrition-based interventions aimed at preserving cognitive function. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of enric…

Feline Farmhands: The Value of Working Cats to Australian Dairy Farmers-A Case for Tax Deductibility.

Rodents play a role in the spread of disease and cause immense damage to produce and infrastructure, leading to food safety risks and economic losses for farmers. Farmers typically control rodent populations using rodenticide baits, which are expensive, and, when used incorrectly, are inefficient, and pose a risk to children, pets and wildlife. Cats may offer a safer, more efficient and cheaper option for farmers, but concerns for cats' impact on wildlife and possible negative outcomes for their own welfare may lead to them being underutilized. Through semi-structured interviews with 15 people…

Gene therapy delivery of anti-Müllerian hormone in prepubertal female domestic cats induces long-term sterilization.

The uncontrolled reproduction of free-roaming domestic cats exacerbates their welfare challenges and the ecological pressure they exert on wildlife populations. Because of logistic and economic constraints, surgical sterilization alone cannot scale to control the reproduction of the hundreds of millions of intact cats worldwide. Herein, we report that the single administration of an adeno-associated viral vector delivering an anti-Müllerian hormone transgene to prepubertal cats can fully prevent pregnancy once females reach adulthood. Treated kittens were closely monitored for up to 21 months …

Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors: a pleiotropic drug in humans with promising results in cats.

Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disease in humans and cats. Cats share several features of human type-2 diabetes and can be considered an animal model for this disease. In the last decade, sodium-glucose transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have been used successfully as a class of hypoglycemic drug that inhibits the reabsorption of glucose from the renal proximal tubules, consequently managing hyperglycemia through glycosuria. Furthermore, SGLT2i have been shown to have cardiac, renal, and other protective effects in diabetic humans acting as a pleiotropic drug. Currently, at least six S…
