Systemic inflammation linking chronic periodontitis to cognitive decline.

Persistent inflammation in the systemic immune system can impose detrimental effects on the central nervous system (CNS). Neuroinflammation might be a result of this to accelerate the progressive deterioration of neuronal functions during aging. In this regard, controlling inflammation through delaying and/or preventing chronic inflammatory diseases may be a potential strategy to prevent or modify the progression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the oral cavity that is common among the elderly, especially for those who have decline in cognitive fu

The Association of Cognitive Impairment with Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis.

Background:Research on the association between cognitive impairment (CI) and peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis is limited. Therefore, we investigated whether CI contributed to the risk of PD-related peritonitis. Methods:This prospective cohort study enrolled 458 patients from 5 PD centers between 1 March 2013, and 30 November 2013, and continued until 31 May 2016. We used the Modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MS) to assess general cognition, the Trail-Making Test to assess executive function, and subtests of the Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status to assess…

Reproductive history and risk of cognitive impairment in Japanese women.

OBJECTIVE: While exposure to endogenous estrogen may be associated with better cognitive performance, it is still unclear whether it has an association with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. The aim of this study was to clarify the effects of reproductive history, as a surrogate marker of exposure to endogenous estrogen, on the risk of cognitive impairment (MCI or dementia) in women. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 747 women aged 40-59 years in the Saku area (Nagano Prefecture) were followed as part of the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective (JPHC) Study, which started in 1990. Everyday cognitive failure in patients suffering from neurosarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive failure is associated with memory and concentration problems. Previously, a prevalence of one third was found in a general sarcoidosis population. The aim of this study was to assess if neurosarcoidosis patients are at higher risk for developing everyday cognitive failure using the Cognitive Failure Questionnaire (CFQ) and to determine what factors were associated with cognitive failure. METHODS: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted from April to May 2017 in a national sample of neurosarcoidosis patients. The survey asked about complaints and included 3 quest

Rate of Cognitive Decline in Alzheimer's Disease Stratified by Age.

BACKGROUND: There is only limited information available about the effect of age on course of cognitive decline in patients with onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) over the age of 64 years. OBJECTIVE: We compared the rate of, and factors affecting, cognitive decline in patients with AD aged < 65 years (young-onset AD), 65-74 years (middle-onset AD), and ≥75 years (late-onset AD). METHOD: The study used longitudinal data from the Essex Memory Clinic which included a total of 305 participants; 56 had YOAD, 73 had MOAD, and 176 had LOAD. The rate of cognitive decline was measured using scores fro

Cognitive function and neuropathological outcomes: a forward-looking approach.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of Alzheimer's disease-related neuropathology burden at autopsy given older adults' current cognitive state. METHOD: Participants included 1,303 individuals who enrolled in the Religious Orders Study (ROS) and 1,789 who enrolled in the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP). Cognitive status was evaluated via standardized assessments of global cognition and episodic memory. At the time of analyses, about 50% of participants were deceased with the remaining numbers right censored. Using multi-state Cox proportional hazard models, we compared the cognitive status of…

Metabolic Syndrome and Cognitive Trajectories in the Framingham Offspring Study.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been linked to increased risk of developing cognitive impairment and dementia including Alzheimer's disease. I … ine were more likely to have MetS. The pattern of results showed that associations between MetS and cognition varied, depending upon whether the sample was stratified by genetic and cognitive status and whether we considered cognitive performance as a continuous variable or examined categorical groupings. Given that mid-life MetS was associated with poorer …

Neuroanatomical correlates of trait gambling-related cognitive distortions.

Abundant evidence suggests that gambling-related cognitive distortions play a crucial role in disruptive gambling behavior. However, to date, there have been few efforts to address the neuroanatomical basis of inter-individual differences in trait gambling-related cognitive distortions. We applied voxel-based morphometry to explore the neuroanatomical correlates of trait gambling-related cognitive distortions by correlating regional gray matter volume with behavioral scores tested by the gambling attitudes and beliefs survey. The results show that individuals with a higher degree of gambling-r

The human imagination: the cognitive neuroscience of visual mental imagery.

Mental imagery can be advantageous, unnecessary and even clinically disruptive. With methodological constraints now overcome, research has shown that visual imagery involves a network of brain areas from the frontal cortex to sensory areas, overlapping with the default mode network, and can function much like a weak version of afferent perception. Imagery vividness and strength range from completely absent (aphantasia) to photo-like (hyperphantasia). Both the anatomy and function of the primary visual cortex are related to visual imagery. The use of imagery as a tool has been linked to many co

Iron Deficiency, Cognitive Functions, and Neurobehavioral Disorders in Children.

More than 25% of the world's population is affected by anemia, of which more than 50% suffers from iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Children below 7 years of age are the population group that is most vulnerable to iron deficiency. Iron is an essential element in brain metabolism. Iron deficiency can cause changes in neurotransmitter homeostasis, decrease myelin production, impair synaptogenesis, and decline the function of the basal ganglia. Therefore, IDA adversely affects cognitive functions and psychomotor development. Research has shown that iron deficiency is a frequent comorbidity in attent

The Cognitive Demands of Gait Retraining in Runners: An EEG Study.

High impact forces during running have been associated with tibial stress injuries. Previous research has demonstrated increasing step rate will decrease impact forces during running. However, no research has determined the cognitive demand of gait retraining. The primary purpose was to determine the cognitive demand and effectiveness of field-based gait retraining. We hypothesized that in-field gait retraining would alter running mechanics without increasing cognitive workload as measured by EEG following learning. Runners with a history of tibial injury completed a gait retraining protocol w

Associated factors for cognitive impairment in the rural highly elderly.

BACKGROUND: Among the symptoms commonly faced by an increasingly aged population, dementia, preceded by cognitive impairment, most threatens their quality of life. Dementia is a well-recognized burden, not only for individuals who face the disease and for their families, but also for entire nation. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to identify associated factors for cognitive impairment in a very elderly population via a screening study design in Sokcho, a rural area in South Korea. METHODS: Trained nurses screened patients from 75-84 years of age for dementia using the Mini-Mental State E

Genetic and Environmental Influences on Cognitive Abilities in Extreme Poverty.

To improve global human capital, an understanding of the interplay of endowment across the full range of socioeconomic status (SES) is needed. Relevant data, however, are absent in the nations with the most abject poverty (Tucker-Drob & Bates, 2016), where the lowest heritability and strong effects of SES are predicted. Here we report the first study of biopsychosocial gene-environment interaction in extreme poverty. In a sub-Saharan sample of early teenage twins (N = 3192), we observed substantial (~30-40%) genetic influence on cognitive abilities. Surprisingly, shared environmental influence

Fears and fear-related cognitions in children with selective mutism.

Selective mutism (SM) is classified under the category of anxiety disorders in DSM-5 [1], although concrete fears that underlie the condition are not specified contrary to all other anxiety disorders. Given the lack of studies systematically investigating fears in SM, content and frequency of concrete fears as well as related cognitions have remained unclear so far. One hundred and twenty-four participants [M = 13.25 years (SD = 3.24), range 8-18 years] with SM (n = 65), social phobia (SP n = 18) or with typical development (TD n = 51) took part in an online survey. Participants with SM (n = 6…

Role of hydrogen sulfide in cognitive deficits: Evidences and mechanisms.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous molecule and is endogenously produced in the brain by cystathionine beta-synthase, 3-mercaptopyruvate-sulfurtransferase, cysteine aminotransferase and cystathionine γ-lyase. Physiologically, H2S acts as a neuromodulator and regulates synaptic activity of neurons and glia to promote the development of long-term potentiation. A decrease in H2S levels in the brain and plasma has been directly correlated with the degree of severity of Alzheimer disease in patients. A large number of studies have shown a decrease in the H2S levels in experimental models of cognit
