Adapting DIALOG+ in a School Setting-A Tool to Support Well-being and Resilience in Adolescents Living in Postconflict Areas During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Protocol for a Cluster Randomized Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Colombia has a long history of an armed conflict that has severely affected communities with forced internal displacement and violence. Victims of violence and armed conflicts have higher rates of mental health disorders, and children and adolescents are particularly affected. However, the mental health needs of this population are often overlooked, especially in low- and middle-Income countries, where scarcity of resources exacerbates the problem that has been further compounded by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, special attention should be paid to the development of intervent

Experience of care of hospitalized newborns and young children and their parents: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Several global initiatives put parent involvement at the forefront of enabling children's well-being and development and to promote quality of care for newborns and hospitalized young children aged 0-24 months. Scanty evidence on mistreatment such as delays or neglect and poor pain management among newborns exists, with even less exploring the experience of their parents and their hospitalized young children. To address this gap, authors reviewed research on experience of care for hospitalized young children and their parents, and potential interventions that may promote positive

Infant Botulism.

AUDIENCE: Emergency medicine and pediatric residents, and pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellows. INTRODUCTION: Botulism is a rare but serious cause of infant hypotonia, vomiting, and respiratory failure. The differential diagnosis and management of a hypotonic infant with progressive weakness leading to respiratory failure is a rare presentation with high morbidity and mortality.1 Infants with botulism generally present with vague complaints that progressively worsen over time.2 Recognition of descending paralysis in an infant as well as signs of respiratory failure are key to preventing

Assistive technology use and unmet need in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Around the world, variations and inequities in access to assistive technology (AT) are evident. Development of legislation, policies, and programmes has not kept pace with the increasing demand for AT. Therefore, context-specific needs assessment is required, which can assist in anticipating the accessibility and human support needs of individuals with impairments, and in turn, inform resource allocation and prioritisation of services. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to describe the current use and unmet needs of AT use in community-dwelling Canadians experiencing act

Implementation and modeling of a Regional Hub Reception Center during mass evacuation operations.

When developing response plans in the aftermath of a catastrophic incident, jurisdictions often fail to conduct the necessary interdisciplinary planning needed to fully address the needs across jurisdictional borders. The Purdue Homeland Security Institute (PHSI) was selected by the City of Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) in 2010 to lead an effort to address planning across jurisdictional borders during mass evacuations following a catastrophic incident. Specifically, PHSI was chosen to lead the effort in developing a planning and implementation guide for stand

Southeast Asian perspectives on nutrition needs for the new millennium.

Over the last three decades, there has been significant changes in the lifestyles of commmunities, including food habits, and food purchasing and consumption patterns in the Southeast Asian region. As a result, there is a definite change in the food and nutrition issues in the region. Nutritional deficiencies in many of these countries are slowly being decreased in magnitude. On the other hand, the significant proportions of the population are now faced with the other facet of the malnutrition problem, namely diet-related chronic diseases. However, because of the different stages of socio-econ

Integrating Behavioral Interventions into the Routine Immunization System in Chad: Implementation Lessons from a Fragile Setting.

Despite global progress, COVID-19 pandemic disruptions increased immunization inequities, particularly in fragile contexts like Chad. In 2022-2023, Chad reported 124,544 zero-dose children, in addition to 122,935 children who were classified as under-vaccinated. Low immunization uptake reflects persistent barriers related to access, knowledge, misinformation, and hesitancy. Behavioral interventions, adapted to low-resource settings, can help address these challenges. Anchored in the WHO Behavioral and Social Drivers (BeSD) framework and aligned with the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030), we de

Community-led organisations' impact on health and well-being in disadvantaged areas in the UK: evidence from the CommonHealth Assets longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Community-led organisations (CLOs) are place-based, community governed entities that aim to enhance health and well-being in disadvantaged communities using asset-based approaches. Currently the relationship between CLO participation and health and well-being outcomes is unclear. METHODS: A prospective, longitudinal survey was designed as part of a multimethod, realist study: CommonHealth Assets. Questionnaires at baseline, 1, 6 and 12 months assessed capability, health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), mental well-being, social connectedness and CLO attendance patterns (n=316 adu

Small-sized biodegradable PLA microplastics inhibit plant nitrogen uptake by reshaping soil microbial communities and stimulating microbial metabolism.

The effects of microplastics (MPs) varying in polymer type and size on soil microbial community composition, metabolic functions, and nutrient cycling remain insufficiently understood. Here, we conducted a pot experiment using MPs differing in polymer type (non-biodegradable polyethylene [PE], and biodegradable polylactic acid [PLA]) and four particle sizes (1200-1400, 600-700, 120-150, and 25-38 μm), with amplicon sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, and nitrogen-15 (15N) tracing model. Our results showed that small-sized PLA-MPs (25-38 μm) reduced bacterial diversity, destabilized microbial net

PEEC: The Protected Entities Ethics Checklist for Collecting Speech Data From Vulnerable Clinical Populations.

PURPOSE: The rapid advancement of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and natural language processing technologies has created significant opportunities for clinical applications within speech and language disorders, yet these capabilities remain largely confined to high-resource languages and populations. As research communities work to address these inequities through inclusive speech data collection, the intersection of clinical vulnerability, linguistic diversity, and emerging speech and language technologies creates ethical considerations that are rarely addressed by existing guidelines. The power of the social: A systematic review and meta-analysis of social interventions in Global Mental Health.

Recent scholarship has emphasised the importance of social interventions in mental health, broadly defined as interventions designed to deliver social benefits that drive positive mental health consequences to their beneficiaries. While more is understood about the impact of some types (i.e., social-relational interventions) globally, impacts of social interventions addressing broader systemic and material conditions linked to mental health, such as poverty and access to welfare systems, are less understood. Addressing this evidence gap is critical for advancing a holistic agenda in the global

How can complex interventions be adapted to context? A qualitative analysis of the implementation of DREAMS in three Kenyan settings.

In Kenya, the DREAMS Partnership ("Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored and Safe") aims to reduce new HIV cases among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW; aged 10-24) through a comprehensive programme of interventions. The impact of DREAMS varies across settings but reasons for this are not well understood. One potential reason is the differential implementation of DREAMS interventions due to on-the-ground adaptations made by implementers. We sought to understand if, how, and why DREAMS delivery was adapted in three Kenyan settings, so that complex interventions like DREAMS

General anesthesia for cesarean delivery: a single-center sequential mixed methods study on labor nurses', obstetricians' and anesthesiologists' knowledge, attitudes and practices.

BACKGROUND: Neuraxial anesthesia is preferred for cesarean deliveries, yet general anesthesia use remains notably high in certain locations. We aimed to quantify general anesthesia use for cesarean delivery and explore obstetric unit provider perspectives on contributing factors. METHODS: We conducted a single-center explanatory sequential mixed-methods study at a quaternary referral academic center. Cesarean deliveries from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, were identified from the institutional Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) database. Primary outcome was rate of general anest

Factors affecting representativeness in home-based dementia activity interventions: a literature review.

Most persons living with dementia (PLwD) reside in community settings, which has driven the development of a wide range of home-based activity interventions. However, the external validity of these studies remains uncertain because the representativeness of study samples is rarely reported. Assessing representativeness is essential for estimating intervention reach and informing health equity and resource allocation decisions. This review evaluates the extent to which participants in home-based activity trials reflect the population of community-dwelling PLwD and identifies sources of selectio

Implementation of a Specialty-Focused Musculoskeletal Service in a Medical Student-Run Free Clinic in Puerto Rico.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are a leading cause of pain, disability, and functional limitation worldwide and disproportionately affect underserved populations. Student-run free clinics frequently provide essential primary care services but often lack the specialty capacity needed to address MSK-related complaints. This study describes the implementation of a specialty-focused MSK clinic within a community-based student-run free clinic in Puerto Rico. A specialty-focused MSK clinic was implemented within an existing student-run free clinic in Puerto Rico from April 2025 through March 2026
