Arthropod-borne rickettsial pathogens are affecting both human and animal health. Due to the lack of studies on tick-borne rickettsiae in this region, the present study aimed to investigate the molecular identity of Rickettsia spp. in ticks in Northwestern Iran. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Ardabil Province from January to December 2024. A total of 700 ticks were collected from livestock. DNA was extracted from pooled ticks, and PCR assays targeting the gltA and 16S rRNA genes were performed to detect Rickettsia spp.; positive PCR products were sequenced for confirmation (Pishga

Strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, remains a neglected tropical disease (NTD) with significant clinical implications, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Current serological assays for diagnosing strongyloidiasis are limited by suboptimal sensitivity and specificity. The development of recombinant fusion proteins for serodiagnostic applications represents a promising strategy to improve diagnostic accuracy. This study aimed to design a novel recombinant fusion antigen for the serodiagnosis of strongyloidiasis, using immunoinformatics approaches. Four immunogenic

The global landscape of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) is shifting, driven by climate change, urbanisation and widespread habitat modification, requiring novel approaches to surveillance, prevention and control. To improve our capacity to respond to real-time emergent VBD threats, this study undertook cross-sectional sampling of suspected mosquito breeding sites in Greater Accra and Western Region, Ghana, to assess the operational feasibility of environmental DNA (eDNA) detection of major malaria vector species. eDNA deposited by wild, immature Anopheles gambiae s.l., isolated from a 50 mL water

OBJECTIVE: Lice are obligate ectoparasites divided into two main families: Pediculidae and Phthiridae. Body lice are known vectors of bacterial pathogens like Rickettsia, which cause diseases such as epidemic typhus and trench fever. Although head lice are genetically similar to body lice, they have long been considered a nuisance rather than a medical threat. This is particularly concerning for primary school girls, a vulnerable group with high infestation rates. This study aimed to detect deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from Coxiella, Rickettsia, and Anaplasma in head lice collected from female

Transfusion dependent thalassemia (TDT) patients require a regular blood transfusion to survive. Without adequate transfusion support, they suffer many complications, and have a short life span. Near about 200 milligrams of iron remains within a single Red cell concentrate (RCC) unit. So, blood transfusion acts as a double-edged sword, prolonging life while eventually leading to iron overload. For patients who are receiving transfusions for several years, iron accumulation causes different types of morbidity including thyroid failure. Though serum ferritin is a simple tool for measuring the ir

In hospitals, identification of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is important to reduce possible transmissions and serious outcomes. Traditional culture and susceptibility testing requires 48-72 h, whereas Xpert MRSA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) can provide accurate MRSA detection in <1 h. Unfortunately, the high cost of such commercial PCRs precludes their use in many laboratories. Using MRSA as a model, this study hypothesized that specimen pooling in a setting of low prevalence could reduce PCR costs and provide rapid results. A total of 424 sequential nasal/groin speci

Coccidiosis is a widespread, protozoan disease that continues to impose a high risk to the global poultry industry despite various control measures, including live, attenuated vaccines. To set the stage for next-generation vaccines that are broadly protective, our study aimed to identify sporozoite immunogens that are cross-reactive with hyper-immune sera against Eimeria maxima, E. tenella, E. necatrix and E.acervulina. In all, 2D electrophoresis, immunoblots and MALDI-TOF-MS/MS revealed 12 immunogenic proteins of interest, including 11 that have amino acid sequences matching those of non-redu

Candida auris has emerged as a major fungal pathogen responsible for persistent outbreaks, highlighting the importance of an effective screening strategy to control its spread in healthcare settings. Following a confirmed C. auris infection, we incorporated a specific qPCR assay into the screening process. Contact patients and environmental samples were screened weekly using culture and qPCR methods. We used these results to manage patients' cohorting, room disinfection, and new admissions in real time. The qPCR allowed us to identify 37 colonized patients and detect 47 contaminated environmen

Hantaviruses are zoonotic pathogens that are spread by rodents and can cause severe and fatal disease in humans. "New World" hantaviruses (endemic to North and South America) include the human pathogenic Andes orthohantavirus (ANDV), Choclo orthohantavirus (CHOV), and Sin Nombre orthohantavirus (SNV). Human infections can lead to hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), which is associated with ∼40% mortality. Currently, there are no FDA-approved hantavirus vaccines or treatments, but neutralizing antibodies targeting the glycoproteins Gn and Gc have been shown to be protective in animals.

BACKGROUND: Toxocariasis is caused by infection with Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati, common nematodes of canids and felids, respectively. Humans become infected after the accidental ingestion of embryonated eggs of Toxocara from the soil or the consumption of raw and undercooked meat containing Toxocara larvae. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to identify ascarid nematodes isolated from jackals in Guilan and Mazandaran provinces, based on morphological and molecular approaches.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 41 road-killed golden jackals collected from Guilan

INTRODUCTION: The production of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) is a key pathomechanism related to the complications of diabetes mellitus. The measurement of HbA1c as one of the AGEs is widely used in the clinic, but also other proteins undergo glycation in the course of diabetes. Here, we measure skin AGEs (SAGEs) in patients with diabetes type 1 (DM1) and type 2 (DM2) and correlate them with metabolic markers as well as non-invasively measured liver fibrosis and steatosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 64 patients with either DM1 or DM2 and 28 health

Approximately 10% of the population reports being allergic to penicillin, although usually less than 1% really are. In addition, people with proven allergies over the years may no longer be allergic. Unconfirmed penicillin allergy and use of alternative antimicrobials result in more treatment failures; more severe adverse effects. Higher cost; longer hospitalizations; increase in the emergence of multi-resistant germs associated with health care. The risk of cross-allergy between β-lactam groups is usually <2%, depending on the similarity of the side chains, so prescribing antibiotics from ano

INTRODUCTION: Diving utilising closed circuit pure oxygen rebreather systems has become popular in professional settings. One of the hazards the oxygen diver faces is central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT), causing potentially fatal convulsions. At the same time, divers frequently travel by boat, often suffering seasickness. The over-the-counter medication meclizine is an anticholinergic and antihistaminergic agent that has gained popularity in the treatment of seasickness. Reports have shown the inhibitory effect that acetylcholine has on glutamate, a main component in the mechanism

INTRODUCTION: National Blood Transfusion Services have done a commendable job in reducing transfusion-related fatalities from viruses, syphilis, and malaria through the vigilant screening of blood donors and donated blood. Bacterial contamination of blood products remains the commonest cause of transfusion-associated fatalities, but it remains unaddressed in resource-limited countries. Up-to-date knowledge of the prevalence and causes of bacterial contamination of blood products is necessary to ensure safe blood transfusion. This study investigated the rate and spectrum of bacterial contaminan

Infectious diseases are increasingly introduced into Switzerland due to the increased travel activity in recent decades and the import of dogs. Dirofilariasis, caused by Dirofilaria immitis or D. repens, is one of them. An infection with D. repens, the cause of canine subcutaneous dirofilariosis, is often asymptomatic in dogs, but represents a potential zoonotic disease risk for humans. Due to the rapidly increasing number of human cases, D. repens is considered an emerging zoonosis in north-eastern Europe. The prevalence of D. repens infections in dogs and humans in Switzerland is unknown. Si

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus A (RVA) infections remain a major cause of severe acute diarrhea affecting children worldwide. To date, rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) are widely used to detect RVA. However, paediatricians question whether the RDT can still detect the virus accurately. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of the rapid rotavirus test in comparison to the one-step RT-qPCR method.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lambaréné, Gabon, from April 2018 to November 2019. Stool samples were collected from children under 5 years of age with diarrhoea or a history o

Serum albumin (SA) is the most prevalent protein found in blood. Human albumin was used as an albumin substitute in hypoalbuminemia pets due to high sequence similarity. SAs from furry animals were also reported to be the major indoor allergens. Sensitizing to one of SAs coupled with high sequence identity can lead to cross-reactive antibodies in allergic individuals. Thus, understanding the structural and dynamic characters of SAs is crucial for not only albumin substitution but also allergen therapy. Herein, Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to elucidate the structural and d
