The activity of a neurospecific enzyme of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in monomolecular films formed onto solid surface was studied. The data obtained show that the formation of two-dimensional films onto negative-charge surfaces by the Langmuir-Schafer technology does not lead to the inactivation of the enzyme. Neuroleptic trifluoperazine increased the activity of TH. Monomolecular films of TH may be used as a sensitive element of biosensors for primary monitoring of neuroleptic-like compounds.

A number of plumgagin homologues (2-alkyl-1,4-naphthoquinones) and their 3-methyl derivatives are synthesized to enhance the inhibition of the prostaglandin synthetase (PGS)-activity by the natural compound plumbagin and to minimize its toxicity. The inhibition of the enzyme activity by the new naphthoquinones is only weak but their naphthol precursors are strong PGS-inhibitors. The mechanism of this enzyme interaction by the lipophilic naphthol derivatives is discussed in context with their singlet oxygen (1O2) reactive properties.

The role of Lck in IL-2-induced proliferation and cell survival is still controversial. Here, we show that the Src family kinase inhibitor, PP1, reduced the IL-2-induced proliferation of human T cells significantly without inhibiting the anti-apoptotic effect of IL-2. As Lck is the only Src family kinase activated upon IL-2 stimulation in T cells, this indicates that Lck is involved in IL-2-induced proliferation but not survival. The inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is the first step in checking whether new compounds can be considered as drugs for treating neurodegenerative diseases. The effect of viologen-phosphorus dendrimers on AChE and BChE activities was studied. The results show that the effects on the cholinesterase activities depend on dendrimer type and size. Viologen dendrimers can interact with the enzymes in two ways: they can bind either to a peripheral site of the enzyme or to amino acids located near the active site, inhibiting catalysis by both cholinesterases.

Psychoactive drugs like chlorpromazine (CPZ), imipramine, lithium and amphetamine in one way or another affect behaviour.
