Brucella optic neuritis.

A 13-year-old girl sustained acute blindness of the left eye with bilateral papilledema. An extensive search for a cause revealed only acute Brucella infection, documented by blood cultures that were positive for Brucella and a rise and fall of Brucella agglutination titer. Computed tomographic scan of the orbit revealed thickening and irregularity of the optic nerve. The patient was treated with anti-Brucella therapy and high-dose corticosteroids, with resultant complete recovery and return of visual acuity, disappearance of papilledema, and return of the optic nerve to its normal shape and t

Cytomegalovirus retinitis in an infant with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

A case of cytomegalovirus retinitis in an infant with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is described. Although well recognized as an ocular manifestation of AIDS in adults, only one case of the necrotic retinitis caused by cytomegalovirus has been described in a child with AIDS. Intravenous treatment with ganciclovir resulted in substantial ocular improvement, despite the advanced nature of the disease in one eye in which there was also secondary neovascular glaucoma. Home maintenance treatment was used via Broviac catheter. The patient later died following pulmonary infection with Pne

[Lymphographic and morphological studies of the conjunctiva in onchocerciasis patients in Liberia].

Conjunctival lymphographies in patients infected with Onchocerca volvulus in Liberia showed normal or only slightly dilated lymphatics. The light-microscopical studies of conjunctival specimens revealed microfilariae predominantly in edematous dilated interstitial channels. Microfilariae in lymphatics and interstitial channels without endothelium of the conjunctivae were demonstrated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. No signs of inflammatory cellular reaction were found in the vicinity of the parasites. In conclusion, the dilatation of lymphatics and interstitial channels as we

Orbital Abscess Complicating Allergic Fungal Rhinosinusitis Due to Streptococcus halichoeri: A Rare Zoonotic Sinonasal Infection.

BACKGROUND: Secondary bacterial infections complicating allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) are uncommon but can be serious given the expansile nature of the disease which can thin and erode the bone separating the sinuses from the brain and orbits. Zoonotic pathogens are rarely implicated as pathogens. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old African American male with several years of progressive nasal obstruction, facial pressure, and hyposmia, presented emergently with acute left eye pain and swelling, diplopia, afferent pupillary defect and inferior visual field deficit. Computed tomography and magn

[Prevention of HIV infections in surgical gynecology and obstetrics].

In professionally conditioned HIV infections of medical personnel, blood has so far been the only source of infection that is of any importance. Hence, measures to prevent such infections must primarily aim at avoiding any contact with blood from HIV-infected patients. Since the HIV status of the patients and possibly alos other infections transmitted by blood (hepatitis) are often unknown, the following protective measures must be applied in all patients as a matter of routine. Fundamentally, gloves must always be worn when coming into contact with blood, body fluids, mucosa and non-intact sk

Clinical Characteristics and Evolution of Ocular Manifestations in Scrub Typhus.

Scrub typhus, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi infection, manifests with fever, rash, eschar, pneumonia, hepatosplenomegaly, and lymphadenopathy. We conducted a review of the ocular manifestations post-infection and found a high incidence (67%) during the recovery phase (2-4 weeks), particularly prevalent in the tropical Tsutsugamushi triangle. Despite China, only three cases of optic neuritis had been reported, suggesting its rarity due to early antibiotic administration, we present the first documented case of binocular optic neuroretinitis due to Orientia tsutsugamushi infection in China. Development and Validation of Chlamydia muridarum Mouse Models for Studying Genital Tract Infection Pathogenesis.

Animal infection models play significant roles in the study of bacterial pathogenic mechanisms and host-pathogen interactions, as well as in evaluating drug and vaccine efficacies. Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for infections in various mucosal tissues, including the eyes and urogenital, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts. Chronic infections can result in severe consequences such as trachoma-induced blindness, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. While intravaginal inoculation of C. muridarum mimics the natural route of sexual transmission between individuals, transcervical inocula

Pathogenesis of Experimental Infection of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) with Nucleospora Braziliensis Pathology and Proteomic of Microsporidia.

The recent discovery of disease caused by Nucleospora braziliensis in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is important as it has highlighted the high prevalence of infection and associated mortality in cultured fish. Thus, this study conducted an experimental infection of this microsporidium to evaluate pathological alterations and conduct proteomic analysis. For pathological observation, samples of brain, eyes, gall bladder, gut, heart, kidney, liver, muscle, skin, spleen, and stomach tissue, were collected, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was performed for proteomic a

Osteomyelitis of the Jaw in COVID-19 Patients: A Rare Condition With a High Risk for Severe Complications.

Osteomyelitis of the jaw is an uncommon infection that arises from the flora of the oral cavity or sinuses and affects immunocompromised and polymorbid patients. Treatment includes surgical debridement and long regiments of broad-spectrum antibiotics. We present three cases of complicated jaw osteomyelitis presented with concurrent COVID-19 infection, including only two reported cases of odontogenic COVID-related osteomyelitis. The two mandibular cases were patients in their 30s with no comorbidities. The first case was an asymptomatic COVID-19-positive patient who developed an odontogenic inf

Zika Virus: A Global Threat to Humanity: A Comprehensive Review and Current Developments.

At present, one of greatest concerns of medical personnel is Zika virus (ZIKV). Though it has been reported for quite a long time, its rapid emergence, new modes of transmission, and more importantly, the congenital anomalies associated with it have made the situation worse. It was first detected in 1947. After that, this infection was found in the countries of Africa as well as Asia. At present, interestingly it has been reported from Brazil. Microcephaly and intracranial calcification have been postulated to be related to maternal infection with this virus. Though it is asymptomatic in maxim

Case of human Dirofilaria repens infection manifested by cutaneous larva migrans syndrome.

Dirofilaria repens, parasite of subcutaneous tissues of dogs and other carnivores, represents high infection risk for animals and humans in Europe. In men, infection usually presents as nodule in subcutaneous tissues or, less often, the lesions are localised around the eyes. The work presents first confirmed clinical case of human D. repens infection connected with cutaneous larva migrans syndrome. In patient, the migration of the worm caused true signs of creeping eruption, elevated sinuous track under the skin. It was connected with severe pain, burning and erythema of adjacent skin. Symptom

Bartonella henselae infection inducing hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in a kidney transplant recipient.

Bartonella henselae (Bh) is the cause of cat-scratch fever. When infection is symptomatic, it typically presents with singular lymphadenitis and fever. Less commonly, the infection can become disseminated and cause endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and micro-abscesses in multiple sites including liver, spleen, eyes, and brain, especially in immunocompromised patients. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (Hlh) is a rare and severe multisystem disorder that may be triggered by infections. In one prior case, Bh, like other infections, has induced Hlh, an immune-mediated disease that can be characterize

Kingella kingae: an emerging cause of invasive infections in young children.

Kingella kingae, a fastidious hemolytic gram-negative bacillus once considered to be an exceptional cause of disease, has emerged in recent years as an important invasive pathogen in children. When synovial fluid and other exudates were inoculated into blood culture bottles, enhanced recovery of the organism was observed, and an annual incidence of invasive K. kingae infections of 27.4 per 100,000 children younger than age 24 months was demonstrated in southern Israel. Skeletal infections are the most common clinical presentation of K. kingae, and studies conducted in that region have shown th

Effects of UV-B on the resistance against infectious diseases.

It is known that ultraviolet-B light (UV-B) affects human health. In addition to deleterious effects on the skin and the eyes, such as erythema, photoageing, keratitis and cataract, UV-B is also able to impair the resistance against skin-associated tumours and infections. Our data implicate that UV-B can impair the resistance against certain non-skin-associated infections in rats, such as Listeria monocytogenes, Trichinella spiralis and Ratcytomegalovirus (RCMV). Rats, infected with T. spiralis, had an increased amount of T. spiralis larvae in their carcasses after UV-B exposure in comparison
