"The System is Overwhelming and Frustrating and Discouraging": Stress and Social Support for Affected Family Carers in an Unregulated Drug Crisis.

BACKGROUND: Family members and other affected carers are essential supports for the wellbeing of people who use drugs who are at risk of an overdose. This study explores the perspectives of family carers whose loved ones are at risk of overdose and/or who have lost a loved one to a past fatal overdose in the Fraser East region of British Columbia (BC). METHODS: In this qualitative study, we conducted reflexive thematic analysis of 22 interviews examining the experiences of family carers of loved ones who have experienced unwitnessed drug poisoning. Interviews were carried out between August 2

Quality of Life in Intensive Care Unit Survivors-Family Member Dyads: A Conceptual Framework and Longitudinal Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Critical illness threatens the Quality of Life (QoL) of both ICU survivors and their family members through Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) and its family counterpart (PICS-F). These syndromes unfold within the ICU survivor-family member dyad, yet their dyadic interdependence and joint trajectories remain insufficiently explored. AIM: To develop a conceptual framework and study protocol for a longitudinal investigation of dyadic QoL in ICU survivor-family member dyads, with explicit attention to reciprocal interdependence over time. DESIGN AND METHODS: A longitudinal study wi

Family Self-Care in the Context of Intellectual Disabilities: Insights from a Qualitative Study in Portugal.

Background/Objectives: Family self-care (FSC) is increasingly recognized as a vital aspect of caregiving in pediatric chronic conditions. However, its development in families of children with intellectual disabilities (IDs) remains underexplored. This study aimed to examine how families construct and sustain FSC, and to identify factors that shape its development across four domains: physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and behavioral. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using an abductive approach, combining inductive thematic analysis with a deductively applied theoretical framework. Se

From prenatal economic pressure to child problem behavior at age 6: An examination of the longitudinal family stress model and the role of social support in two-parent families.

The family stress model outlines that parents' economic pressure can lead to a cascade of family stress processes, which in turn can lead to child internalizing and externalizing behavior. In the current preregistered study, we investigated to what extent the relation between prenatal economic pressure and child internalizing and externalizing behavior at child age 6 can be explained through the sequential mediating processes of parents' psychological distress and harsh parenting at child age 3. In our models, we accounted for the influence of both mothers and fathers. We also tested the moder

The impact of family cancer history on tumor metabolism and prognosis in patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality, and the role of family cancer history in disease progression and treatment response remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the influence of family tumor history on disease-free survival, tumor metabolism, and treatment response in NSCLC patients. A retrospective, single-center study of 414 NSCLC patients was conducted, with 101 patients having a family history of cancer (FHC). Disease-free survival (DFS), tumor glucose metabolism assessed by 18F-FDG PET/CT, and treatment response to chemoradiother

Auditory Phenotype of a Novel Missense Variant in the CEACAM16 Gene in a Large Russian Family With Autosomal Dominant Nonsyndromic Hearing Loss.

Autosomal dominant hearing loss is represented by a large number of genetically determined forms. Over 50 genes associated with dominant nonsyndromic hearing impairments were described. Pathogenic variants in the CEACAM16 gene lead to the development of DFNA4B hearing loss. Currently, 8 pathogenic variants in this gene have been described. The objective of this study was to study the audiological and molecular genetic characteristics of a large family with CEACAM16-associated autosomal dominant nonsyndromic hearing loss. A detailed anamnesis was collected, and a comprehensive audiological exam

A pan-cancer analysis of the MAPK family gene and their association with prognosis, tumor microenvironment, and therapeutic targets.

The mitogen-activated protein kinases family of genes plays a crucial role in a wide range of inflammatory responses in the human body. The MAPK family of genes includes ERK, ERK5, JNK, P-38 mitogen-activated protein kinases. However, the correlation between MAPK family gene expression and pan-cancer prognosis, as well as the tumor microenvironment, has not been extensively studied. This study integrated multiple bioinformatics analysis methods to assess the expression and prognostic value of MAPK family genes, as well as their relationship with tumor microenvironment in patients with pan-canc

Exploring the Lived Experiences of Pain in Military Families: A Qualitative Examination.

Chronic pain in Canadian Veterans is twice that of the general population and the prevalence of their related mental health concerns is alarmingly high. This likely puts their children at an increased risk of developing pain and mental health problems that can pervasively impact daily life and persist into adulthood. Pain care and military culture of (acute and chronic) pain have been identified as a top priority of Canadian Veterans. This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the pain experiences of Canadian Armed Forces families. Thirty-five semi-structured qualitative interviews

Impact of hereditary pancreatitis on patients and their families.

Hereditary pancreatitis (HP), a highly penetrant (~80%) autosomal dominant disease associated with PRSS1 variants, causes acute pancreatitis in childhood and chronic pancreatitis by early adulthood. Other clinical features include pain, diabetes, and risk of pancreatic cancer. HP kindreds were prospectively recruited from 1995 to 2015. At enrollment, study participants completed medical and family history questionnaires, and provided samples for genotyping. Participants were recontacted between 2015 and 2017 and asked to complete a survey on concerns and experiences related to HP, PRSS1 testin

"I Felt Safe": The Role of the Rapid Rehousing Program in Supporting the Security of Families Experiencing Homelessness in Salt Lake County, Utah.

Homelessness is a public health issue that many organizations are addressing through a Housing First Model. One such organization is The Road Home (TRH), which provides services to homeless individuals and families in Salt Lake County. TRH is perhaps best known for their emergency shelters, but the organization also administers the Rapid Rehousing Program (RRHP), designed to help families experiencing homelessness transition back into stable housing. Those experiencing homelessness tend to have high rates of chronic mental/physical disabilities as well as issues related to substance abuse. Hav

NEK11 as a candidate high-penetrance melanoma susceptibility gene.

BACKGROUND: A proportion of patients diagnosed with cutaneous melanoma reports a positive family history. Inherited variants in CDKN2A and several other genes have been shown to predispose to melanoma; however, the genetic basis of familial melanoma remains unknown in most cases. The objective of this study was to provide insight into the genetic basis of familial melanoma. METHODS: In order to identify novel melanoma susceptibility genes, whole exome sequencing (WES) analysis was applied in a Dutch family with melanoma. The causality of a candidate variant was characterised by performing cos

Familial inheritance and screening of first-degree relatives in common variable immunodeficiency and immunoglobulin A deficiency patients.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) and immunoglobulin A deficiency (IgAD) are the most prevalent primary immunodeficiency disorders. High rates of familial inheritance have been described in CVID and IgAD, but it is unknown in different ethnic populations. We aimed to determine the prevalence of familial cases and whether they showed more severe clinical characteristics than sporadic ones in Turkish patients. A total of 40 CVID and 70 IgAD patients and their 251 first-degree relatives (FDRs) were evaluated. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were reviewed. A familial case was defi

Molecular phylogeny of Cyclophyllidea (Cestoda: Eucestoda): an in-silico analysis based on mtCOI gene.

Order Cyclophyllidea (of cestode platyhelminths) has a rich diversity of parasites and includes many families and species that are known to cause serious medical condition in humans and domestic and wild animals. Despite various attempts to resolve phylogenetic relationships at the inter-family level, uncertainty remains. In order to add resolution to the existing phylogeny of the order, we generated partial mtCO1 sequences for some commonly occurring cyclophyllidean cestodes and combined them with available sequences from GenBank. Phylogeny was inferred taking a total 83 representative specie

A family study of DRD3 rs6280, SLC1A2 rs3794087 and MAPT rs1052553 variants in essential tremor.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Despite many data suggesting a role of genetic factors in the risk for essential tremor (ET), the responsible genes have not been identified. We analyzed in ET Spanish families three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs): DRD3 rs6280, SLC1A2 rs3794087, and MAPT rs1052553) previously related to an increased risk for developing the disease. METHODS: We recruited 45 subjects with ET and 13 subjects without tremor belonging to 11 families who were evaluated because of familial tremor. Diagnosis of probable or definite ET was done according to TRIG criteria. Genotyping of th
