Hyperosmotic sisomicin infusion: a mouse model for hearing loss.

Losing either type of cochlear sensory hair cells leads to hearing impairment. Inner hair cells act as primary mechanoelectrical transducers, while outer hair cells enhance sound-induced vibrations within the organ of Corti. Established inner ear damage models, such as systemic administration of ototoxic aminoglycosides, yield inconsistent and variable hair cell death in mice. Overcoming this limitation, we developed a method involving surgical delivery of a hyperosmotic sisomicin solution into the posterior semicircular canal of adult mice. This procedure induced rapid and synchronous apoptot…

Therapeutic potential of neurotrophins for treatment of hearing loss.

Degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and hair cells in the cochlea induced by aging, injury, ototoxic drugs, acoustic trauma, and various diseases is the major cause of hearing loss. Discovery of growth factors that can either prevent SGN and hair-cell death or stimulate hair-cell regeneration would be of great interest. Studies over the past several years have provided evidence that specific neurotrophins are potent survival factors for SGNs and protect these neurons from ototoxic drugs in vitro and in vivo. Current research focuses more on understanding the mechanism of hair-cell r…

[Prepubertal hypertrichosis].

Hypertrichosis must be assessed in the light of the type of hair involved, the pattern of abnormal hair growth, associated abnormalities, age of onset, and family history including ethnic background. Associated diseases and the associated medication must be considered, as drug-induced hair growth is not uncommon. Although disorders of the hair usually have little medical significance and involve no interference with the general physical condition, they may be present in congenital syndromes or be associated with other abnormalities and metabolic disorders. The individual psychological impact o…

Case-control study in a subtropical Australian population to assess the relation between non-melanoma skin cancer and epidermodysplasia verruciformis human papillomavirus DNA in plucked eyebrow hairs. The Nambour Skin Cancer Prevention Study Group.

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis human papillomavirus (EV-HPV) DNA has been demonstrated in malignant and benign skin lesions and in hairs plucked from renal transplant recipients and immunocompetent patients. We investigated the association between EV-HPV DNA in hairs plucked from eyebrows and the occurrence of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in a community-based study. Within a cohort of residents of a Queensland township (Nambour), nested case-control studies of recently developed NMSC (64 cases), basal-cell carcinoma (BCC) (51 cases) and squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) (25 cases) were conduct…

Therapeutic effect of Nepenthes kampotiana Lecomte ethanol extract (Nk-EE) on androgenic alopecia through the inhibition of apoptosis and 5α-reductase activity.

There is increasing interest in hair loss treatment because a growing number of people affected. Nepenthes kampotiana Lecomte is known for its anticancer effects, but its potential for preventing hair loss has not been researched. Therefore, this study focused on the hair loss prevention effects of N. kampotiana Lecomte ethanol extract (Nk-EE). The results showed that Nk-EE had a proliferative effect on human follicle dermal papilla cells and inhibited cell death. In vivo experiments using androgenic areata models showed that Nk-EE had a positive effect on a variety of biomarkers such as hair-…

Laser Treatment in Hirsutism: An Update.

Unwanted hair growth, which is a common aesthetic problem, has traditionally been treated using various techniques such as shaving, waxing, and epilation, but most of these provide only a temporary solution. Laser and light-based technology for hair removal has become one of the fastest growing procedures in modern cosmetic dermatology in the last decade. Clinical experience suggests that in the ideal subject with fair skin and dark hair, laser treatment can reduce hair growth significantly. This article reviews the various laser and light-based devices used for hair removal along with the var…

Epidemiological studies on head lice infestation in Israel. I. Parasitological examination of children.

Of 3,079 children in a medium-sized community near Jerusalem, 11.2% were found to be infested with living lice and eggs and another 23.4% had only nits. Boys and girls were equally infested. The incidence of infestation was highest among children 4-11 years of age. About 78% of the infested children had from one to ten lice. Approximately 80% of the infested children had nits that were 2-5 cm away from the scalp. Boys with medium length hair and girls with short hair showed the highest incidence of lice infestation. Children with brown and red hair were more infested than those with black and …

'The psychosocial burden of alopecia areata and androgenetica': a cross-sectional multicentre study among dermatological out-patients in 13 European countries.

BACKGROUND: Hair diseases play an important burden on patients' lives, causing significant emotional and psychosocial distress. However, the impairment due to different hair conditions, such as alopecia areata (AA) and androgenetic alopecia (AGA), has rarely been compared. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the psychological burden of subgroups of patients with different hair diseases and to compare them to a healthy population. METHODS: In this study, we analysed a subgroup of patients with hair diseases from patients of a large multicentre study including 3635 dermatological pa…

Acute onset traction-associated ulceration and alopecia.

Traction alopecia is a protracted form of hair loss resulting from persistent tension on the hair follicle . We report a case of a 9-year-old African American girl who presented with extensive scalp ulceration and alopecia 11 days after placement of a synthetic hair braid. Over a period of months, with consistent wound care and low-tension hairstyling, most of the hair regrew. We propose that the ulceration and hair loss in this case represents an acute variant of traction alopecia due to pressure-induced ischemia and necrosis.

Localized trichorrhexis nodosa.

Trichorrhexis nodosa is a disorder of the hair shaft in which there is a distinctive response to injury. The hair is fragile and on examination regularly spaced pale 'node-like' swellings may be observed. It may affect normal hair following excessive or repeated trauma, or may occur after minimal trauma if there is an inherent defect in keratin synthesis causing abnormally brittle hair. The diagnosis can be readily made clinically and confirmed microscopically. Treatment is aimed at reducing trauma. We describe a case of localized trichorrhexis nodosa in a patient with otherwise apparently nor…

The vestibular epithelia in experimental hydrops.

Morpho-pathological features, observed by scanning electron microscopy, in guinea pigs with endolymphatic hydrops of 4-14 months included shortening of the hair cell tufts, loss of tufts, retraction of sensory hair cells away from the surrounding tissue and hair cell loss. After 22 months of hydrops, there was complete loss of hair cells with indifferentiation of the epithelium. The loss of ciliary tufts involved loss of both stereocilia and kinocilia identified as short stubs and holes respectively. Control macular epithelia showed no hair tuft loss although ampullae in control ears could sho…

Trichotillomania: symptom or syndrome? A need for revision.

A 40-year-old religious Hindu male presented with his fourth episode of mania along with repetitive plucking of hair. This unusual behaviour was explained by him as a way to 'attain divinity by discarding the impure demoniac hair'. He had not shown this symptom in the previous episodes. With treatment of the mood disorder the hair plucking also disappeared. Hair removal has an important religious-cultural meaning in eastern India. Possible implication of the symptom is discussed. A case is made for reporting hair plucking as a symptom rather than a syndrome and it may at times represent a cult…

Morphological features of pilonidal cysts of the sacrococcygeal region.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the fact that the pilonidal cyst of the sacrococcygeal region is a long-known disease, the mechanism of accumulation or absence of hair in the cyst remains unclear, which affects the accuracy of the name of the disease, as well as understanding of its pathogenesis. AIM: Aim to perform morphological examination of pilonidal cysts of the sacrococcygeal region, to determine the nature of the cysts, the frequency of hair in the cyst cavity and to determine the causes and mechanism of its accumulation in cysts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A morphological study of skin areas with …

Randomized controlled trial on the efficacy and safety of the combination therapy of topical 0.1% finasteride - 5% Minoxidil in male androgenetic alopecia.

Current FDA-approved treatments for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) are oral finasteride and topical minoxidil. Topical finasteride offers a potential alternative with similar efficacy and fewer systemic side effects. This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of combining topical finasteride and minoxidil for male AGA. This 12-week randomized controlled trial divided subjects into two groups which are topical finasteride 0.1%-minoxidil 5% (treatment) and topical minoxidil 5% (control) (NCT05990400, registered 2023-08-04). Hair density, hair diameter, terminal hair rate, and vellus hair rat…

Favorable effect of herbal extract on androgenic alopecia: A case report.

RATIONALE: Androgenic alopecia (AGA) is a prevalent condition with progressive miniaturization of hair follicles. Currently, reliable treatments have remained limited, and complementary medications for AGA are still being investigated. Traditional Chinese medicine formulas have conspicuous advantages in the treatment of AGA with good development prospects. Zimmer aqueous spray (ZAS) is a water spray containing Zimmer herbal extract powder (ZMWP), which consists of Ligustri lucidi Fructus, Ecliptae Herba, Fallopia multiflora (Thunb.) Harald. and Polygonatum sibiricum Delar. ex Redoute, etc. ZMW…

Using Light-Sheet Microscopy to Study Spontaneous Activity in the Developing Lateral-Line System.

Hair cells are the sensory receptors in the auditory and vestibular systems of all vertebrates, and in the lateral-line system of aquatic vertebrates. The purpose of this work is to explore the zebrafish lateral-line system as a model to study and understand spontaneous activity in vivo. Our work applies genetically encoded calcium indicators along with light-sheet fluorescence microscopy to visualize spontaneous calcium activity in the developing lateral-line system. Consistent with our previous work, we show that spontaneous calcium activity is present in developing lateral-line hair cells. …

Role of Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) in Androgenetic Alopecia.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the commonest type of alopecia affecting over half of men and women. Only two drugs have been approved so far (minoxidil and finasteride), and hair transplant is the other treatment alternative. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been claimed to be a new safe devise-based modality for stimulating hair growth in men and women in AGA. Searches of PubMed and Google Scholar were carried out using keywords alopecia, hair loss, and LLLT. Fifteen studies were found to be strongly relevant and were analyzed. Studies have shown that LLLT stimulated hair growth in both men…

Alopecia areata is a T-lymphocyte mediated autoimmune disease: lesional human T-lymphocytes transfer alopecia areata to human skin grafts on SCID mice.

Much evidence suggests that alopecia areata is a tissue restricted autoimmune disease. Alopecia areata responds to immunosuppressive agents, and is associated with other tissue restricted autoimmune diseases, including autoimmune thyroiditis and vitiligo. Furthermore, hair regrows when involved scalp is transplanted to nude mice. This study was undertaken to determine whether alopecia areata is mediated by T lymphocytes. Involved scalp from alopecia areata patients was grafted onto SCID mice. Additional biopsies from lesional scalp of the same patients were used to isolate T lymphocytes. These…

Cutaneous factors related to the risk of malignant melanoma.

In a case-control study, 287 women with malignant melanoma were compared with 574 age-matched controls. Red hair colour at age 5 years was associated with a tripling of risk [relative risk (RR) = 3.0], blonde hair with a 60% increase (RR = 1.6) and fair skin with a doubling (RR = 2.1). Women with melanoma also reported that they tended to burn (RR = 1.4) and to freckle (RR = 1.9) after exposure to sunlight. Since fair skin, red hair, and the tendency to burn or freckle after exposure to sunlight all cluster in the same individuals, the extent to which each of these factors had an independent i…
