Exploring the social meaning of curing HIV: a qualitative study of people who inject drugs in Guangzhou, China.

Our objective was to explore the social meaning of HIV and perceptions of an HIV cure among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Guangzhou, China, which speaks to ethical and resource challenges to development in this field. We conducted a qualitative research study using in-depth interviews. We analyzed interview transcripts from 29 PWID, eight physicians, and three social workers from an outpatient HIV clinic and two methadone maintenance treatment centers. The social meaning of HIV infection and perceptions of an HIV cure reflected patients' relationships with society, health systems, and phys

Notification card to alert for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is stigmatizing from the patient's point of view.

BACKGROUND: The importance of alerting health care systems of patients carrying multidrug-resistant bacteria (MRB) is highlighted in numerous guidelines. In the absence of electronic alert systems, notification cards are often recommended, but have rarely been evaluated. We evaluated patient experiences of receiving and using a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) notification card. METHODS: Two cohorts of patients given a card when identified for the first time as a carrier in 1999-2003 and 2008-2010, responded to questionnaires distributed in 2004 and 2011, respectively. The r

Establishment of a viral hepatitis surveillance system--Pakistan, 2009-2011.

Hepatitis A is thought to infect almost all persons living in Pakistan by age 15 years, and hepatitis E is responsible for sporadic infections and outbreaks. The prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is estimated at 2.5% and the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, estimated at 4.8%, is one of the highest rates in the world. Hepatitis surveillance in Pakistan has been syndromic, failing to confirm infection, distinguish among viruses, or collect information on risk factors. To understand the epidemiology of viral hepatitis in Pakistan more clearly, the Ministry of Health

Trends in environmentally related childhood illnesses.

Tracking incidence or prevalence of diseases and using that information to target interventions is a well-established strategy for improving public health. The need to track environmentally mediated chronic diseases is increasingly recognized. Trends in childhood illnesses are 1 element of a framework for children's environmental health indicators, which also includes trends in contaminants in the environment and in concentrations of contaminants in bodies of children and their mothers. This article presents data on 3 groups of important childhood diseases or disorders that seem to be caused o

Treatment of oral and nonoral sources of halitosis in elderly patients.

The increasing number of older patients being seen in medical and dental offices in the industrialised world emphasises the need for a thorough understanding of the normal aging process. Additionally, close attention must be paid to the disease processes that affect this special needs population. Although there are many positive psychosocial issues associated with the aging patient, many diseases and disabilities associated with the aging process place an increased burden on the elderly patient. The relationship between general and oral health must be understood by the practitioner if therapie

HIV-positive patient with herpes zoster: a manifestation of the immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome.

Herpes zoster is a common illness that can lead to serious morbidity. There is now evidence that HIV-infected patients who have been treated with antiretroviral therapy are at greater risk of developing herpes zoster not when they are severely immunocompromised but, paradoxically, when their immune system is recovering. This is a manifestation of the immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome. The objectives of this report are to (1) inform health care providers that HIV-infected patients may develop multiple infectious, autoimmune, and oncological manifestations after treatment with antiretr

A Windows-based tool for the study of clinical decision-making.

Studies of health-provider decision-making, and of their practice patterns, play a central role in efforts to improve the quality and effectiveness of care and in decreasing costs of healthcare delivery systems. Researchers from a variety of disciplines have studied a broad range of clinical conditions, using a number of methodological approaches and measurement tools, including self-report, written clinical vignettes, simulated clinical encounters using actors as patients and analysis of medical records and administrative data. Although these provide information about the outcomes of clinical

Our Ways, Your Ways, Both Ways - a multi-disciplinary collaboration to develop, embed and evaluate a model of social and emotional wellbeing care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people who experience detention - Phase 1.

The National Strategic Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing identifies building a strong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led evidence-base to inform care as a key priority. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander adolescents in contact with the criminal justice system are a highly vulnerable group of Australians, with substantial unmet needs. There is limited evidence to inform culturally appropriate models of care that meet the social and emotional wellbeing needs of justice-involved Aboriginal and/or Torres Strai

Intimate partner violence: The identification and response practices of clinicians in rural emergency departments. A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major contributor to poor health outcomes, particularly for women in rural areas. Geographical and social isolation can impede access to support networks and limited availability of specialised services can further compound vulnerability. Within this context, rural emergency departments have become key access points for IPV support; presenting an opportunity to explore how identification and response are approached in these rural settings. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review synthesises current research on clinician IPV identification and response

Research Gaps and Priorities for aHUS in the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC): Findings from a Payer-Focused Expert Meeting.

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare, life-threatening complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) associated with high morbidity, mortality, and substantial healthcare resource utilization (HCRU). Although complement inhibitors such as eculizumab and ravulizumab have dramatically improved outcomes, aHUS continues to impose significant economic and operational burden on healthcare systems. In the Gulf region, payers and health systems face increasing pressures driven by rising costs, delayed diagnosis, fragmented access, and limited real-world evidence necessary for inf

Implementing a digital audit-and-feedback surveillance system for diabetic ketoacidosis: study protocol for the DEKODE programme.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic ketoacidosis is one of the leading causes of unplanned hospital admission among people with diabetes, yet adherence to treatment guidelines remains inconsistent, contributing to variation in care and suboptimal outcomes. Conventional audit approaches are limited by non-standardised data collection, restricting benchmarking and shared learning. The Digital Evaluation of Ketosis and Other Diabetic Emergencies (DEKODE) platform was developed as a cloud-based audit-and-feedback system to support near real-time performance monitoring and continuous quality improvement, but it

Functional MRI signatures of autonomic physiology in aging.

While traditionally regarded as "noise", blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) fluctuations coupled to systemic physiology-such as heart rate and respiratory changes-also hold valuable information about brain vascular properties and autonomic function. In this study, we leverage these physiological signals to characterize age-related changes in brain physiology, drawing on a large dataset from the Lifespan Human Connectome Project Aging study. Our findings reveal that aging is associated with globally slower respiratory fMRI responses, alongside
