Assessment of anxiety risk association with PAHs and aluminum co-exposure in an aluminum production facility.

BACKGROUND: Workers in aluminum production plants are occupationally exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including the neurotoxicant benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), as well as to aluminum dust and fumes. While the physical health effects are established, the psychological impact, particularly on anxiety, remains less explored. This study investigated the associations of urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP), a biomarker of PAHs exposure, and urinary aluminum levels with anxiety symptoms in aluminum workers. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 260 participants (130 exposed workers and 130

Intimate partner abuse among couples during pregnancy and its predictors as reported by pregnant women visiting governmental health care centres in Tabriz, Iran.

Little is known about intimate partner abuse (IPA) among couples during pregnancy in Iran. This study aimed to compare the rates of IPA by pregnant women towards their husbands (perpetration), and women's experience of IPA from their husbands (victimization) and determine the predictors of the two behaviours. The cross-sectional study was conducted on 525 pregnant women at 24-30 weeks of gestation visiting governmental health care centres/posts in Tabriz, Iran, in 2014. The study sample was selected using random cluster sampling. The Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2) was used to assess IPA

Coping strategies and post traumatic stress injury symptoms differ between tactical and frontline police officers: implications for health and public safety.

INTRODUCTION: Public safety personnel operate under acute threat and limited control, with elevated rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms across occupations. Maintaining their health and functional capacity is essential for individual wellbeing and effective service delivery. However, much of the literature treats these personnel, including police, as a homogeneous group, limiting understanding of role-specific risk processes. Emerging evidence indicates that different roles involve distinct stressors, organizational contexts, and coping demands. The present study examined role-specific diff

Magnitude and determinants of common mental disorders following abortion among women of reproductive age recruited from health institutions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

The prevalence of common mental disorders (CMDs) among women who have had abortions is not well understood. The aim of the study was to assess the magnitude and determinants of CMDs following abortion. The study was conducted in five health institutions in Addis Ababa among 460 women aged 18-49 years who had had at least one abortion. The single population proporti

Exertional hyponatremia among active component members of the U.S. Armed Forces, 2009-2024.

Exertional hyponatremia, or hyponatremia associated with exercise, occurs within 24 hours after physical activity due to a serum, plasma, or blood sodium concentration ([Na+]) below the normal reference range of 135 mEq/L. Hyponatremia can be fatal if not detected early and managed properly. From 2009 to 2024, 1,829 cases of exertional hyponatremia were diagnosed among U.S. active component service members (ACSMs), with an overall incidence rate of 8.4 cases per 100,000 person-years (p-yrs). In 2024, 134 cases of exertional hyponatremia were diagnosed among ACSMs, resulting in a crude incidenc

Associations among the workplace violence, burnout, depressive symptoms, suicidality, and turnover intention in training physicians: a network analysis of nationwide survey.

Depression and anxiety are the most common mental disorders among physicians, who have a greater risk of suicide than those in other professional occupations. Relationships among a demanding workload, workplace violence, burnout, and intention to turnover have also been reported. The current study examined the principal components and propagating patterns of mental health and working environment interactions in training physicians. A total of 1981 training physicians completed online self-report questionnaires during September-October (midpoint of the training year) 2020. Regularized partial c

Primary prevention in health care employees: a prospective intervention study with a 3-year training period.

Irritant contact dermatitis is a mayor problem in health care employees. Because educational programs have shown convincing success in certain occupations (e.g. in hairdressers), this study investigates the effect of a special training program in health care trainees. 521 trainees from 14 nursing schools in Central Germany were randomly divided in 2 groups, (i) an intervention group with a regular teaching protocol regarding all aspects of primary prevention and (ii) a control group without any further teaching. Morphological changes of the hands, use of hand care creams and knowledge regardin

Resurgence of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in the United States: Anesthetic and Critical Care Implications.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) such as measles and pertussis are becoming more common in the United States. This disturbing trend is driven by several factors, including the antivaccination movement, waning efficacy of certain vaccines, pathogen adaptation, and travel of individuals to and from areas where disease is endemic. The anesthesia-related manifestations of many VPDs involve airway complications, cardiovascular and respiratory compromise, and unusual neurologic and neuromuscular symptoms. In this article, we will review the presentation and management of 9 VPDs most relevant to a
