Results in 23 patients with significant craniocerebral trauma (Glasgow Coma Scale less than or equal to 10) and displaced acetabular fracture requiring surgery were reviewed after a minimum follow-up of 1 year. Despite a postoperative anatomic reduction in all but one case, clinical outcome for these hips was poor, with an average Harris hip rating of 59. Patients older than 40 years had a significantly poorer outcome than did younger patients (p = 0.004). Postoperative problems occurred in 70% of patients (n = 16); the largest portion of these represented symptomatic heterotopic bone, which o

UNLABELLED: Using data from the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study, several risk factors predictive of imminent (2-year) risk of low-trauma non-vertebral fracture among high-risk women were identified, including history of falls, history of low-trauma fracture, poorer physical function, and lower T score. Careful consideration should be given to targeting this population for therapy.
PURPOSE: Fracture risk assessment has focused on a long-term horizon and populations with a broad risk range. For elderly women with osteoporosis or low bone mass, or a history of fragility fractures ("high-

Abaloparatide-SC is a novel 34-amino acid peptide created to be a potent and selective activator of the parathyroid hormone receptor type 1 (PTHR1) signaling pathway. In the Abaloparatide Comparator Trial in Vertebral Endpoints (ACTIVE) Phase 3 trial (NCT01343004), abaloparatide reduced new morphometric vertebral fractures by 86% compared with placebo (p < 0.001) and nonvertebral fractures by 43% (p = 0.049) in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Abaloparatide-SC increased bone mineral density (BMD) 3.4% at the total hip, 2.9% at the femoral neck, and 9.2% at the lumbar spine at 18 months

BACKGROUND: The optimal management of elderly patients with displaced acetabular fractures remains controversial. This paper aims to summarize the clinical results of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and the possible factors influencing them.
METHODS: Radiographic and clinical data on 52 elderly patients with displaced acetabular fractures that were treated by ORIF between May 2000 and May 2008 were retrospectively analysed. Data, such as fracture type (Letournel's classification system), quality of reduction, clinical outcomes (Harris hip score and modified Merle d'Aubigne-Postel

INTRODUCTION: Subtrochanteric fractures are difficult fractures associated with high incidence of complications and various implants, both intramedullary and extramedullary, are available for their fixation. Traditional extramedullary implants are associated with higher rate of implant failure and varus collapse while the biomechanically better intramedullary nails are technically demanding and are associated with higher re-operation rates. This study was done to evaluate the outcome following biological (indirect) fixation of unstable comminuted subtrochanteric fractures with proximal femur-l

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Hip osteoarthritis (OA) induces chronic pain and disability in aging populations. Opioids are increasingly prescribed for refractory hip OA pain; however, comparative safety data are limited. This study aimed to compare the psychiatric, cardiovascular and skeletal outcomes between codeine and oxycodone in patients with hip OA.
METHODS: A population-based retrospective cohort using Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) claims data was performed in hip OA (M16) patients who initiated codeine or oxycodone. Propensity score matching (PSM) was applied

BACKGROUND: Posterior hip dislocation in children and adolescents may involve the non-ossified posterior acetabular wall. Plain radiographs and computed tomography (CT) have been shown to underestimate injury to the unossified acetabulum as well as associated soft-tissue structures.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe findings on radiographs, CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after posterior hip dislocation in a series of adolescents and to report the intraoperative findings, which are considered the gold standard. Measurements of the posterior wall length using MRI and

OBJECTIVES: Femoral shaft fractures are one of the most prevalent fractures found in clinical practice. Numerous operative and non-operative options are readily available for the treatment of such fractures with intra-medullary nailing being the gold standard. To date, no consensus has been reached favoring one approach over the other. Thus, this meta-analysis aims to compare the outcomes between an antegrade and retrograde intra-medullary nailing for the treatment of femoral shaft fractures.
METHODS: PubMed, Cochrane, Google Scholar (page 1-20), and Embase were searched till January 2024. Th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine the role of testosterone in skeletal health in men.
RECENT FINDINGS: Evidence from recent studies shows that the contributing role of testosterone to osteoporosis is modest and likely trumped by other factors such as estradiol levels. A few studies have documented an association between low testosterone levels and lower bone mineral density (BMD), increased prevalence of osteoporosis of the hip and low bone mass-related fractures. Other studies, however, have found that testosterone levels are not independent predictors of bone resorption or formation markers, BM

Femoral neck stress fractures (FNSFs) are rare, constituting only 5% of all stress fractures in young adults. These fractures are usually seen in athletes, military recruits and patients with underlying metabolic diseases. The treatment of FNSFs is still controversial because of the inherent complications associated with the treatment procedure. We came across 4 cases of bilateral FNSFs in non-athletic individuals who were manual labourers without underlying bony disorders. Two patients with FNSFs and coxa vara deformity on both sides were managed by subtrochanteric valgus osteotomy and dynami

The aim of the current study was to analyze the role of traditional and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-related risk factors in the development of vertebral fractures. A cross-sectional study was performed in women with SLE attending a single center. A vertebral fracture was defined as a reduction of at least 20% of vertebral body height. Two hundred ten patients were studied, with median age of 43 years and median disease duration of 72 months. Osteopenia was present in 50.3% of patients and osteoporosis in 17.4%. At least one vertebral fracture was detected in 26.1%. Patients with vertebr

With China's aging society, the number of patients with hemiplegia caused by cerebrovascular accident is increasing gradually. The risk of hip fracture in the first year after the onset of this kind of patients is 4 times higher than that of ordinary people, and most of them occur in the side of hemiplegia. For senile femoral neck fracture, artificial joint replacement is almost the first choice of treatment, with mature operation technology and good curative effect. At present, it is considered that if the muscle strength of hemiplegic side can reach grade III after cerebral vascular accident

We report the case of a 93-year-old patient with bilateral Mac Kee-Farrar hip arthroplasties implanted 34 years ago. The patient was seen in 2005 for a type B1 periprosthetic fracture on the right prosthesis implanted in 1973. There was no loosening and the fracture was treated by plate fixation. Before the fracture, the Postel-Merle d'Aubigné (PMA) score was 16 on both sides, with a Devane activity score grade 2. At last follow-up, the PMA score was 13 for both hips, with a Devane activity score grade 1. Serum cobalt level was 1.36 microg/L (normal <1 microg/L). This exceptional case is to ou

BACKGROUND: Femoral head fractures (FHF) are uncommon and generally caused by high-energy injuries. Surgical reduction with stable fixation of large fragments is believed to have the best outcomes. This retrospective study intended to report outcomes with surgical treatment at our institution and tried to establish treatment algorithm.
METHODS: Through the 6-year period (2003-2008), 35 FHF in 35 consecutive patients (average, 30 years) were surgically treated. All FHF were caused by high-energy trauma. Patients' general condition was stabilized first and hip dislocation was manually reduced i
