A Sex Comparison of the Physical and Physiological Demands of United States Marine Corps Recruit Training.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) recruit training is a 13-week preparatory period for military service men and women. Differences in absolute performance capabilities between sexes may impact physical and physiological responses to the demands of recruit training. The purpose of this study was to monitor U.S. Marine Corps recruits throughout recruit training to comparatively assess workload, sleep, stress, and performance responses in men and women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 281 recruits (men = 182 and women = 99; age = 19 ± 2 years) were monitored and tested. Workload, slee

Neonatal Hair Cortisol and Birth Outcomes: An Empirical Study and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal stress physiology is often posited as a predictor of birth outcomes, including gestational age at birth and birthweight. However, research has predominantly relied on indicators in the maternal system, with few studies examining hormones of the fetal system. The current study focuses on fetal cortisol in the third trimester, as measured in neonatal hair, as a biological factor that might be associated with birth outcomes (gestational age at birth and birthweight). We report findings from two studies: a longitudinal cohort (Study 1), and a meta-analysis of the existing liter

Long-term carbaryl exposure leads to behavioral abnormalities and reproductive toxicity in male marine medaka through apoptosis-mediated HPA and HPG axes dysregulation.

Carbaryl is a widely used carbamate pesticide that has been detected in the marine environment, but its effects on marine fish are still unknown. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of long-term exposure of carbaryl on male marine medaka. For this purpose, we set up five exposure concentration groups of 0, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 µg/L for 180 days. On the one hand, we observed increased aggression and decreased ability to avoid predators in males after exposure, which was affected by the levels of HPA-axis hormones, especially decreased cortisol level. On the other hand, after exposure

The association between maternal prenatal hair cortisol concentration and preterm birth: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The risk of preterm birth (PTB) increases when experiencing stress during pregnancy. Chronic stress has been associated with a dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, for which hair cortisol concentration (HCC) is a promising biomarker. However, previous studies on the association between HCC and PTB yielded inconsistent results. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesized previous studies on the association between maternal HCC before and during pregnancy and spontaneous PTB. METHODS: Data was extracted from N = 11 studies with k = 19 effect sizes retri

Physiological and hormonal changes between postmenopausal rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus in women.

It is thought that sex hormones are playing an actual role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The purpose of this study was to determine the differences of some hematological, hormonal and immunological parameters between the postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. This study contained 75 postmenopausal women (52-65 years old). They included 25 women diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, 25 diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus and 25 normal controls. Blood was collected and used to determine co

Nocturnal Salivary Cortisol Is an Accurate Non-Invasive Test to Assess Endogenous Hypercortisolism in Children with Obesity and a Clinical Phenotype Suspicious for Cushing's Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Cushing's syndrome (CS) constitutes one of the most challenging diagnostic assessments for paediatric endocrinologists. The clinical presentation of some children with exogenous obesity overlaps with those observed in hypercortisolism states. Accurate, non-invasive first-line tests are necessary to avoid false-positive results in the obese. We aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of salivary cortisol to assess endogenous hypercortisolism in children with obesity and clinical overlapping signs of CS. METHODS: Case-control study that included children aged 2-18 years, BMI-SDS

Clinical features and risk factors for postoperative recurrence in patients with Cushing's syndrome of different etiologies.

The clinical characteristics of Cushing's syndrome (CS) vary with etiology, and few studies have investigated the risk factors affecting CS recurrence after surgery. This retrospective study involved 202 patients diagnosed with CS between December 2012 and December 2022. The patients were divided into three groups according to etiology: Cushing's disease (CD), adrenocortical adenoma (ACA), and ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome (EAS). Of the patients with CS, 41.9% had hypokalemia and 15.0% had hypophosphatemia. The cortisol levels were negatively correlated with blood potassi

Dose-dependent stress response of esfenvalerate insecticide on common carp (Cyprinus carpio): Evaluating blood parameters and gene expression.

Esfenvalerate is a pyrethroid insecticide used primarily in the agriculture sector for insect management. Esfenvalerate is effective against a wide range of harmful insects, including flies, cockroaches, locusts, and many other types of bugs. It is also known that esfenvalerate has toxic effects on aquatic organisms and poses significant environmental concerns. In this study, the aim is to subchronically examine the effects of sublethal concentrations of esfenvalerate insecticide on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) by assessing changes in blood parameters and resulting gene expression. For this p

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis responsivity during adolescence in relation to psychopathic personality traits later in life.

Psychopathic personality traits have been linked to low physiological arousal, particularly among high risk and forensic samples. A core indicator of physiological arousal is the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; however, findings of a link between HPA axis functioning and psychopathic personality traits have been inconsistent. Furthermore, given sex differences in both HPA axis responsivity and psychopathic personality traits, the association may be expected to differ between men and women. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between HPA axis resp

Germline PRKACA amplification-associated primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease: a case report and literature review.

Primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease (PPNAD) is a rare adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH)-independent Cushing's syndrome (CS). Pediatric patients with PPNAD typically have unusual skin lesions and slow growth with unknown causes. We present a case of a female Chinese patient with PPNAD caused by the germline PRKACA gene copy number gain of chromosome 19. The patient initially presented with kidney stones, short stature, and obesity. After further testing, it was discovered that the patient had diabetes, mild hypertension, low bone mass, a low ACTH level, and hypercortisolemia, and

The scalp prefrontal-limbic functional connectivity moderates stress-related rumination effects on stress recovery.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders are often associated with hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction, and rumination has been implicated in delayed cortisol recovery. However, research findings on the impact of rumination on cortisol recovery have been inconsistent. The moderating effects of scalp prefrontal-limbic connections on the relationship between rumination and cortisol recovery may explain these discrepancies. METHOD: Acute stress was induced by a 5-min simulated job interview. Salivary samples and affective ratings were collected at seven pre-determined time points. After the

Cardiovascular and metabolic characters of KCNJ5 somatic mutations in primary aldosteronism.

BACKGROUND: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the leading cause of curable endocrine hypertension, which is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular and metabolic insults compared to essential hypertension. Aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) is a major cause of PA, which can be treated with adrenalectomy. Somatic mutations are the main pathogenesis of aldosterone overproduction in APA, of which KCNJ5 somatic mutations are most common, especially in Asian countries. This article aimed to review the literature on the impacts of KCNJ5 somatic mutations on systemic organ damage. EVIDENCE ACQU

Associations between nutritional intake, stress and hunger biomarkers, and anxiety and depression during the treatment of anorexia nervosa in adolescents and young adults.

Adolescents and young adults (AYA) with anorexia nervosa (AN) frequently have co-occurring anxiety and depression, which can negatively impact prognosis. To inform treatment of co-occurring anxiety and depression, we assessed the association of nutritional intake and hunger/stress hormones on anxiety and depression using a six-month longitudinal study of 50 AYA females receiving care for AN. At baseline and six months, we measured anxiety (Spielberger State/Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI]), depression (Beck Depression Inventory [BDI]), body mass index (BMI), 3-day dietary intake (total calories
