Synthesis of α-Dawson-type silicotungstate [α-Si2W18O62]8- and protonation and deprotonation inside the aperture through intramolecular hydrogen bonds.

The design of structurally well-defined anionic molecular metal-oxygen clusters, polyoxometalates (POMs), leads to inorganic receptors with unique and tunable properties. Herein, an α-Dawson-type silicotungstate, TBA8[α-Si2W18O62]⋅3 H2O (II) that possesses a -8 charge was successfully synthesized by dimerization of a trivacant lacunary α-Keggin-type silicotungstate TBA4H6[α-SiW9O34]⋅2 H2O (I) in an organic solvent. POM II could be reversibly protonated (in the presence of acid) and deprotonated (in the presence of base) inside the aperture by means of intramolecular hydrogen bonds with retenti

Diffusive and non-diffusive photo-induced proton coupled electron transfer from hydrogen bonded phenols to meso-tetrakis-5,10,15,20-pentafluorophenyl porphyrin.

Enhanced reductive fluorescence quenching of meso-tetrakis-5,10,15,20-pentafluorophenyl porphyrin (H2F20TPP) by two different phenols, 4-methoxy phenol (4-MeOPhOH) and 2,6-dimethoxy phenol (2,6-DiMeOPhOH) in the presence of various pyridine bases in dichloromethane solution is studied using steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopic methods by employing time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) and fluorescence up-conversion techniques. An enhanced quenching behaviour of H2F20TPP is observed when phenols are hydrogen bonded to various pyridine bases. Quenching observed in t

Removal of gas-phase ammonia and hydrogen sulfide using photocatalysis, nonthermal plasma, and combined plasma and photocatalysis at pilot scale.

This study focuses on the removal of gas-phase ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in a continuous reactor. Photocatalysis and surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD) plasma are studied separately and combined. Though the removal of volatile organic compounds by coupling plasma and photocatalysis has been reported on a number of studies in laboratory scale, this is as far as we know the first time that it is used to remove inorganic malodorous pollutants. While each separate process is able to degrade ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, a synergetic effect appears when they are combined at

Activation of the EGFR/p38/JNK pathway by mitochondrial-derived hydrogen peroxide contributes to oxygen-induced contraction of ductus arteriosus.

UNLABELLED: Oxygen-induced contraction of the ductus arteriosus (DA) involves a mitochondrial oxygen sensor, which signals pO2 in the DA smooth muscle cell (DASMC) by increasing production of diffusible hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). H2O2 stimulates vasoconstriction by regulating ion channels and Rho kinase, leading to calcium influx and calcium sensitization. Because epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling is also redox regulated and participates in oxygen sensing and vasoconstriction in other systems, we explored the role of the EGFR and its signaling cascade (p38 and c-Jun N-amino-term

Leptin-induced endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation of peripheral arteries in lean and obese rats: role of nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide.

Adipose tissue hormone leptin induces endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation mediated by nitric oxide (NO) and endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factors (EDHF). Previously it has been demonstrated that in short-term obesity the NO-dependent and the EDHF-dependent components of vascular effect of leptin are impaired and up-regulated, respectively. Herein we examined the mechanism of the EDHF-dependent vasodilatory effect of leptin and tested the hypothesis that alterations of acute vascular effects of leptin in obesity are accounted for by chronic hyperleptinemia. The study was performed in 5 g

Formation of hydroxyacetonitrile (HOCH2CN) and polyoxymethylene (POM)-derivatives in comets from formaldehyde (CH2O) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) activated by water.

Studying chemical reactivity is an important way to improve our understanding of the origin of organic matter in astrophysical environments such as molecular clouds, protoplanetary disks, and possibly, as a final destination, in our solar system bodies such as in comets. Laboratory simulations on the reactivity of ice analogs can provide important insights into this complex reactivity. Here, the role of water as a catalytic agent is investigated under the conditions of simulated interstellar and cometary grains in the formation of complex organic molecules: the hydroxyacetonitrile (HOCH2CN) an

Increase or decrease hydrogen sulfide exert opposite lipolysis, but reduce global insulin resistance in high fatty diet induced obese mice.

OBJECTIVE: Adipose tissue expressed endogenous cystathionine gamma lyase (CSE)/hydrogen sulfide (H2S) system. H2S precursor inhibited catecholamine stimulated lipolysis. Thus, we hypothesized that CSE/H2S system regulates lipolysis which contributed to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. METHODS: We treated rat adipocyte with DL-propargylglycine (PAG, a CSE inhibitor), L-cysteine (an H2S precursor) plus pyridoxial phosphate (co-enzyme) or the H2S chronic release donor GYY4137, then the glycerol level was assayed for assessing the lipolysis. Then, the effects of PAG and GYY4137 on insulin

Influence of hydronium, sulfate, chloride and other non-carbonate ions on hydrogen generation by anaerobic corrosion of granular cast iron.

Permeable reactive barriers are successfully applied for the removal of various contaminants. The concomitant reduction of hydrogen ions and the subsequent formation of hydrogen gas by anaerobic corrosion lead to decreased pore volume filled with water and thus residence times, so called gas clogging. Long term column experiments were conducted to elucidate the impact of ubiquitous water constituents on the formation of hydrogen gas and potential passivation due to corrosion products. The collected gas volumes revealed a relation to the hydronium concentration (pH) but were only slightly incre

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal inoculation increases phenolic synthesis in clover roots via hydrogen peroxide, salicylic acid and nitric oxide signaling pathways.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can increase the host resistance to pathogens via promoted phenolic synthesis, however, the signaling pathway responsible for it still remains unclear. In this study, in order to reveal the signaling molecules involved in this process, we inoculated Trifolium repense L. with an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), Glomus mosseae, and monitored the contents of phenolics and signaling molecules (hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), salicylic acid (SA), and nitric oxide (NO)) in roots, measured the activities of l-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and nitric oxide synthase (

Spectral deciphering of the interaction between an intramolecular hydrogen bonded ESIPT drug, 3,5-dichlorosalicylic acid, and a model transport protein.

The present work demonstrates a detailed characterization of the interaction of a bio-active drug molecule 3,5-dichlorosalicyclic acid (3,5DCSA) with a model transport protein Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA). The drug molecule is a potential candidate exhibiting Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) reaction and the modulation of ESIPT photophysics within the bio-environment of the protein has been exploited spectroscopically to monitor the drug-protein binding interaction. Apart from evaluating the binding constant (K (±10%) = 394 M(-1)) the probable location of the neutral drug mol

Susceptibility of Atlantic salmon lenses to hydrogen peroxide oxidation ex vivo after being fed diets with vegetable oil and methylmercury.

The development of cataract in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) has been related to changes in feed composition resulting in sub-optimal lens nutrition. The present study was performed to investigate the ability of Atlantic salmon lenses to withstand oxidative stress ex vivo, with focus on the nutritional lipid history and exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) as a relevant dietary contaminant. Since dietary histidine has been shown to have a mitigating effect on the prevalence of cataract in farmed salmon, the antioxidative abilities of histidine and NAH, a major imidazole in the salmon len

Open-label trial and randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial of hydrogen-enriched water for mitochondrial and inflammatory myopathies.

BACKGROUND: Molecular hydrogen has prominent effects on more than 30 animal models especially of oxidative stress-mediated diseases and inflammatory diseases. In addition, hydrogen effects on humans have been reported in diabetes mellitus type 2, hemodialysis, metabolic syndrome, radiotherapy for liver cancer, and brain stem infarction. Hydrogen effects are ascribed to specific radical-scavenging activities that eliminate hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite, and also to signal-modulating activities, but the detailed molecular mechanisms still remain elusive. Hydrogen is a safe molecule that is

Ameliorative effects of melatonin against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress on boar sperm characteristics and subsequent in vitro embryo development.

Melatonin, the major secretory product of the pineal gland, scavenges a variety of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in vivo and in vitro, indicating that melatonin is a potent function as an antioxidant. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of melatonin in the presence or absence of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) on sperm characteristics (motility, viability, survival rate, membrane integrity, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and mitochondria activity) and also to examine the developmental rates to the blastocysts stage of porcine oocytes fertilized in vitro with semen treated w

Nucleotide- and activator-dependent structural and dynamic changes of arp2/3 complex monitored by hydrogen/deuterium exchange and mass spectrometry.

Arp2/3 complex plays a central role in the de novo nucleation of filamentous actin as branches on existing filaments. The complex must bind ATP, protein activators [e.g., Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASp)], and the side of an actin filament to form a new actin filament. Amide hydrogen/deuterium exchange coupled with mass spectrometry was used to examine the structural and dynamic properties of the mammalian Arp2/3 complex in the presence of both ATP and the activating peptide segment from WASp. Changes in the rate of hydrogen exchange indicate that ATP binding causes conformational rearr

Oxygen consumption, ventilation frequency and cytochrome c oxidase activity in blue cod (Parapercis colias) exposed to hydrogen sulphide or isoeugenol.

The effects of hydrogen sulphide (H(2)S) and isoeugenol exposure on activity, oxygen consumption (VO(2)), ventilation frequency (Vf) and cytochrome c oxidase activity in a teleost fish are reported. In H(2)S (200 microM Na(2)S) exposed animals VO(2) and Vf decreased significantly (both to 40% of resting) after 30 min, concurrent with a loss of equilibrium and narcosis. Post-flushing, VO(2) increased to resting values, but Vf remained depressed (P<0.05) until 30 min of recovery. Subsequently, equilibrium and mobility were regained accompanied by increases in VO(2) (66%) and Vf (15%) between 60-

Hydrogen peroxide is a novel mediator of inflammatory hyperalgesia, acting via transient receptor potential vanilloid 1-dependent and independent mechanisms.

Inflammatory diseases associated with pain are often difficult to treat in the clinic due to insufficient understanding of the nociceptive pathways involved. Recently, there has been considerable interest in the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in inflammatory disease, but little is known of the role of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in hyperalgesia. In the present study, intraplantar injection of H(2)O(2)-induced a significant dose- and time-dependent mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia in the mouse hind paw, with increased c-fos activity observed in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Comparison of nanosecond and picosecond excitation for interference-free two-photon laser-induced fluorescence detection of atomic hydrogen in flames.

Two-photon laser-induced fluorescence (TP-LIF) line imaging of atomic hydrogen was investigated in a series of premixed CH4/O2/N2, H2/O2, and H2/O2/N2 flames using excitation with either picosecond or nanosecond pulsed lasers operating at 205 nm. Radial TP-LIF profiles were measured for a range of pulse fluences to determine the maximum interference-free signal levels and the corresponding picosecond and nanosecond laser fluences in each of 12 flames. For an interference-free measurement, the shape of the TP-LIF profile is independent of laser fluence. For larger fluences, distortions in the p

Inhibition of human dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase-1 by S-nitroso-L-homocysteine and hydrogen peroxide. Analysis, quantification, and implications for hyperhomocysteinemia.

The plasma concentrations of two cardiovascular risk factors, total homocysteine (tHcy) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), correlate with decreased levels of endothelium-derived nitric oxide and subsequent endothelial dysfunction. Homocysteine has been proposed to inhibit the catabolic enzyme of ADMA, dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH), but the mechanism of this inhibition has not been fully elucidated. Here, the human DDAH isoform-1 (DDAH-1) is heterologously expressed and purified. Cys(274) and His(173) are identified as active site residues and the pH rate dependence is des
