Ten Year Review of Wound Culture Results and Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns in a Burn Center.

INTRODUCTION: Burn patients are susceptible to infections, responsible for up to half of in-hospital deaths. These infections are often caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens, making treatment difficult. This study aimed to assess trends in positive wound cultures during hospitalization in our burn unit over the last decade. METHODS: Patients admitted from July 2013 to June 2023 were included. To exclude community-acquired infections, only wound cultures collected after first positive cultures were included. Demographics and information concerning burn injury, admission, and wound cultures w

Developmental co-calibration and therapeutic recalibration: a neurobiopsychosocial model of regulatory path dependence in psychosomatic care.

Psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine require accounts that connect developmental context, embodied regulation, bodily symptoms, and treatment processes without collapsing them into a single causal story. This Hypothesis and Theory article presents developmental co-calibration as an integrative, testable specification rather than a set of novel component mechanisms. It proposes a staged chain in which biological dispositions and current affordances shape regulatory states; states and candidate interoceptive inference processes influence strategy selection; immediate consequences and environ

Towards the harmonization of raw data processing in single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

Despite the availability of advanced data processing tools for single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS), users cannot fully trust on them to obtain reliable and accurate information due to their lack of validation. Along this work, current approaches for data processing have been evaluated in depth, paying special attention to the criteria and expressions used for calculation of critical values concerning the discrimination of baseline and particle readings, the counting of particle events and the determination of their total intensities, in order to promote the

Permanent Complications After Dermal Fillers: Risks, Prevention, and Management Strategies.

BACKGROUND: Dermal fillers are widely utilized in esthetic medicine for soft tissue augmentation and facial rejuvenation. Generally safe, complications are mostly minor. Permanent complications, though rare, are disastrous and overwhelmingly caused by insufficient understanding of facial anatomy, wrong filler selection, technique, and poor diagnosis and management. This review aims to bridge the knowledge gaps that lead to permanent complications, provide guidelines to avoid them, and create best practices to manage them should they occur. METHODS: A PRISMA-guided systematic search of PubMed

Quantitative Modeling of TLR Signaling Reveals Missing Negative Feedback Guiding Identification of TANK-IKKε Checkpoint.

Sensing of tissue injury or infection by Toll-like receptors (TLRs) must rapidly mobilize host defense, but that activation must also be terminated on an appropriate time scale to avoid sustained, tissue-damaging inflammation. The full network of molecular interactions that governs both the rapid onset and the properly timed shutoff of TLR signaling remains incompletely characterized at a deep mechanistic level. To this end, we built a rule-based model of mouse macrophage TLR4 signaling at the molecular-interaction level, parameterized with measured protein copy numbers, RNA-seq-based abundanc

Cellular respiration toxicity: A novel comprehensive water quality index based on universal biological processes.

Assessing water quality comprehensively is crucial for predicting environmental risks. However, existing toxicity assessments are limited to specific physiological processes or reference organisms, failing to capture holistic hazards. Here we define a toxicity index-Cellular Respiration Toxicity (CRT)-based on the universal process of cellular respiration. By quantifying changes in intracellular reduced coenzyme levels using a dual-compartment electrochemical cell and K3[Fe(CN)6], CRT measures inhibition of energy metabolism across life forms. We systematically applied CRT to 76 common polluta

Methadone Diversion and Overdose: What Does the Evidence Say? A Narrative Review.

OBJECTIVES: Policy reforms are being considered to increase methadone treatment (MT) access for opioid use disorder in the United States. Proponents of more structured MT reference risks of diversion, including non-prescribed use or redistribution of methadone, and overdose as arguments for limiting access to specialty settings. However, the scientific evidence behind these claims has not been thoroughly reviewed. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of studies on methadone diversion, diverted methadone-involved overdoses, and how these compare in countries with specialty-care-only polici

Concussion knowledge, awareness, and experiences of indigenous youth ice hockey players: A call for culturally grounded concussion education and recovery.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the knowledge, awareness, and lived experiences of Indigenous youth ice hockey players across Canada with respect to concussion. Using a community-engaged approach grounded in Two-Eyed Seeing, we examined how intersections of culture, sport, and healthcare shape concussion education, disclosure, and recovery. Sport-related concussions (SRCs) are a significant health concern in Canada, with Indigenous youth disproportionately affected by injuries due to systemic inequities in healthcare access, culturally relevant education, and historical mistrust of medical inst

Experiences and satisfaction with intensive community care services for children and adolescents with severe mental health disorders: a mixed-methods systematic review.

Intensive community care services (ICCS) are community-based alternatives to inpatient care for young people with severe mental health disorders. This systematic review investigated the experiences and satisfaction associated with ICCS. Nine electronic databases were searched from inception to August 2025 for studies on children and adolescents under 18 years receiving mental health care from ICCS. Primary outcomes were experiences and satisfaction from the young people, parents, or clinicians. Quantitative satisfaction data were qualitised before integrating with qualitative data. The synthes

Suicides in children and early adolescents: a retrospective review from a large metropolitan area.

Suicide in individuals younger than 14 years remains an underrecognized and understudied phenomenon in forensic pathology, despite increasing incidence and substantial medicolegal implications. Although children are often presumed incapable of understanding death or engaging in intentional self-harm, psychiatric evidence indicates that by age 8 many possess a conceptual understanding of death and suicidal behavior. This retrospective study examines suicidal deaths in subjects under 14 years of age investigated at a large urban medical examiner's office, emphasizing autopsy findings and medicol

Imaging Sturge-Weber Syndrome with the Feed-and-Swaddle FAST Protocol.

Sturge-Weber syndrome is a rare, mosaic neurocutaneous disorder characterized by aberrant microvascular development of the skin, brain, and eyes. Patients present at birth with a facial capillary malformation, commonly called a port-wine birthmark, typically involving the forehead distribution. Intracranial involvement primarily consists of leptomeningeal angiomatosis and is associated with early onset seizures, stroke-like episodes, progressive hemispheric injury, and neurodevelopmental delay. Early onset seizures occur in approximately 75-90% of children and correlate with poor long-term neu

Antiseizure Medications in Older Adults with Epilepsy: Considerations in Pharmacology, Safety, Tolerability, and Effectiveness of Newer Agents.

Older adults represent one of the fastest-growing populations living with epilepsy, yet they remain underrepresented in clinical trials. In this age group, antiseizure medication selection is frequently complicated by multimorbidity, polypharmacy, age-related changes in renal and hepatic function, and vulnerability to adverse effects such as falls and cognitive impairment. Because many antiseizure medications demonstrate comparable efficacy for seizure control, medication tolerability and quality-of-life considerations often play a decisive role in treatment selection for older adults. This na

Utilization of the Community Engagement Studio model to facilitate participatory design of a multicenter randomized controlled trial of the efficacy of scoliosis specific exercise rehabilitation.

INTRODUCTION: Engaging individuals with lived experience enhances the rigor and real-world relevance of clinical research. In adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), where non-surgical evidence remains limited, involving patients and caregivers informs design, recruitment, and retention for future trials. METHODS: Using the Community Engagement (CE) Studio model, we conducted a 1.5-hour virtual session with children aged 10-16 years with AIS and their caregivers residing in North America. Participants (no spinal surgery; with/without brace) were recruited through engagement databases, advocacy

Clinical features of central sensitization moderate the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in chronic low back pain.

This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial investigated whether baseline clinical characteristics moderate the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and motor control exercise (MCE) for chronic low back pain (CLBP). One hundred and forty participants were randomized to active or sham rTMS treatment, combined with or without MCE. Six potential effect modifiers (sex, kinesiophobia, self-efficacy, central sensitization features, lumbar instability, and expectation) were assessed at baseline. Linear mixed models tested interaction effects on pain and disabil

Long-Term Follow-Up for Child with Ataxia Telangiectasia Related Scoliosis Using Surface Topography: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Scoliosis prevalence in patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT) is higher than in the general population. Scoliosis monitoring is traditionally performed using X-rays, but radiographic imaging is contraindicated in AT patients due to radiation sensitivity. Current guidelines suggest a diagnostic radiograph with subsequent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). In this report, we (1) evaluated the feasibility of using surface topography (ST) to observe 3D spine curvature trends in a long-term follow-up of a patient with scoliosis and AT, and (2) developed a nov

Patient radiation safety in imaging in Crohn's disease.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the mouth to anus and has an estimated incidence of up to 20 cases per 100 000. It is a chronic remitting disease associated with significant morbidity and increasing incidence worldwide. While endoscopy and biopsy form the cornerstone of diagnosis, cross-sectional imaging modalities such as ultrasound (US), CT, and MRI play a pivotal role in assessing disease extent and treatment response. Luminal complications such as stenoses, strictures, and complications such as fistula an
