Maternal Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Type 1 Diabetes, and Type 2 Diabetes During Pregnancy and Risk of ADHD in Offspring.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative importance of maternal preexisting type 1 diabetes (T1D), preexisting type 2 diabetes (T2D), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on risk of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This retrospective birth cohort study included 333,182 singletons born in 1995-2012 within Kaiser Permanente Southern California hospitals. Children were prospectively followed through electronic medical records from age 4 years. Relative risks of ADHD associated with diabetes exposures in utero were estimated by hazard ratios

Nitrosatable drug exposure during the first trimester of pregnancy and selected congenital malformations.

BACKGROUND: Nitrosatable drugs can react with nitrite in the stomach to form N-nitroso compounds, and results from animal studies suggest that N-nitroso compounds are teratogens. With data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, the relation between prenatal exposure to nitrosatable drugs and limb deficiencies, oral cleft, and heart malformations in offspring was examined. METHODS: Maternal reports of drugs taken during the first trimester of pregnancy were classified with respect to nitrosatability for mothers of 741 babies with limb deficiencies, 2774 with oral cleft malformations

Human chorionic gonadotropin alpha and beta levels are associated with maternal demographic characteristics and psychosocial measures of stress and discrimination.

INTRODUCTION: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a heterodimeric hormone regulated in part by the maternal neuroendocrine-placenta axis. Serum levels of the beta subunit (hCGβ) are higher in Black vs. White pregnancies. The underlying causes of the difference remain unclear. The objective of the study was to measure associations of maternal demographic and anthropometric characteristics, and self-reported measures of stress and discrimination with hCG and its subunits in a racially diverse sample. METHODS: Serum samples were provided by longitudinal birth cohorts in Rochester, NY and in Pi

Maternal Fiber Intake During Pregnancy and Development of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms Across Childhood: The Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest that maternal diet quality during pregnancy may influence the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. Here, we investigated associations between maternal intake of dietary fiber and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in early childhood. METHODS: We used longitudinal data of up to 21,852 mother-father-child trios (49.2% female offspring) from MoBa (the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study). The relationships between maternal fiber intake during pregnancy and offspring ADHD symptoms at ages 3, 5, and 8 year

Maternal iron status in early pregnancy and DNA methylation in offspring: an epigenome-wide meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Unbalanced iron homeostasis in pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of adverse birth and childhood health outcomes. DNA methylation has been suggested as a potential underlying mechanism linking environmental exposures such as micronutrient status during pregnancy with offspring health. We performed a meta-analysis on the association of maternal early-pregnancy serum ferritin concentrations, as a marker of body iron stores, and cord blood DNA methylation. We included 1286 mother-newborn pairs from two population-based prospective cohorts. Serum ferritin concentrations wer

Infants of Mothers with Cocaine Use: Review of Clinical and Medico-Legal Aspects.

Illicit drug use is a global problem that also affects pregnant women. Substance use and alcohol abuse during pregnancy may have various harmful consequences for both mothers and foetuses. Intrauterine exposure to illicit substances can be investigated through maternal reports and toxicological tests on mothers' and/or newborns' samples. While the negative effects of alcohol and opioid use on pregnancy, the foetus, and/or newborn are well established, the effects of cocaine use remain controversial. We performed a review of the literature to evaluate the current state of knowledge of the effec

Transgenerational tobacco smoke exposure and childhood cancer: an observational study.

AIM: Although tobacco smoke is an established risk factor for adult cancer, studies of the association between parental smoking and childhood cancer have produced inconsistent results. To investigate the transgenerational relationship between pre-natal and post-natal tobacco smoke exposure from the grandmother's pregnancies until after the post-natal period and childhood cancer. METHODS: Exposure to tobacco smoke was recorded for three generations. Data were collected through personal interviews using the paediatric environmental history, and were compared among 128 children with cancer and 1

Violence exposure and the association between young African American mothers' discipline and child problem behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Children of adolescent mothers are at increased risk of violence exposure and behavior problems, which have been linked to mothers' disciplinary practices. This study examines how the effect of young African American mothers' discipline on their preschool-age children's externalizing and internalizing behavior varies by mother and child violence exposure. METHODS: A sample of 230 African American mothers who gave birth as adolescents and their 3- to 6-year-old children were recruited from community-based day care and primary health care sites in the Washington, DC, metropolitan reg

Radiation procedures performed on U.S. women during pregnancy: findings from two 1980 surveys.

The 1980 National Natality Survey (NNS) and 1980 National Fetal Mortality Survey (NFMS) provide a unique opportunity to examine variation in exposure to radiation during pregnancy for mothers of live-born and stillborn infants. Maternal race, age, education, and marital status in both surveys and low birth weight in the 1980 NNS are characteristics used to examine exposure rates for X-ray, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, shortwave, and microwave radiation examinations and treatments. About 15 percent of mothers of live infants and 23 percent of mothers who experienced stillbirths (fetal deaths o

Associations Between Early-Life Exposure to Different Antibiotic Agents and the Risks of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) substantially affect quality of life. Previous studies have not evaluated whether the associations between early-life antibiotic exposure and the risks of ASD and ADHD differ according to the antibiotic agents administered during infancy. Methods: This nationwide case-control study used Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, Birth Reporting Database, and Maternal and Child Health Database. The cohort included 1,693,718 term neonates born between 2004 and 2015 and followed th

Perinatal methimazole exposure impairs the distribution and function of layer 5 neurons in the mouse auditory cortex.

Methimazole (MMI) is an antithyroid drug often prescribed for hyperthyroid conditions. While perinatal MMI exposure is used to model hypothyroidism in rodents, resulting in auditory cortex malformation, mice are reportedly less effective in lowering serum thyroxine levels. This raises the question on MMI-induced hypothyroidism being the underlying cause of cortical malformation. Here we examined if and how perinatal MMI exposure in mice influenced the serum thyroxine level and the distribution and function of deep layer projection neurons in the auditory cortex. MMI exposure resulted in little

A 12-month follow-up of infant neurodevelopmental outcomes of prenatal opioid exposure and polysubstance use.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal opioid exposure has been associated with developmental deficits during infancy, but the literature is limited by simple group comparisons and lack of appropriate controls. Previously published research with the current sample documented unique associations between prenatal opioid exposure and developmental outcomes at three and six months, but less is known about associations later in infancy. METHOD: The current study examined pre- and postnatal opioid and polysubstance exposure as predictors of parent-reported developmental status at 12 months of age. Participants were

Neuropsychological assessment at school-age and prenatal low-level exposure to mercury through fish consumption in an Italian birth cohort living near a contaminated site.

The relative effects of prenatal and postnatal low-level mercury exposure and fish intake on child neurodevelopment are still controversial. Limited evidence is available from Mediterranean populations. In this prospective study, we measured the Verbal and Performance IQ in Italian children at school-age who were resident in an area declared as a National contaminated site because of mercury pollution, taking into account the possible beneficial effect of fish consumption and potential confounders. A mother-child cohort made up of 242 children was established at birth in Northeastern Italy in

Early pregnancy metal levels in maternal blood and pregnancy outcomes.

Prenatal exposure to heavy metals such as Lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and selenium (Se) is associated with various adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study examines the association between early pregnancy maternal blood levels of these metals and adverse pregnancy outcomes, while also addressing the differences between low-risk and high-risk groups based on having a history of preterm birth (PTB). This prospective cohort study recruited parous women during first trimester, categorized into low-risk and high-risk groups. Participants completed a questionnaire, and heavy metal levels we

Dietary soy prevents fetal demise, intrauterine growth restriction, craniofacial dysmorphic features, and impairments in placentation linked to gestational alcohol exposure: Pivotal role of insulin and insulin-like growth factor signaling networks.

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal alcohol exposure can impair placentation and cause intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), fetal demise, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Previous studies showed that ethanol's inhibition of placental insulin and insulin-like growth factor, type 1 (IGF-1) signaling compromises trophoblastic cell motility and maternal vascular transformation at the implantation site. Since soy isolate supports insulin responsiveness, we hypothesized that dietary soy could be used to normalize placentation and fetal growth in an experimental model of FASD. METHODS: Pregnant Lon
