OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of sinus floor elevation (SFE) on sinus physiology, including Schneiderian membrane thickness (MT) and ostium patency, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on pre-established selection criteria, 53 patients in combination with 53 sinuses were referred for SFE with a lateral approach using deproteinized bone mineral. CBCT was performed prior to, immediately after surgery and before staged implant placement. The Schneiderian MT of the elevated region, ostium patency, and other clinical data was evaluated.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is an epithelial neoplasm of sinonasal region which does not exhibit a squamous or glandular differentiation. The authors report a case of nasal malignant melanoma involving the septum, nasal turbinates and nasopharynx which was approached by lateral rhinotomy combined with an anterior transantral approach with excision of the septum and the lateral wall of the nasal cavity for wide exposure of the tumour. Using this technique complete surgical resection of a large nasal malignant melanoma was achieved with minimal morbidity and good aesthetics.

OBJECTIVE: To report the clinical features of 9 patients with both abducens nerve palsy and postganglionic Horner syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nine patients with this symptom combination were examined by our Neuro-ophthalmology Clinic in Nihon University Itabashi Hospital between 1978 and 2004. Fifty-seven treatments were performed on 27 head and neck pateints with recurrent or residual tumors on a high dose rate, remote controlled afterloading unit: There were 16 cases of maxillary sinus tumors, 6 epipharynx, 3 alveolar ridge, 1 hard palate and 1 floor of mouth.
