Retrospectively, we demonstrated that seven pigs necropsied in 1989 had characteristic porcine circovirus 2 (PCV-2) lymphoid tissue lesions of severe lymphoid depletion, syncytial giant cell formation, and intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies in macrophages. Immunohistochemically, PCV-2 antigen was detected in these tissues and the distribution of positive staining corresponded to the distribution of inclusion bodies. Electron microscopy demonstrated viral particles compatible with porcine PCV-2. Therefore, the disease occurred in Japan as early as 1989.

Gastric mucosa of obese patients with duodenal ulcer was investigated by means of light and electron microscopy and morphometrically. The comparison of the morphological findings and data on gastric secretion shows that overall volume of functional structures of the parietal and peptic cells providing secretion is smaller in duodenal ulcer patients with obesity than in non-obese patients. Elevated gastric secretion in these patients is maintained by hyperfunction of the corresponding structures.

A woman who had been taking amiodarone--400 mg/day--for over nine years, developed cirrhosis. Electron microscopy showed phospholipid-laden lysosomal lamellar bodies containing myelin figures. A review is made about the reported cases of amiodarone-induced cirrhosis, including detailed histological findings. We conclude that periodical clinical and biochemical monitoring must be made in patients receiving treatment with amiodarone, and that the pathophysiologic mechanism responsible for the amiodarone toxicity still remains unclear.

Histopathological and ultrastructural studies of 23 patients who died with clinical diagnosis of measles were carried out. In 12 cases viral nucleocapsids were searched by electron microscopy and detected in 100% of the cases in the lungs and in 50% of the cases in the central nervous system. They were mostly intranuclear. Histopathological changes associated to neurological alterations and the detection of virion are discussed in relation to acute and delayed clinical manifestations.

A man presented with 100% immotile spermatozoa. Transmission electron microscopy showed the absence of both central tubules in all sperm tails; the nine peripheral tubules, dynein arms, radial spokes and other structures of the sperm tail were normal. Immotile cilia syndrome of the 9 + 0 tubular pattern was diagnosed. Other anomalies frequently associated with immotile cilia syndrome, such as recurrent airway infections, bronchiectases and situs inversus (Kartagener's syndrome), were not present in this case.

Axenic cultures of Phytomonas sp. were obtained from naturally infected tomatoes and from Phthia picta, a predator of tomato plants, by using a biphasic medium with Roitman's complex medium overlaying rabbit blood-agar slants. Light and electron microscopy of both isolates showed a similarity of morphological characteristics among the flagellates in fresh material or after cultivation. Other properties, including their agglutinability with the haemolymph of Phthia picta, suggest that these isolates are virtually identical.

We report the first case of AIDS-associated Kaposi's Sarcoma in a 35 year old Indian female, a commercial sex worker, with lesions involving skin and mucous membranes. Diagnosis was confirmed on histopathology, electron microscopy, seropositivity, (ELISA and Western Blot) as well as Pepti-LAV test and viral culture. Antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus, both HIV-1 & 2, were present. HLA DR5,7 was positive on oligotyping. Genetic predisposition, therefore, may be suspected.

A fast method for processing biologic material for electron microscopy for precise and specific diagnosis of infectious agents is an increasing necessity. After different, reportedly fast methods were tested, a useful and quick technique was developed that provides well-preserved cellular structures, enabling the etiologic diagnosis of infectious agents even in necrotic tissue or other biologic material such as sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage, and the like. This procedure takes less than 3 hours.

Adult guinea pigs (250-500 g) were exposed to a chronic wide-band noise, at intensities ranging from 117 and 133 dB(A) at different times. The objective of this first part of the study is, after the lesions are established, to classify and put into order the structural damage produced by noise, using surface preparations observed with the light microscope and specimens prepared for scanning electron microscopy, from the organ of Corti.

The case described is that of a 9-yr-old girl presenting with aspartylglycosaminuria. Diagnosis of this lysosomal storage disease was guided by histologic study of gingival specimen sampled in the course of dental care. Transmitted electron microscopy (TEM) revealed many vesicles and cellular inclusions, altered collagenic formations, associated with abnormal extracellular matrix. Gingival biopsy is easily performed, is noniatrogenic, leaves nor scar, and could be properly used to help diagnose metabolic diseases in children.

The ultrastructures of the optic papilla at different intervals during experimental hypotony in rabbits were studied by transmission electron microscopy, with the results that after 14 days the axons of optic nerve fibers showed signs of degeneration; after 21 days there appeared marked pathological changes, and after 30 days there were serious irreversible pathological changes. These findings suggest that clinical hypotony, such as occurs after glaucoma operations particularly, should be duly attended to.

While oral hairy leukoplakia has been observed predominantly in patients with HIV-infection at various stages, recent reports have shown that HL may also occur in patients immunosuppressed for other reasons. This report describes oral hairy leukoplakia in a heart transplant recipient with negative HIV serology. The histopathologic diagnosis of HL was confirmed by immunohistochemical detection of EBV-VCA in the surface epithelium of the lesion and by negative staining electron microscopy.

The change of the venular permeability and endothelial structure was studied with the aid of fluorometry and electron microscopy after application of H2O2. Transmural transfer rate of FITC-albumin++ and permeable fraction of the vessel walls were increased. There were formed the "leaks" and transendothelial canals in the venular endothelium. Numerous local membrane injuries of the endotheliocytes and pericytes, degranulation of the mast cells and destruction of thrombocytes into the vessel lumen were detected.

In this study the ultrastructure of cilia in patients with primary ciliary dyskinesia was compared to that in patients with other respiratory infections and with that in healthy individuals. After statistical analysis of the findings, the prevalence and the specificity of morphological changes in primary ciliary dyskinesia were established. Guidelines were developed by which the existence of primary ciliary dyskinesia can be ascertained in biopsies of nasal mucosa via transmission electron microscopy.

Cryptococcosis must be taken into account as a cause of basal meningitis. Along with a case report, clinical signs and guiding cerebrospinal fluid findings are evaluated. Special attention is paid to CSF-cytology, which provides important information in terms of identification and clinical course of the disease. For the first time C. neoformans, yielded from CSF-samples, was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy, and compared with yeast cultured in laboratory.

The study of 8 C. diphtheriae strains of different origin revealed that these strains were capable of inducing the agglutination of trypsinized sheep red blood cells (SRBC). Toxigenic strains gravis isolated from diphtheria patients were more active in their adhesion to SRBC than toxigenic strains gravis isolated from carriers. The latter were, in their turn, more active than nontoxigenic strains mitis. No fimbriae were detected on the cell surface by electron microscopy.

Aberrant, proliferative sparganosis was diagnosed in a 6-yr-old male domestic long-haired cat from Gainesville, Florida. The cat spent all of its life in Florida. Postmortem examination revealed lesions and spargana in the stomach, spleen, and liver. By light and electron microscopy, unusual mononuclear cells, interpreted as host-derived monocytes, were evident in the stroma of the spargana. Retrovirus-like particles were present in the cytoplasm of some of these cells.

In a sporadic case of primary maxillar Burkitt's lymphoma and secondary spinal epidural dissemination, the massive malignancy in the CSF was investigated by light and electron microscopy. At both levels the CSF tumor cells were strikingly similar, with the undifferentiated lymphoblasts that characterize Burkitt's lymphoma in tissue. However, the starry-sky appearance in the CSF was produced more often by degenerating malignant cells than by histiocytes as classically described in tissue with Burkitt's lymphoma.

Acrodermatitis enteropathica is a very rare disease, usually occurring during child age, but also in grown-ups. Symptoms are skin lesions localized periorally and acrally, alopecia, diarrhea and psychic alterations. The disease is caused by zinc deficiency due to malabsorption. The diagnosis can be established by decreased plasma levels of zinc; typical changes of the Paneth cells may be demonstrated by electron microscopy. Substitution by supplying zinc will lead to complete clinical healing.

The interactions between lymphocytes, Langerhals cells and keratinocytes, are described by electron microscopy in cutaneous lesions of malignant epidermotropic lymphomas (mycosis fungoides and Sézary's syndrome). Various contacts are observed between the different cells. During the degenerating process of keratinocytes, Langerhans cells disappear and histiocytic cells are bound to necrosing epidermal cells. The immunological process of Pautrier microabscess formation is discussed by comparison with ultrastructural aspects of cutaneous lecions of G.V.H. reaction in man.
