Transient global amnesia is a benign, self-limiting disorder primarily involving a disturbance of memory. It occurs in late middle and older aged adults. Patients with this syndrome do not have a history of head trauma, drug or alcohol intoxication, hypoglycemia or psychologic dysfunction. Once the episode has cleared, there are no residual deficits except amnesia for the events which occurred during the episode. An illustrative case report of intraosseous ganglion cyst is presented. Intraosseous ganglion cysts are uncommon, juxta-articular, and benign. They are thought to arise from an intramedullary metaplastic event. Intraosseous ganglia are most common in middle-aged patients. They usually involve the tibia but also are located in other skeletal sites. The lesion is typically epiphyseal and appears benign. It is successfully treated with curettage and bone graft if it is symptomatic or progressively increasing in size. It is important to avoid extensive surgical procedures. Recurrence is unlikely.

Angina bullosa haemorrhagica (ABH) is a relatively recently recognized bullous disorder in which recurrent oral blood blisters appear in the absence of any identified systemic disorder. This study has examined the clinical, histologic, immunologic, and hemostatic features of 30 British patients and demonstrates that ABH is predominantly a localized disorder of middle-aged or elderly patients of either sex that is evident mainly as blood blisters on the soft palate. Trauma appears to be the most common identifiable precipitating factor, but the essential tissue defect is as yet unidentified.

A case of tuberculoid leprosy is reported in a middle aged female, who presented with generalised erythematous maculopapular rash which followed ampicillin therapy. In spite of extensive and severe involvement of the skin all over the body by erythema and rash, the hypopigmented patch of leprosy on the face did not show any erythema or rash and stood out more clearly as an island of pale area in the midst of large area of erythema on the face. The possible mechanism of non development of erythema and rash in the patch is discussed.

There are presented the results of a prospective study aimed at establishing the incidence of impaired carbohydrate tolerance in a nonorganized population of middle-aged males, which in a 6.5-year follow-up accounted for 42.2 and 40.3%, respectively. The incidence of diabetes mellitus increased drastically with age (3.1% and 9.8% in 50-54 and 60-64 year-old men, respectively). Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis is a rare skin condition that may be associated with immunologic defects, failure of the endocrine system, or a neoplasm, especially thymoma. A survey of 46 patients with the slipping-rib syndrome shows that it is a condition which affects mainly middle-aged people. It is equally common in men and women. The main symptom is upper abdominal pain, equally common on either side and occasionally bilateral. The pain is precipitated by movement and certain postures and is faithfully reproduced by pressure at one or more points on the costal margin. The cause of the "slipping rib" is not known. Symptoms are relieved by reassurance and in some cases by injection of local anaesthetic into painful sites.

A case of double pylorus with a chronic ulcer in one of the two channels is described. The patient, a middle-aged man with active rheumatoid arthritis, required partial gastrectomy to allow continued treatment of the arthritis with anti-inflammatory drugs. A 65-year-old woman had been observed for more than four years with bilateral chronic nongranulomatous uveitis and vitreous clouding of unknown cause. Her death was from reticulum cell sarcoma of the brain (microglioma). Both eyes were obtained post mortem. Two cases of polycythaemic chorea are described, both of which were complicated by severe heart disease. The first was a child with patent ductus arteriosus and coarctation of the aorta causing severe cyanosis and secondary polycythaemia. Chorea began intermittently at an early age, becoming continuous by his fifth birthday. The second was a middle-aged male with tight mitral stenosis and a story of paralytic chorea in his teens. Polycythaemia rubra vera was eventually diagnosed two years after mitral valvotomy, some seven years after the onset of chorea.

An ear-nose-throat survey was carried out on 50 children aged 4 to 10 years with cystic fibrosis. 10% were shown to be transiently deaf, associated with eustachian tube dysfunction. There were no confirmed cases of secretory otitis media. 10 children (20%) were found to have nasal polyps or gave a history of polypectomy. Though a high incidence of middle ear problems in children with cystic fibrosis has been reported from the U.S.A., neither deafness nor secretory otitis media was found to be a problem in the group studied.

Tympanometry has been carried out to assess middle ear function in cleft lip and cleft palate children from birth. All these children had normal aeration of the middle ear at birth, and remained normal until complications began to appear at 17 weeks. Closure of the palatal defect is known to reduce middle ear complications and its seems that closure at, or before, 4 months of age significantly reduces these complications.

The effect of aging on the time of spontaneous perceptual alternation in binocular rivalry was examined in 59 subjects.
