Digital technologies for non-invasive stress detection, monitoring, and mitigation in children and adolescents: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Stress in childhood and adolescence can disrupt emotional, cognitive, and physiological development and contribute to long-term health consequences. Conventional assessments, such as cortisol sampling and retrospective questionnaires, are often invasive, burdensome, and poorly suited for repeated pediatric use. Advances in mobile health, wearable devices, and other non-invasive sensing approaches offer new opportunities for real-time stress detection, monitoring, and mitigation in children and adolescents. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review synthesizes evidence on non-invasive technol

Genomic architecture of antimicrobial resistance and mobile genetic elements in Salmonella enterica isolated from necropsied cattle in central Kentucky.

UNLABELLED: Non-typhoidal Salmonella remains a leading global cause of foodborne disease and an important contributor to the global burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within the One Health framework. Cattle serve as an important reservoir, facilitating the dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella through the food chain and the environment. In this study, we analyzed the genomes of 27 Salmonella enterica isolates recovered from necropsied cattle in central Kentucky to characterize their genomic AMR, virulence, and mobile genetic element profiles. Multilocus sequence typing (MLS

Disability Status and Prostate Cancer Screening Among US Men Aged 55 to 69 Years.

IMPORTANCE: People with disabilities experience persistent inequities in preventive care, yet contemporary, nationally representative data on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing disparities are limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between disability status and self-reported PSA testing among US men aged 55 to 69 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used 2023 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a US population-based telephone survey. The analytic sample included 10 508 male respondents aged 55 to 69 years with comple

C1-C2 fixation: Effects on cervical range of motion and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: C1-C2 fusion is a well-established procedure for treating instability at the upper cervical spine. However, its precise impact on cervical range of motion (ROM) and the degree to which thoracolumbar or global compensations can restore functional mobility remain incompletely understood. Moreover, patient-reported outcomes after such surgery are not fully characterized. This study addresses four questions: (1) How does C1-C2 fusion affect cervical ROM compared to healthy controls? (2) Can thoracolumbar and global compensations restore normal mobility? (3) What is the impact on qualit

Person-centred HIV care and prevention for youth in rural South Africa: preliminary implementation findings from Thetha Nami ngithethe nawe stepped-wedge trial of peer-navigator mobilization into mobile sexual health services.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy (ART)-based prevention, population-level impact remains limited because those at high risk of HIV acquisition are not reached by conventional services. We investigated whether youth-centred and tailored HIV prevention, delivered by community-based peer navigators alongside sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, can mobilize demand for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and ART among adolescents and young adults (AYA) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. METHODS: Thetha Nami ngithethe nawe is a cluster-randomized stepped-wedge tr

Sulfonamide resistance gene sul4 is hosted by common wastewater sludge bacteria and found in various newly described contexts and hosts.

UNLABELLED: The introduction of the first broad-spectrum antibiotics, sulfonamide drugs, fundamentally revolutionized medicine in the 1930s. Shortly after, and ever since, sulfonamide resistance genes (sul genes) have been widely detected. Still, the most recent variant of these genes, sul4, was first described only in 2017, and its host range and transmission mechanisms are still largely unknown. Here, we applied PacBio long-read metagenomic sequencing and bacterial methylation signals to investigate the genetic contexts and bacterial carriage of the sul4 gene in wastewater. Furthermore, we e

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Under Deep Sedation Reduces the Incidence of ICU-Acquired Weakness in Critically Ill Patients With COVID-19 With Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented increase in cases of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In such cases, deep sedation using sedatives and muscle relaxants is commonly used to prevent patient self-inflicted lung injury during the early phase. However, such sedation limits the ability to perform early rehabilitation, leading to ICU-acquired muscle weakness (ICU-AW) and a worse prognosis. SUBJECTS: This study aimed to clarify the preventive effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) during deep sedation on ICU-AW and physical function at discharge

A qualitative interview study on successful pregnancies in women with spina bifida.

BACKGROUND: Improvements in antenatal medicine and surgical management for conditions associated with spina bifida such as hydrocephalus have extended the lifespan for individuals with spina bifida (SB) into adulthood. Decisions and education regarding reproductive care and pregnancies for patients with spina bifida are increasingly important. Pregnancy in these patients can be particularly challenging due to physical limitations, previous abdominal surgery for urinary or bowel management and presence of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. To date, little research has examined the unique challenges

Improving Adherence to Web-Based and Mobile Technologies for People With Psychosis: Systematic Review of New Potential Predictors of Adherence.

BACKGROUND: Despite the boom in new technologically based interventions for people with psychosis, recent studies suggest medium to low rates of adherence to these types of interventions. The benefits will be limited if only a minority of service users adhere and engage; if specific predictors of adherence can be identified then technologies can be adapted to increase the service user benefits. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to present a systematic review of rates of adherence, dropout, and approaches to analyzing adherence to newly developed mobile and Web-based interventions for people with psy

Mobile Phone Radiation: Physiological & Pathophysiologcal Considerations.

It is documented that electromagnetic emissions from mobile phones can interfere with brain's signal processing activity due to their oscillatory similitude to the inherent rhythms of the brain, akin to "electromagnetic interference" observed while using mobile phones in aeroplanes. At high power density levels, thermal effects occur, some of which can be attributed to heat induced stress mechanisms. The less understood non-thermal effects occur at low radio frequency/microwave power density levels and are not accompanied by any body temperature rise. The safety standards set by international

Sex-Dependent Integration of Symptoms and Functional Vulnerability in Interstitial Lung Disease: eurILDreg Study.

INTRODUCTION: In interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), patient-centred disease burden is only partly explained by physiological impairment, with considerable variability in symptoms, psychological distress, and functional limitation among patients with similar lung function. We investigated whether sex modifies longitudinal patient-centred outcomes in ILD and whether differences emerge in outcome structure and cross-domain integration. METHODS: In a prospective multicentre eurILDreg cohort, repeated measures of lung function, patient-reported outcome measures (K-BILD, EQ-5D-5L, LCQ), and the Cli

Effect of physiotherapeutic procedures on the bioelectric activity of the masseter muscle and the range of motion of the temporomandibular joints in the female population with chronic pain: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Physical therapy (PT) methods applied in dentistry are increasingly discussed nowadays. Taking into account a rapidly growing number of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and orofacial pain patients, it is reasonable to determine which of the available physiotherapeutic (PT) methods are more effective than others, especially in terms of their possible analgesic and myorelaxant effects. OBJECTIVE: To assess manual and physical factors influencing pain reduction or elimination and increased muscle tension in patients with TMD; yet the influence of the applied forms of PT on the ra

Case report: Successive ipsilateral and contralateral laryngeal nerve palsy as probable manifestation of neuroborreliosis.

Neuroborreliosis is part of advanced stage of Lyme disease and often characterized by damage to the cranial and/or peripheral nerves. Involvement of one or both recurrent nerves is rare. Diagnosis is often difficult and based on a set of clinical manifestations, biological arguments, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. A 70-year-old man was referred to our Voice Clinic with a 3-month history of dysphonia caused by right vocal fold paralysis (VFP) without any cutaneous symptoms of tick bite or erythema migrans in the previous weeks and normal initial radiological examination (neck and thora

Reduction Malarplasty Using Customized Surgical Stent Based on 3D Virtual Surgery, CAD/CAM, and 3D Printing Technology: Case Series.

The zygomatic bone is a structure that protrudes symmetrically on both sides of the midface and plays an important role in the overall aesthetic appearance of the face. Unlike Caucasians, the mesocephalic facial shape is predominant in Asians, and therefore, many people have a relatively laterally developed zygomatic bone. In Asians, when the zygomatic bone is excessively developed, it gives a strong and stubborn image, and aesthetically, many people want to reduce the zygomatic bone because they prefer an oval and slim face.To reduce the excessive zygomatic bone, a reduction malar- plasty thr

A low-cost, wireless near-infrared spectroscopy device detects the presence of lower extremity atherosclerosis as measured by computed tomographic angiography and characterizes walking impairment in peripheral artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) who experience intermittent claudication report a range of symptoms. Patients with symptoms other than classically described intermittent claudication may be at the highest risk for functional decline and mobility loss. Therefore, technologies allowing for characterization of PAD severity are desirable. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows for measurements of muscle heme oxygen saturation (StO2) during exercise. We hypothesized lower extremities affected by PAD would exhibit distinct NIRS profiles as measured by a low-cost, wireless

In situ miRNA delivery from a hydrogel promotes osteogenesis of encapsulated mesenchymal stromal cells.

Hydrogels are attractive candidates for use in tissue-engineering and the encapsulation and subsequent differentiation of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) is a strategy that holds great promise for the repair and regeneration of bone and cartilage. However, MSCs are well-known for their sensitivity to mechanical cues, particularly substrate stiffness, and so the inherent softness of hydrogels is poorly matched to the mechanical cues that drive efficient osteogenesis. One approach to overcome this limitation is to harness mechanotransductive signalling pathways and override the signals cel
