Sexual dimorphism in poplar plants: Resource trade-offs and sex-specific strategic responses during leaf senescence.

Leaf senescence is a critical developmental transition that drives nutrient remobilization, profoundly impacting plant fitness and forest productivity. In dioecious plants, divergent reproductive costs drive sex-specific life-history strategies, yet how these fundamental differences are rewired at the senescence level remains largely unknown. Here, integrating physiological, hormonal, metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses, we reveal a striking sexual dimorphism in the senescence trajectories of the perennial tree Populus deltoides. Males execute a "fast-recycling" strategy characterized by

Infection Dynamics and Coexistence of Two Novel Arctic Phytoplankton Viruses.

Marine algal viruses exhibit a high level of diversity, and closely related viruses targeting the same algal host species can stably coexist. Here we report an example of a single virus-host system concealing hidden complexity. We discovered two double stranded (ds) DNA viruses infecting the Arctic picophytoplankter Micromonas polaris coexisting in culture for over a decade. Genomic sequencing of the lysate originally characterized as MpoV-44T revealed that it comprises two distinct prasinoviruses with ~203-204 kb genomes (MpoV-44T.A and MpoV-44T.B), of which conserved regions only accounted f

Harnessing Cold Plasma for Rice Grain Processing: A Systematic Review on Functional, Structural, and Nutritional Properties.

Rice (Oryza sativa, Oryza glaberrima) is a globally essential staple, providing vital nutrients such as carbohydrates, fiber, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. However, conventional processing methods (e.g., milling, parboiling) often degrade its physicochemical and nutritional properties, causing loss of essential components. This systematic review critically examines the potential of cold plasma (CP), an emerging non-thermal technology, for enhancing rice quality. Following PRISMA guidelines, an extensive literature search was conducted using databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science…

Dietary behaviors, energy intake, and assessment of school lunch consumption in Thai children with autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with distinctive eating behaviors that can affect nutritional status and development. In Thailand, where ASD prevalence is rising, limited research exists on related nutritional challenges. This cross-sectional study assessed the nutritional status, dietary intake behaviors, and school lunch consumption among 47 children with ASD (ages 6 to 13) attending a special education school in Bangkok. Anthropometric assessments were performed using Z scores, dietary intake was evaluated through three-day food records and caregiver questionnaires, and school

Enzyme kinetics shapes the growth response of metabolic networks.

Microbes adjust their metabolism to environmental challenges by changing protein expression levels, metabolite concentrations, and reaction rates. Average expression levels in large proteome sectors change coherently, while individual proteins show divergent shifts even within the same pathway. Here, we establish a metabolic model that integrates local enzyme kinetics and global network architecture to predict the joint growth response of proteins and metabolites. Under nutrient limitation, we predict a remarkably simple pattern of proteome reallocation with growth rate: protein expression lev

Structural Remodeling, Redox Regulation, and Metabolic Responses in Cold Plasma Pretreatment-Assisted Drying of Foods: A Critical Review.

Drying is widely used to stabilize foods, but long processing times and thermal exposure increase energy demand and can impair color, texture, nutrients, and flavor. Cold plasma (CP) pretreatment has attracted interest as a nonthermal strategy for accelerating moisture removal while maintaining product quality. This critical review examines CP pretreatment-assisted drying across food materials by linking structural remodeling with redox regulation and metabolic responses. Current evidence shows that changes in surface wettability, cuticular barriers, cell-wall and membrane integrity, and pore …

Phosphate Acquisition in Protozoan Parasites: Transport Systems, and Extracellular Phosphate-Releasing Enzymatic Activities.

Inorganic phosphate (Pi) is an essential nutrient required for energy metabolism, macromolecule biosynthesis, and signal transduction. Protozoan parasites are exposed to pronounced fluctuations in nutrient availability throughout their life cycles and therefore rely on adaptive strategies to secure phosphate from diverse host and environmental niches. This review summarizes current knowledge on phosphate acquisition mechanisms in protozoan parasites, with emphasis on membrane transport systems and extracellular phosphate-releasing enzymatic activities. Phosphate transport systems energized by

Rhizosphere microbiome assembly and functional enrichment drive salt tolerance in wheat.

Soil salinization is a major constraint on wheat production, as seedling-stage stress strongly constrains early growth and potential yield. However, the mechanisms by which the rhizosphere microbiome mediates varietal differences in salt tolerance remain poorly understood. Here, we compared a salt-tolerant wheat cultivar (Jimai60, JM60) and a salt-sensitive cultivar (Guomai301, GM301) grown in saline-alkali soil. Integrating soil physicochemical, enzymatic analyses and 16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagenomic sequencing, we investigated rhizosphere microbiome assembly, network structure, and func

Epigenetic Modulation of Exercise Adaptation: The Role of Dietary Supplementation in Athletic Performance.

In high-performance sport, even small improvements in adaptation and recovery may influence competitive outcomes, increasing interest in molecular mechanisms that regulate training responses. Epigenetic processes represent a dynamic interface between exercise, nutrition, and long-term athletic adaptation. This narrative review summarizes current data on how dietary supplementation may modulate exercise-induced epigenetic remodeling and influence performance and recovery, focusing on mechanisms such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs, as well as key nutrient groups w

Association between Vitamin K Intake and Depressive Symptoms Considering Frailty in Community-Dwelling Older Japanese: A Cross-Sectional Study from the Tarumizu Study.

Depression is a significant public health issue affecting relationships, work, and overall quality of life. In Japan, the number of patients with mood disorders, including depression, has increased significantly in recent years. Although malnutrition is known to worsen mental health and elevate the risk of depression and anxiety, the role of specific nutrients in preventing and managing depression remains unclear. This study investigated the association between nutrient intake, particularly vitamin K, and depressive symptoms, accounting for frailty in the Japanese population. Among the 607 par…

Maternal BCAA overnutrition programs persistent dysglycemia in lean adult offspring.

Maternal nutrition exerts profound, lasting effects on offspring metabolic health, yet the impact of maternal overconsumption of key nutrients such as branched-chain amino acid (BCAAs) remains poorly understood. Here, we show that intake of a BCAA-enriched isocaloric, protein content-matched diet throughout pregnancy and lactation induces hyperglycemia and altered circulating amino acid profiles in mouse dams, and programs lasting changes in offspring glucose homeostasis. Adult offspring of both sexes on a chow diet exhibited glucose intolerance. Male offspring showed fasting hyperglycemia des…

Bacteriophages in Antarctic subglacial lakes reveal novel biodiversity and biogeochemical potential.

Of the more than 600 subglacial lakes identified in Antarctica thus far, Whillans Subglacial Lake and Mercer Subglacial Lake are the only lakes to have been directly and cleanly sampled. Although hydrologically isolated from direct marine contact for approximately 6.3 ± 1.0 ka, both lakes periodically discharge into the Ross Ice Shelf marine cavity. We present the first direct characterization of bacteriophages in Antarctic subglacial lakes, combining microscopy, metagenomics, and gene-sharing network analyses with bacteriophages found in the Ross Ice shelf marine cavity. The data reveal that

Post-Translational Regulation of CD8+ T Cell Fate and Dysfunction in Tumor Immunity.

CD8+ T cells are central executors of antitumor immunity, yet their activation, effector differentiation, and long-term persistence are governed by diverse post-translational modifications (PTMs). These chemical modifications function as rapid and reversible regulators that link antigenic stimulation, metabolic availability, and inflammatory cues to the transcriptional and chromatin programs that define CD8+ T cell fate. Core PTM classes-including phosphorylation, ubiquitination, acetylation, methylation, and glycosylation-precisely tune signaling thresholds, cytotoxic commitment, and memory f

Cross-feeding enables robust coexistence between four bacterial species.

Resource supply is generally considered a dominant driver of microbial diversity. Here, using a four-species bacterial consortium, we asked whether coexistence can emerge from interactions between species rather than being dictated by the external environment. Across 31 simple nutrient conditions, including 16 single-resource environments, all four species survived and coexisted over eight growth-and-dilution cycles. We then chose 28 additional conditions to further probe the boundaries of coexistence by varying resource concentrations, temporal dynamics, nutrient complexity and relief of auxo

Maternal Overnutrition and Fetal Programming: Long-Term Metabolic, Cognitive, and Epigenetic Consequences.

Maternal nutrition during pregnancy critically influences fetal programming, shaping the offspring's lifelong health and disease susceptibility. Both undernutrition and overnutrition affect fetal metabolism, predisposing offspring to obesity and cardiometabolic disorders in adulthood. This review examines current evidence on how maternal nutrition, particularly overnutrition and its complications, such as gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and obesity, affects offspring health. It also explores the biochemical and epigenetic mechanisms underlying aberrant fetal programming induced by an unfav

Tunnelling Nanotube-Mediated Lysosome Sharing Promotes Osteocyte Survival via Transcellular Autophagy.

Osteocytes, the central regulators of bone remodelling, are essential for maintaining bone homeostasis. Embedded in a nutrient-limited matrix and burdened by cumulative stress over their exceptionally long lifespan, how osteocytes sustain long-term viability remains elusive. Tunnelling nanotubes (TNTs) are newly described intercellular bridges that enable long-range transfer of organelles and have been implicated in stress adaptation. Here, we provide the first definitive identification of TNTs between cultured osteocytes, which exhibit canonical TNT morphology together with osteocyte-specific
