Hyperbaric oxygen for treating wounds: a systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is an effective adjunct treatment for hypoxic wounds. METHODS: We identified studies from technology assessment reports on HBO and a MEDLINE search from mid-1998 to August 2001. We accepted randomized controlled trials (RCTs), cohorts, and case series that reported original data, included at least 5 patients, evaluated the use of HBO for wound care, and reported clinical outcomes. Demographics, wound conditions, HBO regimen, adverse events, and major clinical outcomes were extracted from each study. RESULTS: Fifty-seven studies,

Ultrasound in pediatric musculoskeletal disease: techniques and applications.

The increased ratio of nonossified cartilage to bone in children makes ultrasound (US) a particularly suitable technique for evaluating pediatric musculoskeletal disorders. US allows the examiner to compare quickly and meticulously an affected to unaffected area of interest in different orthogonal planes without a need for sedation. Developmental dysplasia of the hip is the most common indication for pediatric musculoskeletal US. Sonography is also a cost-effective, useful, and complementary imaging tool for evaluating pediatric musculoskeletal trauma, inflammation-infection, and masses.

Radiographic findings in early acquired syphilis: case report and cirtical review.

The radiographic and pathophysiologic features of early acquired syphilis are discussed. Bone changes occur in early acquired syphilis and should not be confused with gummas of late syphilis. The radiographic findings are protean and may exist without a clinical history of a cutaneous lesion. The skull, clavicle, and tibia are the sites most frequently involved.

Involucrum Formation Leading to Healing in Stage 3 Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws.

INTRODUCTION: An involucrum refers to the formation of new bone by the periosteum surrounding a bony sequestrum. Over time, the sequestrum undergoes resorption via creeping substitution, ultimately leading to complete bone healing. This phenomenon is well-documented in the context of long bone osteomyelitis. METHOD: We report a case of an 82-year-old woman who healed spontaneously from stage 3 medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw following dentoalveolar surgery while on denosumab. AIM: The aim of this article is to highlight a rare instance of resolution through the process of involuc…

A Rare Case of Primary Sarcoma Arising Within Free Muscle Transfer.

Soft tissue sarcomas are one of the rarest forms of cancer. We describe a unique case of a 35-year-old patient who sustained an open lower limb fracture requiring an intramedullary nail and free latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle flap reconstruction. He had a complex postoperative course including osteomyelitis, a refracture, and chronic pain. Eleven years following the injury, he presented with pain and localized swelling around the flap. Histological analysis confirmed a rhabdomyosarcoma within the LD muscle and he underwent a transfemoral amputation. He is now in remission and walks on a prosthes…

Nephrotic Syndrome and Recurrent Infection.

Nephrotic syndrome is characterized by the leakage of protein from the blood into the urine along with the triad of proteinuria, albuminuria, and peripheral edema. Loss of protein leads to the loss of immunoglobulin and complements. X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA), or Bruton disease, is a primary immunodeficiency disease caused by a defect in the development of B cells in the bone marrow and a low serum level of immunoglobulins. The present case involves a 12-year-old boy with nephrotic syndrome, osteomyelitis, and recurrent infections. We discovered that he had XLA. This report underscores …
