Self-reported symptoms or activity limitations and job loss during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported the impact of a diagnosed disease or self-perceived poor overall health on job loss. However, evidence is lacking on which self-reported symptoms or activity limitations are related to job loss, especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. AIMS: We investigated whether self-reported symptoms or activity limitations were correlated with the occurrence of job loss within 1 year during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we used questionnaires administered to Japanese workers. A baseline survey condu

Contributions of Genetic Liability and the COVID-19 Pandemic to Rising Psychopathology Among Youth in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health issues were surging during COVID-19 pandemic. Yet it is unclear whether the pandemic amplified pre-existing vulnerabilities for psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Using the longitudinal data from Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study© (n = 7,560, 2~3 waves of assessments before pandemic and 2~3 waves after first nation-wide pandemic lock-down), we evaluated associations of the pandemic, genetic liabilities to psychiatric disorders, and their interactions with 20 different measures of psychopathology. Genomic common factor models aggregated genom

Association of COVID-19 Pandemic with Newly Diagnosed Anorexia Nervosa Among Children and Adolescents in Japan.

Background and Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic globally has negative effects on mental health. Research from Western countries, such as the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe, shows that the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with an increased trend of anorexia nervosa (AN) among children and adolescents. However, the trend after the pandemic in Eastern countries, including Japan, is not well-understood, and it remains unclear whether the pandemic is associated with the trend in these countries. This study aimed to examine the association between the COVID-19 pandemic and the newly diagnosed AN

Navigating Complexities In Randomized Trials: Insights From The EMERGE Trial Amidst Pandemic And Cybersecurity Threat.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus changed the global landscape of clinical trials; changes in staffing, clinical priorities and recruitment challenges led to the delay or termination of many clinical trials. The Early Metformin in Gestational Diabetes (EMERGE) trial was completed despite COVID-19 and institutional computer network attacks (CNAs). METHODS: Here we outline the challenges encountered and the solutions employed to continue the active recruitment of a potentially high risk patient cohort during the Covid-19 pandemic and detail the techniques adapte

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on foreign body ingestion in children and adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign body ingestions (FBI) are a common reason for emergency department (ED) visits in children. We hypothesized that increased time spent at home by children due to COVID-19 restrictions could contribute to a rise in FBI ingestion rate and severity. Our primary objective was to evaluate the number of FBI cases at a Canadian tertiary paediatric hospital in Montreal during the pandemic as compared to the two previous years. METHODS: Children assessed at CHU Sainte-Justine ED for FBI between March 2018-February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and March 2020-February 2021 (pandemic) were in

Changes in Drug-Induced Hospitalisations and Deaths During the First Year of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to determine whether the trend in the rate of drug-induced hospitalisations and deaths changed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia. METHODS: Data comprised crude monthly rates (per 1,000,000 persons) of hospitalisations and deaths directly attributable to illicit drugs, prescription medicines, or medicines available without a prescription, nationally from 2011 to 2021. Observed rates during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021) were compared with their counterfactual forecast in an ARIMA model, overall and disaggregated by sex, age and drug involved.

Seasonal Patterns of Preterm Birth During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Retrospective Cohort Study in Romania.

Background and Objectives: Preterm birth and stillbirth are primary adverse pregnancy outcomes. Research during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed reductions in preterm birth in some countries, while stillbirth rates increased or remained unchanged. These findings suggest the presence of preventable risk factors associated with changes in physical activity and lower exposure to community-acquired infections due to lockdown measures, altered social interaction patterns or reduced access to antenatal care. Assessing seasonal variation may offer insights into whether lifestyle changes during the COVI

Assessment of face mask use in peripartum women during the COVID-19 pandemic: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in significant mortality, particularly in vulnerable groups, including pregnant women. Unavailability of a vaccine in South Africa until February 2021 and slow rollout made it important for the prevention of transmission to rely on non-pharmaceutical interventions such as face mask use. We aimed to assess the rate of face mask use in peripartum women in a secondary hospital in South Africa and to determine knowledge of and reasons for use and non-use of face masks. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional quantitative study

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the well-being of autistic and non-autistic adults in Eastern Germany.

BACKGROUND: Autistic individuals often experience significant difficulties adapting to even slight changes in their routines. The COVID-19 pandemic created an uncertain situation marked by frequent changes in daily life, though some pressures of everyday life were reduced during this time. The few existing studies on mental health in autistic individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic have identified a link between pandemic-related distress and increases in symptoms of anxiety and depression. The present study aimed to compare the impact of pandemic-related restrictions on daily life and psychop
