The recently described human HSP22 belongs to the superfamily of small heat-shock proteins containing a conservative alpha-crystallin domain. Protein aggregation and the formation of highly insoluble amyloid structures is associated with a range of debilitating human conditions, which include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Muscle acylphosphatase (AcP) has already provided significant insights into mutational changes that modulate amyloid formation. Heparin binds to phospholipase A2 myotoxins from Bothrops asper snake venom, inhibiting their toxic activities. This interaction was investigated using purified myotoxin II, a Lys-49 phospholipase A2 of this venom, and a series of heparin variants, fragments, and other glycosaminoglycans. Oxyntomodulin (OXM) is a circulating gut hormone released post prandially from cells of the gastrointestinal mucosa.
