Antipsychotic-Related Stigma and the Impact on Treatment Choices: A Systematic Review and Framework Synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Antipsychotics are a class of medications primarily used to treat individuals with psychotic disorders. They have also been indicated for patients with other psychiatric conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder. Non-adherence is prominent amongst individuals prescribed antipsychotics, with medication-related self-stigma and social stigma identified as major factors. No previous reviews have focused on stigma associated specifically with antipsychotic medication. This systematic literature review aimed to synthesise evidence on the prevalence

The Potential Impact of Recreational Cannabis Legalization on the Prevalence of Cannabis Use Disorder and Psychotic Disorders: A Retrospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: The principal objective of our study was to document the short-term impact of the legalization of recreational cannabis on active cannabis use, cannabis use disorder, and various psychotic disorders. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective observational study of patients who were at least 12 years old and who had visited a psychiatrist in the emergency unit of the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS). We included all the consultations of this type over a 5-month period, immediately following the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada. We then divided our

Impaired functional but preserved structural connectivity in limbic white matter tracts in youth with conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder plus psychopathic traits.

Youths with conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder and psychopathic traits (CD/ODD+PT) are at high risk of adult antisocial behavior and psychopathy. Neuroimaging studies demonstrate functional abnormalities in orbitofrontal cortex and the amygdala in both youths and adults with psychopathic traits. Diffusion tensor imaging in psychopathic adults demonstrates disrupted structural connectivity between these regions (uncinate fasiculus). The current study examined whether functional neural abnormalities present in youths with CD/ODD+PT are associated with similar white matter abnormal

The relationship between avoidant personality disorder and social phobia: a population-based twin study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the sources of comorbidity for social phobia and dimensional representations of avoidant personality disorder by estimating to what extent the two disorders are influenced by common genetic and shared or unique environmental factors versus the extent to which these factors are specific to each disorder. METHOD: Young adult female-female twin pairs (N=1,427) from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health Twin Panel were assessed at personal interview for avoidant personality disorder and social phobia using the Structured Interview for DSM-I

Chronic tics and Tourette syndrome in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Tourette syndrome (TS) and chronic motor/vocal tics (CMVT) are both common disorders in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). However, there have been few studies evaluating the differences between the OCD with TS and OCD with CMVT subgroups. This study was conducted in order to further investigate possible differences between the expression of the OCD phenotype in OCD with TS and that seen in OCD with CMVT. One hundred and fifty-nine outpatients referred to an OCD research program were evaluated using the following instruments: the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV; the Ya

Assessing traumatic event exposure: comparing the Traumatic Life Events Questionnaire to the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis requires first identifying a traumatic event, but very few studies have evaluated methods of potential traumatic event assessment and their impact on PTSD diagnosis. The authors compared a behaviorally specific comprehensive multiple-item traumatic event measure with a single-item measure to determine their impact on traumatic event identification and subsequent PTSD diagnosis. In a within-subject, counterbalanced design, the Traumatic Life Events Questionnaire (TLEQ; E. S. Kubany et al., 2000) was compared with the single-question traumatic even

Sexual risk behaviors and sexually transmitted infection prevalence in an outpatient psychiatry clinic.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 3% of Americans experience severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) and behaviors that place affected individuals at risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common. Few data describe the prevalence of risk behaviors or STI among persons with SPMI. We aim to quantitate STI/human immunodeficiency virus risk and determine the STI prevalence amongst outpatient psychiatric clinic attendees. METHODS: Psychiatric outpatients were approached to participate in an interviewer-administered survey collecting data on their sexual history, psychiatric history, and risk beh

Study of compulsive buying in depressed patients.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive buying is defined by the presence of repetitive impulsive and excessive buying leading to personal and familial distress. Patients with this disorder also suffer from mood disorder in 50% to 100% of the cases studied, and antidepressants help to decrease the frequency and the severity of uncontrolled buying. To define the correlation between compulsive buying and depression, we assessed this behavior among 119 inpatients answering to DSM-III-R criteria for major depressive episode. Additionally, we evaluated for comorbidity in the patients suffering from compulsive buyin

Social anxiety disorder and stuttering: current status and future directions.

UNLABELLED: Anxiety is one of the most widely observed and extensively studied psychological concomitants of stuttering. Research conducted prior to the turn of the century produced evidence of heightened anxiety in people who stutter, yet findings were inconsistent and ambiguous. Failure to detect a clear and systematic relationship between anxiety and stuttering was attributed to methodological flaws, including use of small sample sizes and unidimensional measures of anxiety. More recent research, however, has generated far less equivocal findings when using social anxiety questionnaires and

Smartphone-based application for cognitive behavioral therapy of panic disorder: a feasibility study with volunteers reporting past panic attacks.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder affects up to 5% of people. It is often treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and antidepressants. However, access to CBT remains limited because of psychiatrist and psychologist shortages and long wait times. Digital health solutions have emerged to address this gap. Still, many applications lack personalization and professional oversight. Against this background, this study evaluated the feasibility of a smartphone-based application delivering structured CBT sessions for panic symptoms among Turkish-speaking adults with a history of panic attacks. Mental health sequelae in survivors of cardiogenic shock complicating myocardial infarction. A population-based cohort study.

PURPOSE: Cardiogenic shock secondary to acute myocardial infarction (AMI-CS) is associated with substantial short- and long-term morbidity and mortality. However, there are limited data on mental health sequelae that survivors experience following discharge. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada of critically ill adult (≥ 18 years) survivors of AMI-CS, admitted to hospital between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2019. We compared these patients to AMI survivors without shock. We captured outcome data using linked health administrative databases. T

Progress and challenges in exploring the pathogenesis of depressive disorders via RNA sequencing.

Depressive disorders (DD) are highly heterogeneous psychiatric illnesses. Their complex pathogenesis, coupled with suboptimal response rates to current clinical treatments, poses significant challenges to global mental health. High-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) has emerged as a powerful tool for dissecting the molecular mechanisms of DD at the transcriptomic level. This paper reviews recent advances utilizing bulk RNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq), and single-nucleus RNA-seq (snRNA-seq) to explore the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD), perinatal depression (PND), per

Therapeutic targeting of G protein-coupled receptors in central nervous system disorders: from novel mechanisms to precision pharmacology.

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are major therapeutic targets for central nervous system disorders, with more than 500 approved drugs targeting this receptor family worldwide. This review comprehensively examines the pathophysiological roles and therapeutic potential of GPCRs in major neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and depression. We highlight how dysregulated signaling through specific GPCRs, including dopamine and adenosine A2A receptors in PD, the mGlu5 receptor and muscarinic acetylcholine r
