The Impact of Concomitant Neck of Femur Fractures and Upper Limb Fractures on Length of Stay and Key Performance Indicators: A Single-Centre Study.

Background Hip fractures are one of the most common serious injuries seen today and constitute one of the most serious healthcare problems affecting the elderly worldwide. Due to the elderly population, associated falls and osteoporosis increase the incidence of hip fractures. Patients may remain hospitalized for several weeks, leading to one and a half million hospital bed days used each year. The reported incidence of a concurrent upper limb and a lower limb fracture is between 3% and 5%. It has been shown in the literature that patients who sustain both a hip fracture and an upper limb frac

Age-Related Patterns in Health Literacy and Health Information-Seeking Behavior in a Korean Population: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Health information-seeking behavior (HISB) is a critical component of personal health management. Health literacy (HL) shapes whether and how people seek health information, but its role across age groups remains underexplored. Korea's highly digitalized information environment and rapidly aging population provide an important context for examining age-group differences in HL and HISB. OBJECTIVE: This study examined age-group differences in the association of HL with 2 related stages of HISB-HISB experience and, conditional on engagement, source-based HISB type-and assessed whethe

Health-related needs reported by adolescents living with HIV and receiving antiretroviral therapy in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have specific health needs that can be challenging to deliver. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is home to 84% of the global population of ALHIV, of whom about 59% receive ART. Several studies in SSA have demonstrated health service gaps due to lack of synchronized healthcare for ALHIV receiving ART. We conducted a systematic review of health-related needs among ALHIV on ART in SSA to inform decisions and policies on care. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane library and grey literatu

The mediating effect of health-related hardiness on the degree of physical disability and perceived stress in Chinese female patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare and chronic disease of the central nervous system. The characteristics and main symptoms of recurrent NMOSD lead to an increase in psychological stress and accelerate a decline in the patients' quality of life. The incidence of NMOSD in the Chinese population is much higher than that for other countries and the majority of NMOSD patients are female. In general, there are sex differences in the perception and management of stress, with females experiencing higher levels of perceived stress than males. Thus, we should be concer

Assessing coverage, equity and quality gaps in maternal and neonatal care in sub-saharan Africa: an integrated approach.

BACKGROUND: Gaps in coverage, equity and quality of health services hinder the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 in most countries of sub-Saharan Africa as well as in other high-burden countries, yet few studies attempt to assess all these dimensions as part of the situation analysis. We present the base-line data of a project aimed at simultaneously addressing coverage, equity and quality issues in maternal and neonatal health care in five districts belonging to three African countries. METHODS: Data were collected in cross-sectional studies with three types of tools. C

Guidelines for environmental health management in children's homes in sub-Sahara Africa.

The field of environmental health focuses on the relationships between human health and well being and the influence of the physical, social and societal environments. Our understanding of the environment-health interface has progressed because of two relatively recent insights: First, the recognition that the unprecedented environmental changes of the last half-century are affecting global population health. Secondly, the recognition that children have greater vulnerability to environmental hazards and are inadequately protected by current regulatory standards. Efforts to redress this situati

Health Qigong engagement scale and wellbeing in Chinese older adults.

BACKGROUND: China's population is aging. Psychological wellbeing describes positive psychological functioning, including self-acceptance, purpose in life, personal growth, positive relationships, autonomy, and the ability to manage daily life. Health Qigong is a traditional Chinese mind-body exercise that combines movement, breathing, and mental focus. However, no specific tool is available to assess how regularly, attentively, and independently older adults engage in Health Qigong. This study developed such a tool and examined its associations with resilience, perceived social support, and ps

Addressing health inequities in treating neuropathic pain: a scoping review of cognitive behavioral therapies, mindfulness, and meditation-based interventions.

Chronic pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide and chronic neuropathic pain (NP) disproportionately affects individuals with unmet health care needs, especially those facing health inequities. This scoping review addresses 3 research questions: (1) What are the characteristics and outcomes of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and meditation-based intervention studies designed to manage NP? (2) Do these intervention studies include participants from populations experiencing health inequities? (3) Are the interventions customized to meet the needs of people experiencing

Implementing scalable face-to-face and digital interventions among forcibly displaced persons from Ukraine in Europe: protocol of The U-RISE Project.

Background: The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has led to millions of forcibly displaced persons (FDPs) within Ukraine and other European countries. Due to war-related exposure and displacement adversities, this group is at significant risk of developing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other mental health problems. Systemic barriers, including insufficiently equipped mental health systems and language barriers, prevent FDPs from receiving adequate mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS). Scalable interventions delivered in person by n

Health literacy and its association with mental and spiritual well-being among women experiencing homelessness.

Low health literacy (HL) has been linked to low self-rated health, reduced efficacy of behaviour change, and challenges in preventing, treating, or managing health conditions. People experiencing homelessness are at risk of poor HL; however, few studies have investigated HL in relation to mental and spiritual well-being among people experiencing homelessness in general, or women experiencing homelessness specifically. This cross-sectional study of 46 women experiencing homelessness in Stockholm, Sweden, recruited during the period October 2019-December 2020, aimed to examine how HL was associa

"Learning with each other, about each other": Interdisciplinary learning among genetic counseling students and clinical health psychology residents.

Interprofessional collaborative healthcare is known to improve provider satisfaction and retention, as well as patient safety and quality of care. The specific knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to work in these environments are best taught interprofessionally. Despite having considerable overlap in training, orientation, and populations served, it is rare for trainees from genetic counseling and clinical health psychology to interact and learn together. In 2017, we developed an innovative week-long clinical health psychology rotation for students in the University of Manitoba MSc in Ge

Perspectives on Swedish Regulations for Online Record Access Among Adolescents With Serious Health Issues and Their Parents: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing implementation of patient online record access (ORA), various approaches to access to minors' electronic health records have been adopted globally. In Sweden, the current regulatory framework restricts ORA for minors and their guardians when the minor is aged between 13 and 15 years. Families of adolescents with complex health care needs often desire health information to manage their child's care and involve them in their care. However, the perspectives of adolescents with serious health issues and their parents have not been studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aim
