A Preoperative Scoring System to Predict Carcinoma in Patients with Gallbladder Polyps.

INTRODUCTION: A preoperative scoring system to predict carcinoma in patients with gallbladder polyps (GBPs). METHODS: Preoperative parameters of patients with GBPs who underwent cholecystectomies were used to construct a scoring system to ascertain the risk of malignancy (reference group). The scoring system developed from this approach was applied to the validation group. RESULTS: In the reference group, 11.5% of patients had carcinomas, in whom the median age was 68 years and the polyp size was 16.9 mm. According to the univariate analysis, the significant factors for carcinoma were age ≥6

Association of Muscle Mass with Survival after Radical Prostatectomy in Patients with Prostate Cancer.

PURPOSE: Although muscle mass has been associated with survival in patients with various types of solid tumors, the relationship between muscle mass and survival in patients with prostate cancer remains unclear. We retrospectively investigated the association of muscle mass with survival after radical prostatectomy in patients with prostate cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the records of 2,042 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy of prostate cancer between 1998 and 2013. Muscle mass was evaluated by measuring the psoas muscle index on preoperative computerized tomography ima

Asymptomatic radiographic sinonasal inflammation does not affect pituitary surgery outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a proposed risk factor for meningitis and other intracranial complications following the endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach (TSA). Some have recommended staging TSA following surgery for CRS; however, delaying TSA has important ramifications. The objective of this study is to determine whether asymptomatic sinonasal inflammation (RSNI) on preoperative computed tomography scans, without clinical CRS, is associated with postoperative complications following TSA. METHODS: All consecutive TSA cases performed at a single tertiary care instituti

Does serum albumin explain observed racial disparities in mortality for cancer patients undergoing esophagectomy?

BACKGROUND: African Americans with esophageal cancer have a higher mortality rate than Caucasians. We hypothesized that nutritional status, as reflected by preoperative albumin, might explain these disparities. METHODS: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried for patients undergoing esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between 2005 and 2015. Preoperative albumin was divided into five categories (<3.0, 3.0-3.4, 3.5-3.9, 4.0-4.4, and >4.4). Univariate and multivariable regression statistics were performed to determine an association between preoperative albumin lev

Pre-Procedural Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction Flow in Patients with ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction.

It has been shown that the patency of an infarct-related artery (IRA) before primary percutaneous coronary intervention determines post-procedural success, better preservation of left ventricular function, and lower in-hospital mortality. However, the factors associated with pre-procedural Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) flow have not been fully investigated. The Japanese registry of acute Myocardial INfarction diagnosed by Universal dEfiniTion (J-MINUET) is a prospective multicenter registry conducted at 28 Japanese medical institutions between July 2012 and March 2014. Pre-transplant low level HLA antibody shows a composite poor outcome in long-term outcome of renal transplant recipients.

To determine the significance of low-level DSA (donor specific antibody) in patients transplanted with negative cytotoxicity AHG (antihuman immunoglobulin) crossmatch, data from 279 patients who received a kidney transplant between July 1999 and March 2006 were collected. All kidney recipients received ABO-compatible donors. A poor outcome was defined as any one of the following: death, Cr>2.0 mmol/L, occurrence of a rejection episode. Luminex Screening and Single Antigen assays from Tepnel Life Codes were used to detect human leukocyte antigen antibodies on pre-transplant sera retrospectively

Pre-operative function, motivation and duration of symptoms predict sporting participation after total hip replacement.

There is little in the literature on the level of participation in sports which patients undertake after total hip replacement (THR). Our aims in this study were to determine first, the level of sporting activity, second, the predictive factors for returning to sporting activity, and third, the correlation between participation in sports and satisfaction after THR. We retrospectively identified 815 patients who had undergone THR between 1995 and 2005. All were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire regarding their sporting activity. A total of 571 patients (71%) met the inclusion

Novel temporalis muscle and fat pad morphomic analyses aids preoperative risk evaluation and outcome assessment in nonsyndromic craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: Analytical morphomics is the term we created to describe an innovative, highly automated, anatomically indexed processing of 3D medical imaging data captured during the course of a patients' preoperative CT scan. Our specific aim is to determine the efficacy of craniofacial morphomic indices (CMI) such as temporalis muscle and temporal fat pad morphometric values to predict blood transfusion requirement and hospital stay in a cohort of children with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis (NSC). METHODS: High-throughput, semi-automated image analysis was used to reconstruct the 3-dimensio

Preoperative ⁹⁹mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and concomitant nodular goiter: comparison of SPECT-CT, SPECT, and planar imaging.

BACKGROUND: Investigations using a hybrid single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT-CT) scanning technique have been carried out in limited studies and have shown mixed results. However, the assessment of this technique for the detection of parathyroid adenoma in patients with a nodular goiter was performed in only one study with a small sample size. The aim of this prospective study was to assess the role of 99mTc-sestamibi parathyroid SPECT-CT scans for localization of parathyroid adenomas with a concomitant nodular goiter using 99mTc-methoxyisobutyl isonitrile (M

Decreased pre-surgical CD34+/CD144+ cell number in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting compared to coronary artery disease-free valvular patients.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease has been linked to endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) depletion and functional impairment in atherosclerosis and aortic stenosis. EPCs may play a pivotal role in vascular grafting. However, the EPC depletion in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients has not been compared to coronary artery disease-free valvular replacement patients with aortic stenosis. METHODS: We aimed to assess the basal number of CD34+/KDR+ and CD34+/CD144+ cells in CABG patients, compared to aortic stenosis valvular replacement patients. 100 patients (51 CABG and 49 valvular sur
